if that happens that might be the end for a lot of knick fans right there, or at least the real beginning of even more serius ptsd signs in the die hard fan base.
one friend of mine called me to go crazy about this rumor and claimed hiring fisher as coach rather than bringing mark jackson was infuriating, as they think this is going to/could lead melo to consider leaving more seriously because this tells him we aren't taking winning seriously enough. i disagree, as i am of the believe of what i gather the supporters of the hiring are thinking:
1) the knicks was better than the record showed and is at least a good/playoff team in the east with minimal change
2) no one is beating miami next year in the east probably anyway
3) melo's options seemed to be debatable as that much better due to risks associated with the moves i.e. depending on rose to comeback, (yet the miami superduper friends concept, if the players are genuinly willing, is the biggest threat)
4) the team lacked leadership and with fisher we bring the kind of players, as a coach this time, who helped keep the team together like rasheed and kidd
5) fisher will not be expected to work miracles so expectations are tempered a bit out the gate (as pjax appears to be trying to do)
6) he will be a satellite coach of jackson who may even think it is a good idea to coach this team for a bit, but physically cannot and is not as in touch with the younger players as fisher is
7) obviously it is one year of that and then expecting to sign (a) big free agent(s)
i am leaving some things out, but those seem key to following the logic to persuade melo to stay, and how fisher is not a bad option to help. yes, it could all backfire and we may lose melo anyway. if that happens we have a young coach to rebuild the team and will obviously look to sign at least 2 free agents in 2015, melo here or not.
but holy begeesus the miami idea is scary right now. i am a lebron fan, but that would be really hard to swallow. guess being a bandwagon jumper may be the only hope for a bit, unless the knicks orchestrate their own superfriend team as well.
that's also a lot of money to leave on the table though for melo. $70 mil?
