Besides the players we drafted, the two under the radar guys I did some research on and am rooting for are Sheehey and Galloway. Both 4 year graduates and high character guys who came from good, disciplined basketball programs.

Galloway was freaky consistent as a 3 pt shooter in college (hit 10 in one game), and it is easy to see that his shot is pure. Pleasantly surprised with his finishes at the basket, yesterday, and Phil likes the fact that he is moving around looking for openings. None of us know what the coaching staff sees during practice, and this will have as much of an impact on what they do with him as his outburst yesterday.

As I mentioned on a post in a SL thread, Galloway might have been better known if St. Joseph had upset UConn in the first round, where they lost in overtime. Galloway was the leading scorer in the game, outscoring Napier.

As great perimeter shooters, it makes sense to compare Ellington and Galloway. Ellington is taller than he is, but Langston has a larger wingspan and their standing reach numbers are similar. Don't know about Ellington's defensive ability. This is also Ellington's 5th team, and he was only drafted in 2009. Have not watched enough of him to know why he has not stuck, although I know he is a great shooter, who is supposedly not a "create his own shot" type of player.

I think Galloway will make the team if they feel his defense is NBA caliber, and he shows more confidence as a ball handler. He might be doing some of these things in practice. I thought his D was good in game 3. He looks quick enough- just has to learn.

Looked up a the DraftExpress report of a person we all know- a pre-season scouting report from 2008:

...Deadly from three and from the stripe. A good passer, but isn’t asked to be a stereotypical point guard in the Triangle offense...

Offense: A great shooter who does a good job running the point and moving the ball in the flow of the triangle offense. Gets most of his touches as a spot up shooter, but is also capable of pushing the break and running the pick and roll. Very efficient. Great catch and shoot player, one of the league’s best. Very impressive shooting stroke. Displays great elevation, range, and arc. Equally consistent shooter off the dribble. Very good from mid-range. Good ball handler, but doesn’t get all the way inside the paint all that often. Not a good finisher at all once there. Tremendous foul shooter. Gets to the line at an average clip. Very smart player. Doesn’t get his teammates open, but will move the ball well. Not turnover prone. Brings a veteran presence to an offense. Very clutch. Great asset due to his efficiency, experience and perimeter shooting ability.

This player is 6'1," and he had a pretty good career, all things considered, even though he never made an All-Star game. His game actually sounds a lot like Galloway's from what I have seen in clips and the SL so far.

The player from the scouting report is, if you haven't guessed, now the head coach of the New York Knicks.

The former Hawk had 17 points in 20 minutes off the bench for the Knicks. Galloway also had a very efficient day from the field shooting 7 of 10 and 1 of 2 from the three point line[/i].

What's not to like?

I know they don't give you free chips for your D in Las Vegas, but are there any signs of stopping ability with that all-important wingspan?

Move your feet. The Triangle is also a concept used on the other end of the floor.

Hey I want Galloway to succeed, but we could pick out a report on Anthony Roberson who shot the lights out in training camp, but ultimately wasn't an NBA guy. IN fact I'd love for Galloway to be a BJ Armstrong type. But Galloway will have to face an uphill battle as a 6'2" shooting guard. He'll have to prove himself as a playmaker- a player who could at least slide over and play competently at PG. Doesn't have to be a true PG but has to have a steady hand, make the right passes and create occasionally.

I bring up Ellington because even at 6'3"-6'4" he hasn't found a niche because he's an undersized SG without PG skills. He can definitely shoot and definitely score and did at the highest college level for a huge program. He has not shown the ability to create.

Lets let this thing play out. But remember we have about 5 SGs and 3 PGs on the roster so its an uphill battle. The position where a "walk-on" might have the most chance to help is PF/C.

Very cruel..

Hey, the guy still has to prove himself, and he is strictly a long shot. I just like to take a rooting interest in guys, and I watched some clips of him and an interview or two, and he seemed like a compelling story.

As I said, none of us have access to the practices Fisher has put these guys through, but I think playing time is based on what they see in practice as well as the SL games. Based on what I have seen on the court, the SL team has bought in on the concepts they were taught, and I think Phil/Fisher, if there are any openings at the end of he bench, they are going to fill those spots with guys who accept the system and are willing to play hard on D.

I was also kind of rooting for the Syracuse kid- Triche- who did not even play the last game. Not sure he was hurt, or if they just want to see other guys play because they have earned that right in practice.

The other guy I liked as a long shot was Sheehey, another smart, system offense kid, but I have not seen much to think he is anything more than a DLeague project who is not even close to being 15 man roster worthy.

Yeah... Roberson is a good example to bring up here- I think MDA fell in love with him. Must have been a monster shooter in practice.

By the way, I was going to compare Galloway to Armstrong in another post, but Armstrong's assist numbers were much more impressive at the NBA level. Galloway's assist numbers have always been modest in college. Not sure he has the ability to get to the basket and dish, but then again, our offense might not call for that.

Don't know why Ellington has not found a real home based on his shooting ability and pedigree. If you remember, Phil called Ellington a salary balance throw-in.

I think if certain guys really impress Phil and Fisher, they will make some trades to free up space. Training camp will be competitive in some areas.

As a UF fan why did you guys have to use Ant? LOL. I do think there is a vast difference in the two though and that is Galloway's size.

Galloway-2014 Portsmouth 6' 1.5" NA 188 6' 8" 8' 3.5" NA 31.5 NA

Roberson-2005 NBA Pre-Draft Camp 6' 0.75" 6' 2.5" 179 6' 2.75" 7' 11" NA 31.5 37.0

I think that size difference is why Galloway has a chance and why he grabbed more rebounds from the same position as an undersized guard. I think the key would be to basically become Derek Fisher and focus on defense and rebounding. The shooting will of course have to translate too. Another thing is strength. Can Galloway add 10 lbs to his frame. He is listed on the roster at 202 which is great. If he can keep that size and add more strength he could then use his size to defend 2s.

It's not like he is a super star in the making but I would rather take a chance on him than keep a guy like Ellington.

I think Roberson is compared because they are both jump shooters.

To be honest, Galloway's 611.5" is without shoes, so on the floor he is closer to 6'3" than 6'1". I don't see him looking small out there, and the dunk that Hardaway was nice enough to give him was pretty effortless, and you could see he was totally unaware that he was going to get the pass.

Still say that what he is doing in practice is more likely to get him a ticket to training camp.

More importantly though, is that Galloway is named, I assume, after Langston Hughes, the great African American poet of the 20th century. Folks should check out some of his poems- quite powerful.

I only brought up Roberson because of a similar situation in camp a few years ago. Guy shot the lights out but was an SG trapped in a PGs body. He made the team out of camp, but then stunk it up on the roster because his shot wasn't falling and he couldn't slide over and be useful at PG.

Galloway has a bit better size, but the same kind of issues in terms of his long term staying power. He's gotta show some use at the PG position to really be viable to justify a roster spot on him. Doesn't have to be a pure PG, but his ballhandling and decision making have to be really, really solid if he has to play 10-15 minutes at that position.
