trading Early and future Draft picks is something i would do with the quickness. We have a 5 year window with Phil on board.

Memphis is a dumb **** franchise. All of their moves are questionable, from trading Rudy Gay to firing their coach.

If they would do this now since Gasol hasn't resigned...would you slap yo mama?

Seriously if Gasol privately asked for a trade, and Memphis still can enjoy the salary cap relief they were going to get from prince and Gasol plus get cleananthony and future picks.... It's not bad. Amare supposedly thinks he can make the all start game so that's good for Memphis.

You say turn down....And I say....for what?

It's like proposing we trade Shumpert and Bargs for Lebron!

Come on, man. Get serious. They'd need JR too.

Well that's the whole idea....I make a thread you give opinion. If you think the idea needs a tweak...Please give your input. That's how message boards should work

Nah I want to steer away from giving up future assets and our young prospects. He either comes in free agency or we look for a new upcoming Gasol type player. Maybe there is a Euro big just like Gasol that will fit perfectly in the triangle that we could get for cheaper if Marc can't be had in free agency. At one point Marc was a 2nd rd pick who stayed over seas for a year and grew into the player he is today.

We should look more into options like that.

Do you think Melo's going to agree to that? He'll be 31 this season, if we strike out next offseason do you really expect him to just sit back and hope that we'll eventually surround him with talented teammates?

Whats he gonna do void his contract?

Remember Vince Carter in Toronto? Remember Melo himself when he got tired of MDA? He'll pout and sabotage the team until he gets traded.

If Melo wants to win then we need as many good players on the team as possible. Trading away Early and future picks don't help the cause. Signing Gasol in free agency to go along with early and picks do. If we miss out on Gasol then we go after another free agent that we don't have to give up assets to obtain.

There aren't a whole lot of quality free agents after Gasol. Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo, and Goran Dragic are about it. Aldridge doesn't appear to be leaving Portland, I can't imagine Love coming here, and neither of them would mesh well with Melo on the court. And Rondo isn't exactly ideal for the triangle. That leaves Dragic, who's nice, but isn't exactly the difference between us winning a title and not.

Portland is in a pickle because they will have Aldridge, Matthews, and Lopez up. I don't care about Aldridge but the other two would be on my radar.

Players I think should get a look are

Dragic
Reggie Jackson
Afflalo
Matthews
Paul Millsap
Lopez
Vucevic

Reggie Jackson and Vucevic will both be RFA that year so they're most likely out and how good are either them really? I don't see how Millsap really fits next to Melo. Lopez is nothing more than a role player. Same with Matthews. Once you get past Gasol there really aren't any difference makers that make sense playing next to Melo.

Lopez is a player still growing. What kind of player was Gasol at 26? Anyway, give me a center that defends the rim, rebounds, can score okay, and pass well. Working out of the high post will get them a few ast a games if they are smart. For me give me the better rebounder and I will settle for a center who gives me everything Gasol has except with only half the assist.

Vucevic probably has all the tools you look for in a triangle Center with the exception of being a stellar defensive big. He is young and show signs but needs to be a better rim protector. If he could be had I would actually go after him harder if he continues to excel and grow like he has been. The problem with growing is that Orlando will likely do everything to keep him and should because he is only 23.

Millsap works with Melo because he works well in a movement offense. Millsap would go back to his comfort zone as a lower usage/efficient player. His outside shooting creates the space in the offense and he can work well in the high post area.

We just aren't in position to go all in for Gasol through trade. We don't have the assets or the depth. Giving up future draft picks and Early for Gasol we won't have the picks to build a pipeline and will have limited flexibility to improve the team. Memphis wouldn't do it anyway so this is more in principal.

Paul Milsap may become available, as could Arron Affalo though hopefully Hardaway Jr &/or Smith &/or Shump do well enough that we don't have to spend money on the position.

Use the draft to ether get a PG for the future or C. Look overseas for a quality veteran euro big man we can purchase off of a club like Ioannis Bourousis.

the way I look at our sitution is we might be set with Cole Aldrich- outside of Shaq, Phil never needed a superstar at the five. I think we need more wing types with shooting ability & players who have intelligence and can pass the ball well.

When Phil Jackson talks about changing a culture into a consistently winning one, I think valuing draft picks is part of the equation. There is no way a team that gives up picks in every move they make can keep winning constantly. Players get old and in the case of a veteran team, that means havingbthem in probably the worst years of their contracts. The only way to keep refreshing the talent is by keeping your picks and I think this is something we look to do from now on. Remember how it was reported we were close to trade Amar'e or Bargnani but Phil barked away because he had to give up abother asset? Thats the mentality now.

So obe of my problems with this move is that, giving up young assets with the mentality that we have a 5-year window. I think, whether he stays after those years or not, Phil isnt just thinking about winning a championship in that span, but establish a culture that can last even after he is gone. You do that by being responsible, understanding how dangerous it is to live and die in free agency and keeping as many youngsters and picks as possible.

That's our life in a nutshell.....

but how do we get better? Just via the Draft?

We could wait on Marc Gasol and lose out on him.

The 2015 plan isn't my idea. It's Phil that is pushing that our to us. Anyone with common basketball knowledge knows that 2015 is a myth at this point because there is nobody available worth signing. Marc Gasol fits the whole triangle thing. None of the remaining guys do and I'm talking about Rondo and Lamarcus. Every one of these guys are likely to resign with their teams. Love is going to be a cav soon.

so how do we get better?

Memphis plays in a Western conference where those bottom 4 playoff teams are fluid. If they start slow, have an injury, etc. they could be out of the playoffs or borderline and might look to sell early on Gasol. It won't happen now but you have to see what happens closer to the deadline.

By then, the Knicks need to raise the value of some of their young guys.
