So now we don't need to get a PG ...
whats next? SG come on down ...
Phil did play at a time when the distinction between a "PG" and a "SG" was less defined. Wonder if this has colored his way of looking at the guard position.
Galloway might indeed be a Jackson type PG... the problem for the Knicks is that Phil's best teams had Kobe and Jordan on them, and they are guys who averaged about 5 APG over their respective careers. Pippen also averaged about 5 APG with the Bulls.
You look at some of the Bulls championship teams and Pippen/Jordan led those teams in assists, sometimes dishing out about 13 APG between them. Their PGs were much more complimentary players, who didn't control the pace of the game.
Which non-PG players on the Knicks have had the kind of assist numbers that Jordan/Pippen had? Easier to be a "PG" if you have two other guys who are the assist men on your team do the job traditionally assigned to the PG.
With this said, I continue to think that Jackson and Fisher, envision Galloway as someone who can fit into the Triangle PG mold, but if you go by the teams Phil had in the past, eventually we would need that superior all around star who would become the "PG" of the team in every way except by name.
Anthony is not that player, unfortunately. James or Wade would be more like what Phil would want.
In a perfect world, If we knew we could get Mark Gasol, for instance, I could see Jackson looking to draft Mudiay, who would serve as our version of Kobe/Jordan. Not sure how ready he is to take on that kind of role, though, and Anthony's, and even Gasol's (will be 30 in a couple of days), respective windows of opportunity to win a title are becoming smaller each year- so we might not be able to wait while Mudiay developed.
A smart shooter and defender like Galloway would be a complimentary fit on a team with a Gasol, Anthony and Mudiay, assuming he shoots the way he has shown in the past and plays D like he has in the DL.
At this point I can see Galloway as a 20 MPG rotational combo guard. Tough to imagine him as a 30 MPG player at this time, much easier to envision him as a change of pace sniper and defender getting about 10-15 MPG.
Only time, and playing time, will tell. Hopefully Galloway gets a legitimate opportunity to show what he can do.
