Would think that given the roster deficiencies they would at least try to bring in some D League talent (especially at PG) to see what might stick for next year.....instead of bringing in retreads like Brown or stiffs like Clark. Regarding the Nets...they have won the battle this year. But looking at their roster age, contract situation, salary cap and traded picks....they do not look to be set up to run a string of years together as an NBA contender....which they will need to do over a period of years in order to take away any significant part of the NY fanbase.
There's a difference between taking away the fanbase and getting the next generation of NY basketball fans who are too young to have committed to a team. Imagine an uncommitted 10 year old sees the Knicks giving away the #5 pick to Denver while the Nets are in the playoffs and maybe win a round. Think about what will happen.
Try Again.
Generally - 10 year olds are not thinking about if Denver has the #5 pick and who it is from. Most 10 year olds are not hanging out on message boards and quoting stats. They are actually playing hoops, or on their devices and playing Minecraft or Clash of Clans.
Rationally - the Knicks have a current majority of the NY Fan base. Consider that even with a mediocre or low level playoff team....MSG is packed and the TV Ratings are good. Fans in NYC and surrounding areas are hungry for the Knicks to be good and severely disappointed when they are not. Dolan as an owner is certainly frustrating and ratings are down this year because the team sucks. However it will take years of winning by the Nets, perhaps even a title or two ......... and not just one year and one playoff series win to capture the imagination of the next generation of kids. If the Heat retain Lebron long term and continue to win titles....they will capture the next generation of young Fans (even in NYC more than the Nets will).
And don't forget the huge crowds that showed up to watch the Nets during the glorious JKidd era!
Same old line of crap about a third world little boy franchise trying to compete and out do the older brother.
Yankees/Mets, Giants/Jets, Knicks/Nets. Crap, at least the Mets and Jets have a REAL chip or two to look back on.
Bring me some more of this Nets shinola when you've won something. Anything. Until then, STFU. Maybe a move to Queens would be next...
Nets haven't been in the NBA as long as the Knicks but they have ABA championships two of them.
Try again. I'm sure the Jets were tough in the old AFL, too.
The Knicks were relevant for 15 years straight. The Nets run a few years together and then disappear into some other place.
Do they have a championship to show for their 15 years of relevance?
Do the Nets have any championships to show for their entire NBA existence?
Do the Knicks have one in your life time? Can't live in the past look at what is going on in the present. Past championships don't lead to future championships.
Not only one, but two in my lifetime, son.
I even had the Clyde, Bradley and Dick Barnett cards.
And 2 other trips to the Finals. And BK. And the Debusschere draft moment. And Ewing. And Dave D's jersey retirement night (went to that game with my brand new driver's license). And Sprewell. And beating the crap out of RileyHeat for a few years. And now Melo.
I have 4!!
2 with the knicks and 2 with the NEW YORK Nets!!!
From 1970-1976 there were 4.
You don't want to count the Nets ABA thats your choice. I was there when DR. J went up against the best of the ABA whom soon excelled in the NBA. The teams from Kentucky, Indiana and Denver were NBA quality teams.
It was a sort of Mecca then. Back then we did not call it that, we just lived in it.
Then Clyde was traded, Dr J got sold, the Nets exiled themselves to Jersey, and the Knicks exiled them selves into StarphuckVille.
The Mecca became a barren basketball wasteland but we did not know it then. We have just wandered in it for 40 years. We are the choosen.
The Nyets can take a chunk of NYC thats up for grabs because Dolan needed to Cockblock them by getting Melo, their entry to Brooklyn and protect his billion dollar renovation. Nets over spend and cashed in too early. Neither will parade down the canyon of heroes anytime soon.
A rivalry was born but its not worthy yet.
