Or being athletic alone doesn't get you very far
I don't think his athleticism was ever elite. Maybe in HS but it never turned into, say, Russell Westbrook. Mayo is a small SG
But he can shoot the ball and has pretty good ball handling skills. Getting his shot shouldn't be a problem, especially when you look back on his first two years in Memphis. And he has always been known as a dogged defender. If I'm not mistaken, he was known for locking up Derrick Rose in college. I don't think he was all hype like some seem to be suggesting.
hence why I gave him credit for having polish
I think OJ Mayo is a solid two-guard, but he lacks that extra burst most dominating scorers have. He has a solid first step and a good handle for his position. But his field goal percentage has been average or below average at the rim for most of his career. He doesn't have the explosiveness or guile to finish in the half court consistently. It's tough to be a consistent scorer in the league when you have to rely on tough mid-range and long Js for most of your scoring. Also, I'm a little disappointed that he hasn't improved on his playmaking skills since entering the league. The worst thing that happened to him is when he went on that scoring rampage in his rookie year and people started calling him the next Kobe. He's not that type of scorer.
Always... always remember: Less is less. More is more. More is better and twice as much is good too. Not enough is bad, and too much is never enough except when it's just about right.
