If we sign Carmelo we need to get a top 10 PG. There is no other way. Melo needs a good PG. Melo goes off the rails when he is the entire offense, takes some shots he shouldn't take or wouldn't take if he had faith that the offense would generate points without him needing to force it up.

If we have no plan to get a top 10 PG we'd be better letting Melo walk.

Its not just the money. He's played remarkably hard this year, compliments to him. HOwever - there are no assets in cap space or pick to 'build around him', and, much more importantly, what evidence is there that he can or will be able to work with others? Amare/MDA/Lin - all were ignored, or rebuffed.
We keep forgetting pre-injury how bad rthe chemistry was with Amare. Melo insisted ball go through him, no accomodation to MDA/Amare....... whose to say he would with any other star (even if they could get them here?)

Both parties would be better off with him elsewhere.

Melo and Amare played well together dude. It wasn't til Tyson Chandler came that Amare didn't fit anymore.

Not really. The team played .500 ball that first year with Amare and Melo together.

is that their fault? There was a pg adjusting to a different style. Billups was used to a slow pace walk it up let me post up and work through me down low style. Offensively Melo and Amar'e usually work well but defensively no one works well with Amar'e. It's impossible. A smart coach would really run a lot of pnr with the two but that works to well for some coaches.

I wasn't assigning blame - that's going to take the thread in a whole different direction. I was just pointing out his statement was wrong.

Top 10...I'd settle for a PG that is a legit NBA starter at this point.

the improvement would be paramount.

My biggest MO for resigning Melo is value. He continues to get better and has huge value.

Sign Melo to a reasonable contract, something in the 20 million dollar range for the 5 years. If he balks and insists on a max deal, let him go. New York has inherent value when it comes to marketing. Please don't speak to me about respect. 20 million a year is a lot of respect. This dollar will allow us to move forward with our rebuild.

agree... I would give him like 5 years $95mm and decline the years. Start at like $24mm, $22mm, $20mm, $18mm, $16mm

I think thats the ideal hedge. Melo gets paid, Knicks get cap friendlier contract that gets more and more tradable the older he gets.

I would do the opposite. Start at $17-$23mil. Allows us to add key pieces now. Which is what you want if you choose to keep melo. He messes up his knee it won't matter if he is making 16 of 23mil. He will have to sit at the end of the bench til his contract comes off like h20, mcdyess and Amare

He is going to demand the max of all max contracts.

I acknowledge how great of a scorer Melo is but at 30, is it really worth it to take up this much cap space? Fishmike, wasn't it you that said that IF we had good management we could build a team around Melo at 30+ years with that contract? We might not be on the same boat but I personally think our management currently sucks and feel that it has been quite overrated since we got Melo. This may be more of an indictment of Dolan than anyone else.

Let him walk, start from scratch and let the detox process occur. We need it. At best, we were able to get to the second round with Melo anyway. Who are we realistically going to bring in that can push us over that that can also lead us past LeBron and past any of the Western teams?

I'm usually down with Briggs's prescriptions for the Knicks but . . . thinking big picture here . . . I'd let Melo go. Yes, he's a good player with a few years left. Yes, having him around next year and the year after might help the Knicks win a few games. However, I just don't see how keeping Melo, for the price he's going to be asking, will help in the long run. I'd rather see a clean sweep and Melo replaced by a cheaper, lesser, player.

I love Kevin Love but not with Melo.

I agree but he probably won't come here without Melo, which makes the whole plan irrelevant.
There's no way I'm using up 3/4 of the cap on those two, which would basically leave room for nothing but league min players or maybe one good vet role player plus league min players

Agreed but then again, I feel players shouldn't be signed to max contracts unless you are guaranteeing yourself a championship. By you, I am actually excluding James Dolan because if he had a bunch of worms teaming up with Melo, he would still guarantee a championship.

Just clear the capspace, keep next years draft pick, try and raise Chandlers and Shumperts value and maybe even Smiths and Feltons. We aren't winning anything anytime soon anyway so you might as well show some patience unless something super worth it falls in your lap.

Melo might be better than love but it is easier to get complementary pieces around Love than Melo who doesn't have a position on either end of the floor

And I would hire Patrick Ewing as my Head Coach - starphuch that way so you still can sell seats.

Guarantee that we would have a team that tries - as opposed to this bunch.

And I would watch them on TV. Its hard with this group, because its clear they should be able to do better.

Dont see it Guns.. has Minn even had a winning season w/ Love? I like him but who is he making better? I thought Tyson pretty much shut him down. Love was low impact last night. Melo won the game. Granted its one game and we have certainly seen MElo's share of shooting nights like Love had last night.

Signing Melo (who I like) to a max would be a monumental disaster.

So, mark it down.

so here is what phil is thinking ....
