He was Phil's first choice

So is this an indictment on Steve or Phil

Kerr was an exec, what Phil is now

I think Kerr was speaking more to the process of building and winning

It doesn't come with a snap of a finger

There's nothing wrong with Kerr. Perhaps he wasn't able to transition to GM as easily as he might have thought. It's not about a snap of the finger. Phil has been thinking like a GM for years. He knows the components of a winning team and has written about the subject. IMO Phil was more than ready to take on this job. He's been making smart moves so far and actually surprised most with what he was able to do with so little. Of course he hasn't been able to make the coup de grace. It's still early in the process, but there's more to the process than bringing in big FA's. Phil has to start the process with the talent he has now and getting the most out of that talent and setting up the culture this team will carry for years going forward. We haven't had that kind of direction and focus in a while.

J.R. Smith last year

However, even if Smith is deemed ready for the season opener, he will have to sit out the first five games while serving the drug suspension. Smith said his goal is to be ready for the opener.

“I have so many questions to ask them, but I’m afraid of the answer,’’ Smith said of his timetable. “I might be too far along. So I don’t really ask him too much.”

Smith’s playoff bust somewhat tainted his Sixth Man Award, but the Knicks were anxious to re-sign him with the early-Bird rights exception.

Smith said he still is nowhere near his prime.

I have so much room for improvement,’’ Smith said. “I just want to be the best player I can be. I’m not at the elite level yet. No, not even close [to my prime].”

Smith says fans will see changes in him this season.

Different attitude, a different approach,” he said. “I’m going to be more focused in on the game than myself and try to get the crowd hyped up. I’m going to be more locked into what [Coach] is telling us.’’

Smith said he believes the Knicks will be more consistent than they were last season, when they won 54 games. They no longer are the oldest team in league history.

“For one, we’re younger,’’ Smith said. “We’ve got a lot of youth. So we plan on extending our adrenaline throughout the whole year.’’

The playoff exit versus Indiana still stings.

“They were just more aggressive than us,’’ Smith recalled. “They beat us up on the boards. Our spacing at the end of the season was terrible. We got out of character a little bit. We have to remain in character throughout the whole season.”

J.R. forgot to walk the talk.

This year the sensations are different I suppose

Read articles from other teams at this time it reveals similar fluffery.

They probably have in shape and culture change type dudes selling company line MO

It's not just the words tho. It's not about just the other players on other teams also saying they're in shape and expect big years etc. This is about the VERY REAL presence of Phil and his staff who know how to teach players and get them to perform at their best. They have an actual track record of doing this. Woody and his Staff were not on the same level in this regard.

This will be the 1st time that JR is playing in this kind of system and being taught to play the game in this way. I'm pretty sure that he's not going to be perfect but I do think that this is an opportunity where the environment is more professional around him. The structure of a Phil Jackson led team is different than what we had before. Maybe that will have a positive impact on JR and all of our players. It seems to me that you and others are discounting the impact of Phil's way of doing things.

They aren't the only coaches/execs who have winning influence throught this league.

The spurs sent several of their people across the league

As well as many competent and bright minds associated with this league

I believe Smith will turn some new leaves

So will players from other teams

No one said we have the only winning coaching staff. You have to admit that few have as many RINGS as our front office and coaches. How many teams added Phil Jackson, Fish, Rambis and Cleamons as a cohesive unit who have worked together to win Titles before? There is a profound difference here in NY. Our coaching change is more comprehensive. It's a plus for this team and worth acknowledging.

You keep trying to make this about what other teams will have that matches what we have and that's not really the point. From your posts you comes across like a "Self Hating Knick Fan". You don't sound proud of your team or willing to look at the areas that could be a positive for this team. You sound like someone who dislikes his team very much. There is always something positive that can be explored. This is a Knicks forum after all. Sober and pessimistic takes on this team are best left to sites that aren't focused on being a Knick Fan. This is the place where it's OK to take a more Pro Knick look at what this team can possibly be this year. If you want to Poo Poo every positive Knick aspect of the team why not go to a Non Knick Fan site where it's expected that there won't be a slant to the posting? It was a rough year last year. It happens. Doesn't mean that all is doomed forever. This could be a turn around year for this franchise and there are valid reasons to be optimistic.

Having titles doesn't mean squat although it could prove to be a huge benefit

How many titles did Popovich have before he took over the Spurs

What about the assistants he brought in

How many rings did Doc Rivers have before coming to Boston

How many teams had Mark Cuban led to championships before he took over ownership in Dallas

Lakers hired Byron Scott, he won rings with Lakers does that means he's better than D'Antoni

Woodson's coaching experience has been wrapped around pinnacle successs

How did that work out for us

We hired Donnie Walsh an accomplished exec with winning pedigree

How did that work out for us

Rambis came from Minny the past couple seasons

How come they never made the playoffs while he was there

You ignore what I like about this team and focus on what I don't

Meanwhile I haven't heard 1 thing you dislike about this team

Did you have high appreciation for this team last year

Before any game was played, they finished 37-45

Which means there must have been something to dislike before the season started

I do not poo-poo every positive aspect of the team, don't post lies

This "because I'm so psoitive and because I said so" schtik of yours

Is nothing but dust on a pair of cheating scales

Now you're just being difficult for the sake of arguing. You can' really be saying that having Phil and some of his staff is meaningless. Surely it's desirable to have a coaching staff that has been to the top many times. They've been thru the process over and over again and that will have some degree of impact on this team going forward. You can't have it both ways. It can't be important to have winning players but not important to have winning coaches.

As for not liking things with the team, I think it's obvious that i'd much prefer we had a dominant defensive team or at the least more really good defenders. I'd prefer younger more physically gifted PG's than Prigs and Jose. I'd love t have a shot blocking/rebounding beast at C. There's a number of things I could wish for. That's not what this is about. This is about what can this team realistically accomplish? What can we expect to change with this new coaching? What will the new players added contribute? What future moves can Phil make to improve the team? You're so negative about this team that you can't even see the positive changes that have already taken place on this team. I'm not the one with the problem.

I never said having Phil was a negative

I'm telling you having him doesn't equal instant positive

I provided several results proving this

Phil needs to change a lot of the groceries in the cupboards

As of now we're not a 50 win team, namely because the groceries are inferior

Phil job has only just begun

Kerr said it's going to take us some time to get this right

Therefore we're not coming out the gate as you're advertising with 50 wins

I can only imagine what the projections would be had we convinced Lebron to sign here

What 82-0, some aren't leaving room for true impaction improvement

Calderon is a 10-15 game improvement then what is Bron

What would a Triangle Darling Steph Curry be

I'm not rallying behind premature commentary from a knucklehead such as J.R.

His resume speaks for itself but you can

Phil has changed 7/15 players in his first offseason. He has changed the entire coaching staff including Herb. He is changing a lot of groceries in the cupboard. Two of the new guys will be starters and everyone brought in has a chance to be in the rotation.

It took years for Phil Jackson himself to apply, teach, mentor, develop the young, talented, and domincant HOF ALL STARS in both Shaq and Kobe, along with MJ and Pippen
Though both era's, actually had DOMINANT players at the 50% FG, high FT%, LOCKDOWN POTENTIAL in Pippen/Jordan, and then continued with Pau Gasol/Lamor Odom's versatility, along with collecting the role players in each erea

We simply are not there yet, as good as CA is at scoring, he isn't a DOMINANT offensive force, he is a very good scorer, just not DOMINANT
Also, habits are hard to break, relying on players at their 30's to make changes to their games both on and off the court is very hard to do
We currently have yet to assemble to roster that Phil Jackson would need to apply his zen teaching to, as it also will be Fisher's first year as coach

Which Triangle system are we trying to implement?
Are we going to be running a Pippen/Jordan type of Triangle? + Rodman/Kukoc/Ron Harper/Brian Williams and lots of 1-2 year role players
Shaq/Kobe + Horry/Ron Harper/Fisher
Pau/Bynum/Kobe/Odom/Ariza/Fisher + Shannon Brown

Tweaks must be made, however, with Melo's MAX deal already *with the realistic possiblity that he could go downhill in another 2-3 seasons*, in addition to the salary cap, leaving us less than 2/3's to actually utilize for FA's
Right now, I think we are possibly in the worst position in the NBA, NOT horrible enough to get a TOP pick in the NBA, and not good enough to think about contending versus top tier DEF contending teams
So how will the roster improve?
The 2 most dominant players that I think could be attainable are FA's in 2016/17 in Durant/Noah, unless they force a trade to NYK like CA did in Denver, and even if they did, we would likely need to draft a complete STEAL next summer to go along with many other assets to attain that type of talent..
Theoritically, Lebron/Love could be a UFA next summer, however they are unlikely to leave Cleveland, with Lebron especially again, to join NYK's? It is highly unlikely with Kevin Love heading to Cleveland in addition to Irving/Lebron/Love + Waiters/Thompson/Varejo *who could return to a solid big man with that team*, in addition to their future draft picks, MLE to use, and vet min's coming in that are worth much more than their contracts

We don't know, we are using this year as a learning curb for our future for our players, along with our coaching staff
Coming off of Woodson's lack of philosophy, we have lots of work to do, and will be teaching FUNDAMENTALS of basketball
I think that is why our summer roster actually had an easy transition, they are young and still came from a TEAM orientated system in their NBA careers in the the NCAA game
These vet's will have to learn how to be great both ON AND OFF THE BALL, along with taking quality shots, and making plays for each other

For JR Smith to be successful, I think he needs to take a page out of Kyle Korver and Ginobili
Smith's best talent is is ability to get his feet squared and shoot an open shot, if not, make a quick decision by either penetrating, passing out, or feeding the post
We must realize, in the triangle, in general, the penetration lanes will be clogged due to the post for the majority of the times
However, catch and shoot situations along with the mid range game should be open
Kyle Korver uses his ability to open the court as a ROLE player and increased role with the injuries/coaching has been impressive last season
We also must give credit to the TEAM making great PICKS/DOUBLE PICKS both on and off the ball, movement off the ball, along with great spacing/timely cuts/and consistently looking for the OPEN MAN, while not settling for the first open shot

Ginobili mixes his ROLE player/facilitater role very well with his natural ability to score, especially his ability to penetrate/finish, and shoot almost as the last resort at times
It is the complete opposite mindsets that a HIGH IQ player such as Manu, and the team must fully understand/execute TOGETHER

Smith MUST NOT rely on that dribble drible step back jumper that he has been accustomed to utilizing or putting himself in that position when the shot clock wears down
QUICK DECISIONS and making the DEFENSE react rather than being persistent with the dribble

Although it was only for 1 year, JR Smith showed he had the ability to REBOUND, facilitate/penetrate, and defend at high level, along with NOT taking shots to establish his role
Rather using his ability to score/shot to establish himself, he looked to penetrate/finish and with that it opened up his ability to facilitate consistently
FOCUS seems to be one of his biggest issues, along with consistency, poor shot selection, and DEFENSIVE EFFORT
Yes, he does have the talent to do much more, but he must find the right combination to utilize his energy/stamina, along with getting his team mates involved
He also needs to get to the FT line much more and hit a higher FT %, he should be a 80% + FT shooter but lacks FOCUS
If he wants to be a leader, he has to stop the complaining and pout, just get up and play

When he gets the opportunity, talk to REF, let him know he was fouled when it was obvious, rather than EVERY play, therefore losing credibility towards the REFs
This probably goes for ALL the players on the court, not just Smith himself
We need to communicate much better on DEF, along with a combined TEAM effort
This is where I think Thanisis would be very good at once he learns to not give 110% on every play for tick tack fouls if we can combine his effort with a Bledsoe type PG, and another F like Matt Barnes *maybe Early can develop in to* and a Shot Blocker that is mobile/athletic, we could be a much better DEFENSIVE unit
The truth is TEAM DEF starts with good to even great lockdown 1v1 defenders that allows them to cheat at times, when you have more players that can do that, it gives the team "options" to give help from multiple positions, with deception, not allowing the opponents OFF to predict where our help is coming from and allow us to recover back in time
While I do not consider REBOUNDING DEF, but if you are not a good DEFENDER, you better be a good rebounder or very quick/fast to be able to stay in front of your opponent at all times and put a hand in his face for shooters
