In LA after Shaq he did well with Pau n Bynum. There are different examples of how Phil can get it done.

Pau was one of the top few players in the league.

1994 was probably his best coaching job of his career. Kukoc sucked. Kerr was pretty good. They also had an excellent Horace Grant. That was a damn good team.

Still not superstars as some would insist. Pau could play but he wasn't the dominant force that Shaq was. Remember all the "Pau is soft" memes? Let's not hype Pau beyond who he really was.

you saying that out of memory or did you double check his numbers?

I love basketball and always have. Of course I remember what was going on. Are you kidding. It wasn't that long ago. I still remember going to see Dr. J play for the Nets as a kid. He was my favorite player back then. Loved Clyde n Monroe but Dr. J was like Jordan to me back then.

Well if you remember, you would know that Pau according to many was the best player on that team. While Kobe was chucking, he was supremely efficient.

He had a TS of about 60!! His WS48 was about 230!! Higher than kobe's.

He was incredible!! Beyond incredible. 18/11/3.5.

Please tell me what other superstar big men put up numbers like that other than Shaq?

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Well ... you can't just completely change your opinion and then just keep WTFing everyone when they do not agree with your new opinion.

It depends, if the season after the 2015 FA and the draft and there is not a good sign of potential in it succeding then yes he will drop it.

Obviously Pau had some great seasons. They won titles with him. I think you're mistaken if you think you showed me up with this. My point about Pau having issues and being called Soft was also part of his history in LA. HE WAS NOT SHAQ.

I should've know what you were up to. You do this all the time. Pick some smaller point to try and find a way to embarrass someone or win an argument. It's petty and really besides the point of the conversation. The point was that Phil had success with different rosters even when he didn't have 2 superstars which Pau was never considered. Pau was very good but not considered a superstar. Superstars are elite of the elite. Pau was very good for a while there but he did have a period of time where he faced criticism and was called soft.

No reason for you to get all upset and defensive.

What makes someone elite? Is melo elite? Please tell me ... and please don't just say stuff. Look at the numbers and make your argument. The Pau soft comments are your argument? 19/11/3.5 and a TS of freakin 60! I love how people just talk and repeat what other people who just talk say yet they never actually look at the facts.

You can't just spew crap without knowing what you are talking about and try to teach us all basketball.

Here is another quote, remember this? Prolly not but I actually do:

"Why do you think he could sit there with his legs crossed so much??? Have you ever seen a more talented and mentally tough player than Jordan? Jordan was born with that in him. Kobe is almost on that level!!! Have you ever seen a more dominant physical presence than Shaq??? Yes they all needed a quality coach to bring it all together, but it's much easier when you start with a talent level no one else has."

funny how you are now making the exact opposite arguments.

I am ok with people buying into Phil. I am holding out hope for him as well but STOP YELLING AT EVERYBODY WHO DOES NOT AGREE WITH YOU! Just think that they are agreeing with the old you.

I thought that I remember you saying back in the MDA days that Jackson was lucky that he had the best players on the planet. I thought I remember you saying you not wanting to give him credit. When did that change? Now that he is here?

I did say that and he did have unbelievable talent with Jordan n Pippen, Kobe n Shaq! MDA never had that level of talent. Few coaches have. Still he managed the egos long enough to win which wasn't easy and wasn't permanent. His teams eventually succumbed to the egos.

You seem to have changed your tune.

Yeah ten rings is amazing but I still have more respect for Riley cuz he built up different teams and won with them. I mean Jax not only had MJ/Pippen but then Kobe/Shaq how hard is it to lose with that kind of talent? You have to actually mess things up to lose with those guys.

http://www.ultimateknicks.com/forum/topic.asp?t=35063&page=1

Nothing wrong with the point I made. It was true Riley did accomplish a harder task. Now Phil has his opportunity to do what Riley did. What's the issue here?

In that same thread I also wrote this

Phil is a top coach in history but how can anyone ignore that he's had MJ, Kobe, Shaq, Pippen, Gasol etc. His teams were loaded! Now he's been up to the task but what coach wouldn't want to go to war with the players he's had? I'd love to see D'Antoni get a chance with a team like that. There's no need to knock a great coach for winning with great players but when a coach has the best and wins you can't ignore the advantage he has.

I gave Phil his due but in the post you showed I was showing more respect to guys who also built teams. Phil now has his chance. If you spent less time trying to embarrass people maybe you'd be better off. The attempts to have a "gotcha" post makes you come off as petty.

Also, I did not bump these threads, I merely pasted a link in our thread to give context. You are coming across flaky.

You try to come off as a know it all and state things as fact when you really should be sitting back and learning like the rest of us.

Its not cool to go digging up past comments and posting them OUT OF CONTEXT to try and embarrass someone. It's easy to do lame ish like this but just cuz I'm defending a positive viewpoint doesn't make me a know it all. I'm not a flake either. If I was posting bull with no proof the mods would've stopped me a long time ago. I contribute a lot to this forum as do others. I argue my points and back them up when it's necessary.

You act like you've scored some points but you have to resort to lame tactics in order to come off like you were right. This is why we have conflict. I talk about Pau in general and you cherry pick out one specific period in time to try and make your attack on me seem legit. It's this kind of approach that I don't appreciate. I'm not a kid and I'm no fool. I don't suffer from a deficit of intellect either. Just make your points and stop tryin to get personal.

I could care less about being right. That is the difference between us. I want to learn and be wrong and learn from being wrong. I have not bumped any threads proclaiming that I am "right". I am driven by data and facts. With that, I watch the games and see what I can learn / predict. Sometimes I am wrong and sometimes I am right.

And, I have learned a sh1t load about the NBA from this board. There are so many knowledgeable, analytical and logical posters.

You were talking about Pau under Phil with Kobe ... puhlease ... he played as good as you can play.

You are so sensitive and so afraid to be wrong and if someone does not agree with you you constantly go postal and write freak out posts.

You come at us with this grandeur attitude full of empty proclamations. Stop with the predictions that will never happen and discuss the facts as it stands. And, if some of us don't like Monroe or anybody else then so be it. It does not mean you have to freak out.

Will Phil turn it around? Maybe he will ... he has 4 more years to try.

Has Phil done a terrible job so far ... obviously.

You make excuses for him that he would never make for himself.

He would never say that the Tyson trade was not a disaster, he is not an idiot. He must know that he effed that up.

There is a strong possibility that he realized that hiring fisher was not a good move.

Signing Melo I don't put on him. He had no choice.

Nixluva, be practical and a realist. Too much optimism will cloud your judgement.

I'm going to continue to be me! At this point rehashing the Tyson trade is pointless. That approach has been trashed by Phil and aside from Jose the Kids are the only ones remaining. I disagree with taking a pessimistic view of the current circumstances. At this point it's up to Phil and his staff to make the best use of the options the Knicks have from here on. It's never easy for any GM and this situation isn't easy either.

Top draft pick. Cap space and very little baggage left to clear. It's all there for Phil. He just has to make it happen. I see no valid reason to be down on this team's prospects going forward. Not at this point in time. Once we see what Phil actually does from now thru the summer then we can make an appropriate judgement.

I am not being a pessimist. Its realism.

What do you think the odds are that the knicks win under Phil?

Vegas odds for the knicks winning a title under Phil is < 3 percent. Are they just a bunch of pessimists?

I will continue to assume that we will lose based on the odds and history with this team and I will be pleasantly surprised and obviously ecstatic if I am wrong. May be if we pray hard enough, we will be worthy of this miracle. But it will take a miracle.

That will never happen. The Triangle is Phill, nothing else. He just has to expend the system and make it more modern as in what Pop has done with the spurs. Furthermore, after watching Fisher the last 40 games, I don't believe he has what it will take to be a success as a coach to teach the triangle.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

3%? That seems pretty generous. Didn't they have us being well over .500 this year?

Odds can change.

Reinman, I don't see Melo as the alpha dog of the triangle. The chosen one is not here yet.
I cannot tell you if, who, or when, but it has to be this way. Melo is a current generation Allstar talent who can score a ton of points.

Im not predicting either that Melo will reach another level like Jordan or Kobe. I don't think at 30 his trajectory potential is there. I do think he can kick it up a notch.

Phil knows the triangle with the right talent creates a chemistry that greater than the individual player.

He is paid 60 million because its not easy. He is paid to create a culture as he said. I doubt if successful it would end with him.
Tex might be gone but others can teach it.

Why scrap something that is in its infancy? Half a season and some are out of patience? I do think we had some setbacks which Phil either neglected to identify (it happens to all teams), some injury that stacked up pretty bad, and a trade market that was not opportune in our favor.

Phil, if he has his sights on drafting a core might not be OK4, it might be someone else. He might see That player as his alpha. He might see smaller pieces via free agency and with the right core those players envision a greater sum.

Come July 30th Im sure we'll have still many questions we'd like answered.

Perhaps you need to clarify your view a bit further.

Vegas Odds - are projected for this year. Almost everyone would agree that the Knicks currently stink and are trying to tank at this point....for this season....that is being realistic.

Continuing to assume the Knicks will lose as you stated - is being pessimistic if you are applying that thought process beyond this year.....the reason is that you do not know what roster changes will be made, nor is there enough sampling of the moves and vision for the Knicks under Phil.

Continually focusing on what others have done wrong in the past - is being negative. Everyone makes mistakes, what defines us is how we learn from the mistakes in terms of future actions. It's difficult to properly measure Phil's progress 40 games into a season that is in tank mode. You seem to want to give him an F......while a more reasonable rating would be "incomplete".

No success possible without a plan and extended period of hard work.
It takes many years to build contending team in pro sport.
It will take many years for the Knicks.
The team is at rock bottom.
Phil is right man to start the process and we will need a lot of luck to see him bringing us to promised land.
Toll order to do this in 5 years in NBA.
On the other hand we are very lucky so far this season.
Everything works in our favor.
I hope Melo will focus on his health issues and Fish on development instead of winning.
And of course I hope the young players we have will develop slow enough so we will not start winning this season and get the talent we desperately need.
WE need lucky ping-pong balls and the man we get to be healthy.
It is always a hope.
Triangle is irrelevant in this respect. Its just a game.
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Hamlet
Is there any chance that Phil scraps the triangle?
