From a strategic point of view, if we take off our orange and blue shades for a moment here is another angle. If a coach (or General Manager) is forever wed to a system, how does that system take precedence over the acquisition of coaches or players?
Are the best coaches the ones who can adapt their coaching philosophies to their roster, or do they simply impose their system on the roster, no matter who wears the uni?
Could Michael Jordan, or Kobe, have been all-world in any system?
If you insert another all star with Carmelo, which one plays defense?
We only know that neither was all world before, or after Phil.
Mike had a few seasons before Phil at was 27 when he won his first ring. Six year in the NBA pre-Phil Jax. Both with Phil in their primes. WE'll never know otherwise.
I say the best coach's impose their system on the players and mold rosters to fit it. MDA when Kerr came in was not in synch with what Colangelo (jr) had build with MDA. Krause got the man he though was right for the team.
Riles, Pop and Auerbach had control and built it to their specs, and when they needed to made adjustments but within the context of the system. Example is Pop gone more uptempo, but still uses his propritary system.
