^that lineup certainly has to go down as the worst defense in history.

I would not be opposed to starting jason over Dalembert. Acy at the 4

Chose your poison- Anthony chasing around 3s (Josh Smith is an exception), burning up energy and his legs, but being able to use his strength to bully certain small forwards, or Anthony banging in the post on D, taking a physical beating, but being able to use his quickness against many 4s, although he would lose his ability to take them down low in many instances.

With a legitimate center and PF, we can have a somewhat effective defense- did a decent job blocking shots, yesterday. Cole or Sam don't have much of a midrange game, especially Cole, but they are better defenders than Smith, who did show some toughness yesterday on D. I think Smith at the 4 and Sam/Aldrich at the 5 is where Fisher is heading for the season. Aldrich and Sam actually do a decent job moving the ball around, unfortunately the midrange game that the old Bulls centers showed (Phil always had them take a few jumpers early in the games, if I remember correctly- in order to keep teams honest) is almost completely absent from our 5s, unless Smith is there.

I was more upset about the rebounding yesterday- guys being overpowered and not boxing out. We looked small on the boards- having Anthony at PF will not help the length on the team. You would need a KD type or even a pre-injury Gallo at SF to pair with Anthony if you wanted Anthony at the 4- at least you would have some legitimate length on the floor.

Calderon will help out a lot on the offensive end when he is back. Larkin is just too timid at this point. If we get consistent play from JR, THJ, and Shumpert, we should be OK at SG. Hopefully Hardaway can get back to the way he was last year- he just has to realize that this is an offense that rewards off the ball movement- something that Shumpert has recognized, given the energy he is playing with on the offensive end.

You have to play with the talent you have- no way around that. The problems this year will be addressed in the future, no doubt- for now you have to compete with the guys you have and do the best you can.

EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?

I wish Melo was worth $124mil and played like it every night so we wouldn't be having this discussion. Discussion of where to hide and maximize his limited talents.

it does not look like Melo can take SF's off the dribble. He needs to bully them down low and go ISO to beat them.

That is not the intention of this offense which may be causing his struggles.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

We need to score more. When we won 54 Melo was the 4 this keeps him closer to the basket at times and more into the game/

This isn't going to help. We won 54 games because of JKidd.

And we had good shooting from Shump. It doesn't matter where we play Memo if we don't have a legitimate shooting threat at the other forward slot to keep defenders from cheating. Melo usually sees the other teams best defender at forward regardless of what position he plays.

Based on an offense invented by MDA. Both are not there anymore, heck we even traded good spacers (ie: Novak) for turds like Barg.
MDA's offense with MElo at the 4 has been proven to be unguardable and would have made him an MVP.
But hey, let's implement the most complexe offense with low bball IQ players, an offense that has failed over and over again till MJ and Kobe made it work.
This will be a fun ride.

Trying to show how CA could play both the SF/PF, along with players I think we should target and continue to assemble a roster with
For example

TEAM A
============

Tony Wroten/Randy Foye
Gereld Green/Tenacious
CA *could move CA to the PF if we have the right fit if players*
Thad Young or Rudy Gay/Millsap or Greg Monroe *but we would be pretty slow in a NBA that revolves around speed/quickness, likely would have to have 2 athletic PG/SG's with great speed/quickness*
Marc Gasol or Greg Monroe

Bench
Randy Foye
Tenacious
Danny Green
KJ McDaniels
Cole Aldrich *resigned as we hold his early bird rights, his cap hold is a vet min but we could give him a 5m increase, and then have the full 5m MLE (will be 6m, in which we divide on 2 talents)

Dakari Johnson
Jason Smith *vet min, 2 year with 2nd year player option, so we get early bird rights after one more year of a vet min*
Andre Miller *has the ability to initiate the offense with post up for a PG* or a BIG DEFENSIVE PG like Darrius Morris/DeAndre Kane/Sean Kilpatrick

2 roster spots

Langston Galloway (would love to keep Iman *esp to team up with Tenacious* but don't see us keeping him unless he gives us a discount)

Trade JR Smith, Tim Hardaway JR, Iman, Early, Larkin, Acey, and any other players needed if they have value like Jason Smith
Trading Calderon and fill ins or AB and fill ins for a team looking to dump talented players like David Lee/Josh Smith
GS has Draymond Green's contract coming up and David Lee is expendable, they could look to save some money and we have expiring contracts to offer
Kerr is big fan of Tim Hardaway JR and his abilities to shoot, so that just might be enough as an asset
If we do not make a deal with GS before the trade deadline, we would need them to take Calderon *unless Shaun Livinston suffers another devesating injury, it makes it unlikely, though something like Calderon/Iman *sign and trade* could be enough

With Pistons, they will likely try to dump Brandon Jennings and/or Josh Smith to keep Drummond/Monroe
We can offer expirings like AB before the trade deadline or give them back Calderon *who they actually thought was very good solid PG during his short stinct with Detroit*
Maybe Calderon/Iman and fill ins, if it is done during NEXT season or in the summer
However, Monroe is UFA, he could choose to take less money and still goto NYK

Dump STAT and get back a large trade exemption to PHilly for Wroten with the trade exemption acquired in the Dallas trade, in which we will have a year to use
Possible asset's could include a 2020 1st rounder and players listed above

same team, alternate lineups
========================================

Randy Foye/Wroten (having Wroten push the tempo as a change of pace backup PG/6th man type role or a shooter with Foye)

Tenacious
KJ McDaniels

CA
Marc Gasol or Monroe *both PF/C can SHOOT, so it opens up the court for whoever to penetrate*

bench

Wroten/Foye/Andre Miller/Langston Galloway
Danny Green/Gereld Green
Gereld Green/Thad Young
Thad Young or Rudy Gay or Millsap or Monroe / Josh Smith/David Lee
Dakari Johnson/ Josh Smith/Monroe or David Lee/Cole Aldrich

Darkari Johnson
Cole Alrich

-both Tenacious and KJ are extremely athletic and provides shot blocking/rebounding/1v1 defensive players and are quick/mobile for team defense

We have little shot blockers with a PF/C, so it is important to have some rim protectors, while ALL PLAYERS, can initiate the fast break with rebounds/as 2 players leak out for fast break pts like Lebron/Wade have mastered when they were younger in Miami

Melo is only motivated when his shot is falling. He may work better at the 4, but that is not going to be enough if his mindset remains unstable

Briggs, tanking this season might not be too bad an option. I think we have the talent and coaching to win but what would be the point? I know that you have some interest in this year's draft, so why shouldn't we try to position ourselves for the best possible pick?

I do agree with you overall though that Melo needs to be moved to the 4. Obviously, that pigeonholes the type of talent we can pursue and creates some concerns on the other end of the floor but your damned if you do, damned if you don't. I still think our best move would be to trade for Gallo and Chandler, who are both capable of playing the forward spots, are pretty length and are excellent floor spacers. If the Nuggets are willing to give me Mozgov, I'd also be willing to take back McGee's contract as well. That team won't be winning a title anytime soon but would probably be the best we can do when it comes to surrounding Melo with talent that accommodates his needs. Between those guys and a high draft pick, I think we could seriously make things competitive in the East.

missed most of the game tonight. Saw that Melo had only 2 assists.

Were there a lot of hockey assists that I am missing?

Calderon is no stranger to missing better than 20% of a season. There is no guarantee that he comes back this season anytime soon. More importantly, he's a role player. He'll add a few wins but let's not pretend that he's the caliber of player whose team's fortunes rise and fall with his health.
