If you asked him to defend Pierre Jackson, Pierre Jackson could go off for over 60pts

Is that right? Just looked for clarification on Larry Coon's site and could find anything saying that. I saw that cash can't be counted in a trade to even up salaries, which I didn't know. For instance, say you have a player making $5mm -- you can't trading him with $3mm cash for a player making $10mm where I believe a $3mm gap is allowed. Also, looks like the limit for outgoing/incoming cash in a trade is up to $3.2mm now.

Link -- check out #96, maybe I misread it: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q90

I think the Knicks can include cash in this deal, up to $3.2mm in fact. Under normal circumstances (a trade of one NBA roster player earning a salary for another), it just can't be solely a cash transaction and cash can't be used to bridge a gap in a trade that's more than $3mm apart... A trade for Pierre Jackson may be different however...P-Jax currently isn't on the Pelicans' roster and is not earning a salary from that team. Maybe we could make this a cash only transaction, like trading cash for a draft pick. The way Jackson's been playing however, it probably takes more than cash. I know I'd be asking for more than that now if I were in charge of that team.

I personally believe smaller assets like Toure Murry, Cole Aldrich, Jeremy Tyler, a future 2nd round pick, etc., along with cash could be enough to get this done. Or, he could be obtained as part of a large deal involving Tyson Chandler possibly...I think P-Jax and the Pels are done with each other. He doesn't want to play there and they don't want a guy around that doesn't want to be there. The question now is can they get enough back to warrant trading this kid. They may have gotten nothing but lowball offers up to this point from other interested teams. I would love to know if the Knicks are one of those teams.

Here's the latest on the situation with Jackson and the Pelicans (I don't think anything's changed since, except for more monster performances by P-Jax in the DL):

http://hoopshype.com/rumors/tag/pierre_jackson

Apparently he and reps want a call-up -- it's the Pelicans that have refused to offer him a contract, even w/o Holiday AND Jackson ripping up the DL on a nightly basis. Strange how they're willing to cut their nose off to spite their face with this whole situation. They must really be chapped at this kid. For what exactly? Opting for France (and then the DL) when he probably wouldn't have made the team anyway (supposedly I read he didn't play well in SL for them and most likely would've been cut)? Bottom line is he didn't go to France (there were homesick and sick grandmother issues); he chose the Idaho Stampede, the Pelicans' own DL affiliate, and has blossomed big-time. You figure after his performance thus far, you bury the hatchet, pass the peace pipe around and iron out a deal. Very strange...If I were a Pelicans fan, I'd be irate with Demps and co. The Knicks need to swoop in and capitalize on this. Situations like this don't come around that often..

I don't think him putting up points means he'll be a good NBA player... but we got a bunch of trash at guard right now and most of them are not legit NBA players. The Knicks should call and offer to give the Pelicans a bunch of cash for his rights

Agreed but it's not only the points. Scoring is only one aspect of his game (I personally never minded a PG that can score the ball btw. The more scorers you have, the the merrier. I like that he has the ability to assume some of the scoring load for a team if need be---that's what these monster scoring games show me: he could be a capable rotation scorer and we could use more reliable scorers. Some feel "we have enough scoring" -- I don't think that's accurate. Melo could use more help. The more help, the better). He actually had an 18 assist game recently and has had big assist games like that in college. The other night when he went for 58 he actually had 8 dimes in that game too! It's everything man -- his overall dynamic game--the speed, the ball-handling, his athleticism, the passing, the potential to put up points in bunches and alleviate scoring pressure off our star (Melo would love playing with this kid--everyone would), the ability to keep others involved while scoring, the overall firepower & excitement he'd bring. This could be a big-time acquisition for us. What if this kid turned out to be big-time and we look back one day and laugh that we got him for a song--say Toure Murry/Cole Aldrich, cash and a 2nd rounder? We need to take the chance here. What have we got to lose? Think of the potential upside vs. the nominal outgoing cost..

I'd consider that "overpaying". Cash and Murry should be sufficient. However, keeping it in perspective, overpaying by trading one second round pick is a pretty good deal for this organization. A guy like this or Jimmer or comparable is worth "overpaying" for, considering the complete lack of talent on the roster and that situation won't improve next year either, with Melo leaving/getting a raise and no pick

Tell ya all what -- Briggs recommended a trade for Tyreke Evans a week or so ago. I know he's had a bad year and he's hurt now (doesn't look like anything too serious -- rib injury, possible cartilage tear -- day to day, saying he should be back in a week or so), but if I could get them to throw in Pierre Jackson and their willing to take Chandler + whatever other sweeteners this may require i.e. Murry, Aldrich, Tyler (I know he looks fairly promising but he's got a ways to go & could be replaced on the cheap quite easily, I think with a better, more polished player--Rich Howell for example. I'd wanna keep and develop Tyler, Aldrich too, but I wouldn't let either guy hold up this deal), a 2nd rounder etc. --- I make this trade. Might even have a chance to keep cash and a future 2 out of it -- keep these assets out of it and instead allocate them toward the draft... Add those 2 pieces to whatever decent guards we'll have left over (JR Smith/THJ/Shumpert?) and whatever other minor tweaks we could make to improve (call up Seth Curry or Kalin Lucas??), and voila -- instant revamped backcourt for the now & future. A backcourt that's no longer a weakness but a major strength for years to come...Allow Melo the chance to play with new, dynamic players like Evans & Jackson (Seth Curry as well?). DO IT!!

I'd take on Tyreke Evans, big contract/current injury and all. Bottom line -- his contract runs longer than Chandler's but Briggs is right -- Chandler's not the answer here, not at his salary. He just doesn't do enough for my money. He has games where he's engaged and you see the value, then there's plenty of other games where he's invisible and gives us next to nothing. I agree -- unload this guy while he still has perceived value. It would give them a legit big-name center who's played & thrived in that city before and it would give them a way to get out of Evans' contract, in effect saving them somewhere close to $15mm in salary. I'd be willing to take on Evans, man. What is he, 24-25 years old, right around there? I know he makes a little bit of money but come on -- if we got him, played him starter mins and gave him the JR Smith carte blanche on offense here -- I think we could get him back to where he was his rookie year production-wise. As Briggs pointed out -- last year he was very productive in Sacramento as well, putting up solid numbers and showing improved shooting (over 15 ppg on almost 48% FGs, almost 34% from 3). We get him to where he's filling out the stat sheet, scoring the ball at a high % (his game, when right is very high % -- much higher % ball player than JR Smith for example -- this guy lit us up at the Garden for what, 25? Did that w/o taking a single jump shot. Not one. Just continually carved us up like a holiday roast over and over). It's bold & we'll be taking on some salary -- some will say it's Isiah Thomas all over again -- doesn't feel like that to me though...When you really look at this -- this kid Evans is young, very talented with a lot of good basketball ahead of him if he's in the right situation (what better situation than NYC as Carmelo Anthony's right hand man, armed with 35+ mins., 20 shots a game and the ball in his hands a majority of the time...Plus, he's not some $20mm+ a year guy; he's an $11-10mm player. We get him to the point where he's somewhere between his rookie yr and last yr in Sac -- he'd be worth that type of money, hands down. Getting Pierre Jackson is just icing on the cake.

Be bold and MAKE THIS MOVE. Take the chance here. Melo's gonna need to see some kind of commitment from mgmt. to get this roster back on track if he's expected to stay. Now he's got Jimmy Boeheim in his ear telling him to go play for a contender. If we expect to keep this guy -- I mean it's true I guess -- he could walk on us for nothing -- we need to show him we're serious about reshaping this team back into a contender. Tyreke Evans along with Pierre Jackson could be a major step in the right direction.

felton couldn't score 58 points by running up and down the court with no one defending. he'd pass out long before that.

Felton has disappointed immensely. Just hasn't answered the bell at all... Have no choice but to carry him on the roster for the time being until we find a taker but bottom line -- he needs to sit. He's bringing absolutely nothing to the table. In fact, he's hurting us out there. We need a different look. I'd look to do something like this (Evans/Jackson) before mortgaging any more future 1st round picks for a guy like Lowry. Come on, enough's enough with the friggin' picks already... Yet another future pick for Lowry and then let's not forget, Lowry's gonna wanna get paid off the career year. And paid what exactly -- Tyreke Evans money?? Why not just keep the 1st round pick, Shumpert/THJ and whatever other assets Toronto's demands, and take on Evans' salary instead? What's Evans, a good 3-4 yrs younger than Lowry anyway, right? Plus, we get this kid Jackson who could be a real steal here, a jewel -- a better, more athletic Jameer Nelson and I think that might be conservative. Make this deal.

Fine--if Melo does not want to come back here--Id hold off trying to improve the team now--especially with $ that run longer than 2015. Id rather have maximum cap space and a top3 pick next year--sit tight.

I dunno man -- I'd like to see the team be proactive, either one way or another. Either we recognize that we are lucky enough to have a star/top 10 NBA player already in place and we do everything in our power to keep him in the fold and improve the team (sans trading away more picks -- if I were Melo, I wouldn't even want my team to deal anymore picks, even for a guy like Lowry but that's me) -- OR -- we do a 180 and systematically trade off every piece of value on this team starting with Chandler/Melo, working just as hard toward that goal...We're at the crossroads -- don't think I can get behind sitting on our hands and doing nothing at this point. That's what Mills and co. have done thus far and it gotten us nowhere. I fear if that continues to be the approach, mistakes will be made and opportunities will be missed/lost...In order to start executing either plan -- either forging ahead with Melo OR breaking it all down and rebuilding -- we might need a new GM in place that up for either task. Followed by a new coach with a new voice and fresh outlook on things. Woody's lost this team. Just a matter of time before he's gone... Maybe that's where it really needs to start -- GM, then head coach.

That ain't happening. We still owe Denver swap rights for the 1st round pick next year. That's right, it's the gift that keeps on giving for the Knuggets.

Fine--if Melo does not want to come back here--Id hold off trying to improve the team now--especially with $ that run longer than 2015. Id rather have maximum cap space and a top3 pick next year--sit tight.

That ain't happening. We still owe Denver swap rights for the 1st round pick next year. That's right, it's the gift that keeps on giving for the Knuggets.

Good point.

I think he may have meant this upcoming draft where Denver owns our 1st round pick outright....Regardless, so even if that's the case, what's the immediate plan exactly -- continue to play horrible ball and let Melo walk w/o any compensation at all? If we told Melo that we don't plan on doing anything significant until the summer of 2015 draft (essentially tanking in the process until we get there if I read you right) he'd want out tomorrow and I wouldn't blame him at all...I mean if the plan is to sit back and not do a thing beside wait until 2 drafts from now -- at the very least, we need to be working overtime to create a bidding war between whatever teams are out there that may have interest in Melo, starting with the Lakers and Chicago. Work feverishly to establish a trade market for this guy...That's what any halfway decent GM would be doing right now if they thought the current situation wasn't salvageable. Tell ya'll what -- there's no way Mark Cuban would stand for what's going on here, that's for sure. That guy's enthusiastic & loves him team...Meanwhile, what the hell's up with Mr. Mills?? Haven't heard a peep outta this guy. The only thing this guy's done so far is bring Chris Douglas-Roberts in to replace an injured Justin Brownlee on the preseason roster, a guy Mike Woodson never even gave a fair shot to and cut...What's he up to? We're right smack at the crossroads with team. What's this guy's plan? Stay the course and try to get better or break it all up and start over? Also, is he prepared to remove this ineffective coach, a move most of us have been calling for for months? What's up with this dude -- he's got the highest profile team in the league -- this is NYC man. He doesn't even have to talk to the media -- his actions would tell me where he wants to take this team. So far nothing though... Why not at least trim some BS off this roster and bring in some help from the D-league? I mean we can't even do that? Unacceptable.
