Instead of trading for Monroe, I'd be much more interested in seeing what it would take for us to get their pick for this year. I'd even be willing to give them Amare and take back Josh Smith to make it happen. Most people's gut reaction is that "no way this could happen. We're ripping the Pistons off!". You'd be right. But the same people running the Pistons (Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith) are the same people that thought trading Marcin Gortat and Vince Carter for Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu was a good idea. They'd also be the same people that thought paying Gilbert Arenas $23 million per year for 2 years was a solid move. Let's also not forget the brilliant decision to lock a washed up Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson for 3 years each. So where there are idiots, there is a potential fleecing!

If Phil does that deal, he will need to be shot

So you'd pass on a top 3 pick because of an icky $14 million/yr contract?

Doesn't Monroe want to leave to get away from Smith?

They could keep Monroe. I want the pick to potentially walk away with Emmanuel Mudiay AND Karl Towns/Jahlil Okafor. Dealing with Josh Smith would be worth that.

Seriously dude?????? He passes the ball for a big, rebounds as well as any bigs, scores the ball, and block shots. The last time we had a 6'11" big with those skills from Georgetown, we were a relevant squad

how about blocks, turnovers and shooting percentages? PAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS

you want to max this guy???

Not max him out, 5 years $11 million per

Another neglected piece of this conversation when talking salaries is that after 2016 the cap should go WAY up! So what the Knicks pay a player will be far less relevant. In addition, I do think they will push for some sort of tax adjust cap system it is kind of a joke that the big market teams aren't really relevant under the current model in FA. Financially it doesn't make sense for the players unless they are resigning.

do you believe the owners, who have raked the NBAPA over the coals the past 2 cba's, are going to allow for a massive cap increase??
they will lock'em out waaay before that i suspect.

if it goes up, it will be in small increments over a set amount of years -- my guess based on the owner/pa dynamic to date

That's a good point. Although the player's association appeared to star moving towards aggressively seeking an increase this off-season by telling players to stop taking less. I don't know what it will be but a change none the less would certainly make 10 mil more manageable. I wouldn't be surprised even if the increase was modest to go to some type of tax adjust system. Not sure the league really wants teams like LA, NY, Chicago, etc non-competitive in the FA market.

If we don't trade for Monroe, we will continue to be a horrendous front court for at least the nest three years. For those of you who are hoping for an early pick, please note that our chance at obtaining a top pick is very slim. The bigs in the draft may end up gone way before we get to pick.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

He's an unrestricted free agent. Why trade for him, when we can just sign him outright? There is no way he stays in DET and no way someone pays max to get him, so why not wait?

Because we can use the remainder of the year to see if he will fit. Right now, all we know about him is what he is doing in Detroit. It he doesn't fit, at least we can let him walk without committing a lot of money to him

Who will he be fitting with? A majority of our current roster will not be here next season. Plus, he's an upgrade over everything we've got and will help us win games which is the last thing we should be doing right now.

It doesn't matter who we have on the roster, we will be a losing franchise this year due to the ineptitude of our first year coach.

You trade for him and get his bird rights and pre negotiate a contract first.
What do you think Detroit will want in return? Expiring Amare?

What purpose does that achieve for Them?

There might be parameters that dictate he resigns with them, or can do a sign and trade and get back value.
Why would they just dump him?

why would you spend assets other than amare and Bargs to "see if he fits"? Thats kind of an expensive deal!
Because in your eyes its "at least they would be doing something other than not and that makes 1969 all mad"????

Do explain in detail a trade that benefits Detroit?
