Here is why. I have free agency in 2015--I can pick my players. I don't feel we'll be a player for chip next year although we can be real good with some proper moves at PG.
Look at our frontline Boozer Amare Tyson(unless there is a deal worthy of doing) Bargs maybe Aldrich--whatever way you want to look at that--that frontline is very good. Upgrade at PG--whether offering Collison the wheels if he takes less Patty Mills on the side --IDK but there are options.
Then we have picks 14-16 and 49 to go along with THJ Shumpert and maybe Toure Murry. In the next year we hand pick 4-5 players from the draft--a couple of minor free agencies and bang we have a core set for major players to come in 2015 with $$$$ controlled cap. This is important--its importnat to manage the cap.
If this is an avenue--this is what I would do.
A buddy and I discussed a Chicago trade that was Melo/Felton/Smith for Boozer/Dunleavy/and non-guaranteeds to make the math work. In addition, Knicks get pick 16, top ten protected 2015 1st that Bulls got from Sacramento and 2 second-rounders.
Basically gets Felton and Smith off the books for no future money and the Knicks get a chance to add 3 lottery players in the next 2 years. Plus, Pablo is the only obligation in 2015 that isn't Shump or Hardaway.
Chicago isn't a realistic Melo destination, though.
