Because we are running the triangle, I have to say I like Lin. I loved Lin last year and I know he has fallen off but to just bring the ball up, defend and have his IQ out there would probably do a lot for the team. Of course he would have to re-learn how to hit the open shot. But he loved NY and I think he is one of those players that plays much better under the bright lights here.

The problem with the triangle imo is that having a great PG probably doesn't help as much as one would think, since a great pg is not needed - seems like a waste of talent at a position (money wise).
So, I would rather have (talent wise) Jackson, Knight, etc. but I think this system would destroy much of their game and then a lot of their trade value. And we already experienced that with Tyson (for a variety of reasons.)

Hoping that JR Smith would excercise his option to be a FA but probably not.

Acy and Wear team option should be excercised for keep on team.

So for ****s and giggles let say the Cap next year is around $65M. We have around $25M to play around with in FA.

If nothing changes then this is who we expect to return...

C-
PF-
SF-Melo,Early, Wear
SG-JR, THJr
PG-Calderon, Pablo

1st question. Do we match Shumps qualifying offer? I like Shump. I say we do.

This means we have $21M left.

We need PG, C and PF. In that list..i would go after the following...

C - Robin Lopez. He is a good defender and rebounder. His mid range shot is adequate and he fits the mold of a triangle center in that he can pass and takes up space. He is going to cost around $5M.

That has us at $15M in cap space.

PF - Paul Milsap. Another good defender and can rebound. Also a good mid range shot and a good passer. He would cost around $9M.

That has us at $6M.

PG - Not a lot of players left at that price range. Dragic would be nice but he won't come at $6M. Rondo is out of range plus I don't think he is a triangle PG anyways. Reggie Jackson would be perfect but he is an RFA which is hard to get. Brandon Knight is perfect I think hopefully he has not priced himself out of $6M per....but if he keeps it up we might not be able to afford him. Beverley is an RFA. Nate...hahahah... Jeremy Lin..I like him a lot. I think he would be great in the triangle plus he would cost us around $6M if not lower. Barrea...no thank you. Fatton...I just threw up a little in my mouth.
So....I would be happy with Knight or Lin at $6M but most likely it would be Lin.

So my roster would be this before the draft.

C-Robin Lopez
PF-Milsap
SF-Melo,Early, Wear
SG-JR, THJr
PG-Lin, Calderon, Pablo

Then get best available player in the draft.

Cool Cool Cool

I would never spend 20mm on those guys. Lopez alone will cost north of 10mm per on top of it. Dolan will never allow Lin coming back here. Im setting the bar high lets try to get rid of Calderon and JR and go for Lebron and Aldridge and work down from there. At some point I would only give 1 yr contracts or trade cap space for assets.

I know everybody loves Lin, but if we want to move the team in the right direction, we need to look for a PG that can defend and not turnover the basketball. If they can knock down a 3 with any regularity then that would be a major plus as well. Just give me somebody who isn't a complete defensive liability and can actually dribble the basketball without turning it over and I'd be pleased at this point.

Aside from Knight I don't think there is anybody else in that list we can actually get at PG.

I was thoroughly against bringing in Calderon but why should we get rid of him now, when we have the means to build a winner (i.e. cap space)? I don't think he is a starter but coming off the bench, he is probably the best backup PG in the league. And in a draft, where we might end up drafting Emmanuel Mudiay, we could use Calderon's leadership skills and IQ to mentor him. I'm leaning towards keeping Calderon now that the dust has settled. But if we think there is a worthwhile opportunity to sign someone else, I'd trade him to the Rockets for Jason Terry's expirer and some 2nd rounders.

If its a cheap stand-in center we need (assuming we draft a big), I'd go for Kostas Kufos for $6-$7 million per. He's a pretty stable player and is good enough to be a starter in this league. He reminds me of a better Omer Asik, without the physicality.

I think he is my must get on that list. If that is the case then no Milsap for PF. I would try to get Brandon Bass or Thomas Robinson.

And I think that we need to focus more on fits as opposed to who is available. Talent alone doesn't win games and sometimes you can get more bang-for-your-buck by signing a Timofey Mozgov/Kostas Kufos than Al Jefferson. What kind of identity does this team need to develop that best compliments Melo's game AND produces a winner? Once we identify that, we should start looking for players that can fulfill this end.

PG has not been a prominent position in the triangle because there hasn't been many talents that could maximize what is expected of the position. But if we signed a guy that can tenaciously defend the position, efficiently hit jump shots, takes care of the ball and is excellent at moving without the ball, I don't see why they couldn't be a star if the talent is there. Chauncey Billups would've been what he was in the triangle. Steph Curry would also still be a star. Hopefully we can sign a Brandon Knight or Reggie Jackson because they fulfill most of the criteria for being a triangle PG.

Fair point. I think Jackson is attainable. However, as a restricted, we will likely have to over pay. I think Cole would be a preferred addition over Lin. Also restricted, but Heat probably wouldn't match a reasonable offer. He is a good defended and spot up shooter, which is all we really need him to do if we are running the triangle.

Norris COle? They guy couldn't shoot with James and is struggling more without him. He is Rsymond Felton lite.

For the record, I'd pass on Paul Millsap. I think he's going to command better than $13 million per and it seems like he is a step slower to me this year. Beyond just his skill-set, one of the key advantages to his game was the ability to defend either forward position; a necessity for us since Melo is a defensive sieve. With him becoming more and more of a straight 4, I'm inclined to pass especially with the hefty price tag he'll come with.

Our better move is to either wait or trade for Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler when they become available. I think that there is a good chance that the two of them combined, will cost as much as Millsap but would produce more overall. Millsap is no doubt the better player but I think that a combo of Gallo and Chandler would be better bang-for-our-buck.

He can defend the position at least. Not gonna command much money. Felton is a horrible defender. Poor comparison.

I wonder what Pat Beverley will command in FA and what type of offer sheet would it take to get him away from Houston.

He's a backup at best. I can't see him getting better than Thabo money (aka $12 million/3yr).

I wonder what Draymond Green is going to get on the open market? I'm not sure if he's the real deal but he has been impressive with David Lee and company out. I'm not too fond of his game but he might be a fit for us, after all. He does some of what Paul Millsap does but is younger and hopefully will be cheaper.

The Knicks or anyone else could get Lee back--but it won't happen until after the season and then GSW will want the lottery pick for him.

How do you figure? Anthony Davis will be a RFA and New Orleans will certainly match any offer. And there's no reason for Durant or Lebron to sign here especially when we don't add any real talent to this team next Summer.
