Judy Smith would have coached Felton to simply lay low, practice, and let a MSG spokesperson face the media.

Felton is entitled to privacy for his personal affairs. In this case, the Knicks hostile media policy did Felton no favors. At least Woodson and Chandler filled the void.

Harvey Araton to the rescue

Off court and on, the Knicks’ collapse has been a total team effort, from the top down. In certain ways, Dolan and Anthony have brought this dysfunction on themselves.

"Mills opened by declaring the team’s goal of a long-term commitment from “one of those superstar players that don’t come around very often.” That day, I predicted “a season of breathtaking pandering to Carmelo Anthony.” With injuries piling on, increasing the pressure, it’s no surprise that everyone besides Anthony has been collaterally damaged."

"One of the great scoring machines in N.B.A. history, Anthony has played undeniably hard and gone on binges that are even harder to believe. But beyond the standard knock on him — he doesn’t make players around him better — is the fair question of whether he actually makes them worse."

"How does anyone develop cohesion and confidence playing with someone who scores as effortlessly as Anthony does and always believes he is the better option, no matter the circumstances?"

"Who can be the one to remind him that he and Dolan are more responsible than any other Knick or combination thereof for the state of the franchise?"

"In the interest of getting Anthony maximum dollars and Dolan a superstar to help justify huge ticket-price increases for his refurbished arena, they cooked up the deal that cost the Knicks too many assets, including the progressively regrettable forfeiture of their 2014 first-round draft pick."

"In the interests of continuing the illusion of Anthony as a rock-solid franchise foundation, it’s much more convenient to blame the fall guys."

"In Felton’s case, his poor performance has contributed much to this season of woe. But let’s also recall he returned to the Knicks last season only because Dolan didn’t want to pay Jeremy Lin and Anthony didn’t want to play with him."

"Off court and on, the Knicks’ collapse has been a total team effort, from the top down. In certain ways, Dolan and Anthony have brought this dysfunction on themselves."

if felton was avg 20 and 10 and the knicks were 1st in EC, the amount of love he would receive would be overwheleming, but becuase he sucks, and the knicks suck, he's guilty, throw him in jail and stone him to death.

Seriously....and on another note, Araton is a Columnist. Columnists write opinion pieces which are no different than the average poster on this board. I have a BS in Journalism and the only difference between me and Harvey is the good ole' boys that hold the keys sports journalism wouldn't let me in despite an internship at CBS and the Daily News. My point being, just because an opinionated columnist writes an opinion piece does not equate to Gospel....

The Answer Man rarely agrees with Mitch Lawrence, but in the case of today's so-called press interview, Raymond Felton blew a layup. He talked about the playoffs, thanked his teammates and talked about playing the Miami Heat. Unrepentant as he is towards his head coach during a timeout, Felton missed the entire reason for the gathering... and the opportunity to demonstrate that he understood the seriousness of a violation of New York gun laws.

In the middle of a media scrum, he said he didn't think his arrest would be a distraction. Most of all...

He can't apologize as that's an admission of guilt- why would he do that when he's pleading not guilty?

You apologize to the fans for causing drama off the basketball court and drawing even more negative attention to the team. He doesn't have to say "I'm sorry for waving my gun at ex-wife".

The argument that Anthony makes his team mates worse is laughable at best. He damn sure doesn't force Felton play half assed defense, or Chanlder ans Amar'e play poorly. Each player must look to themselves for those short comings.

Why are people always wanting people they don't know to apologise? Would you honestly feel any better if Felton apologized to you via a newspaper or camera? How the heck would he word an apology that didn't implicate him as being guilty?

smackddog - exactly. If Felton's appearance before the press does not bring any substance, what is the point of having him in front of the cameras?

Dude coulda just hit the showers early and no one would have cared.

Felton claims the affair is not a distraction. Let's count how many times it is mentioned over the next three days, including two national broadcasts.

The gun story is a distraction.

So you don't think not facing the cameras and saying he has no further comment on his personal issue would not garner more speculation and create more of a distraction??...I beg to differ...

holfresh - as someone who looks forward to your posts, and holds a tremendous amount of respect for your thinking, The Answer Man is enjoying the opportunity to trade jabs with you in this virtual boxing ring.

Felton not facing the cameras would have been considered just another day in the Knicks media manipulation, misdirection and diss-information policy.

The whole world is watching.

holfresh - our guys have three consecutive national telecasts in four nights. TNT (Heat) tonight, ESPN Friday (Golden State) and Sunday (Bulls) on ABC. Has this ever happened in NBA broadcast history?

These three games will put our beloved Knicks on Front Street with every commentator taking three point shots from every spot on the studio floor. Raymond Felton will be mentioned early and often. "What was he thinking?"

So will Melo. "Is he staying or going?"

"...and what about Mike Woodson?"

The best news is that the State of The Knicks will be dissected and the name James Dolan might even be mentioned. If the performances on the court are substandard, how will proud New Yorkers respond to being ridiculed on national television over an entire weekend?

Will anyone in the front office get the message?

Papabear Says

It would be pretty stupid to apologize to have a gun in New York is he didn't bring it here. Maybe his wife brought it here to shoot him. I find it kind of strange for him to bring that type of gun to New York. If he apologize then he will be admitting that he brought the gun to New York.
