He took a few shots and was kinda walking around. He didn't even play cuz the tourney was kinda low level. He almost shut it down. He left the gym then stayed to watch a little then he left. That felt like a pro was in the building. Dude physically made me feel inferior at the time he was huge. Taller than I expected and built like a truck. I was like 14 or so and he had to be a senior. Made me question myself cuz I had to guard point guards cuz of my height. He was intimidating.

This reminds me of a tourney we had in the Bronx. The day before we were to play, we went out to the park to scout our next opponent and it was a team lead by Felipe Lopez. The park nearly got shut down because as you know, Felipe was a mega star in HS. People were climbing the fences to get a glimpse of the game. It was Felipe vs Waily Dixon (Main Event). Waily slammed it so hard, he bent the rim causing a delay of game and both teams had to finish the game on the next court.

Long story short, we were supposed to play Felipe's team the next day but he didn't show up. He was playing in 3 different tournaments at the time and decided to play in one of the others. Also, Tim Thomas was playing in that tournament as well....

How is the run there? I have been toying around with playing again. I suck though cuz I haven't touched the ball much at all for several years. Would like to get back out there this spring.

It's like any other place. Some times it's really good and you're playing with/against guys that are 10x better than you. Sometimes you're playing with guys that have no idea what they're doing. Saturday afternoons is the best. Tuesday and Wednesday nights aren't bad either but during the week is hit or miss.

It's pretty cool how many guys that are associated with entertainment and pro ball play pickup there. I've played with Jamie Fox, the dude from Spiderman and other guys that are awesome that I end up recognizing in pictures with Melo, Tyson, JR, etc that aren't pros but have obviously played at high levels.

Played against Tim Thomas (Freehold, NJ's finest) a few times. Frighteningly bad experience for me. Great guy, friendly, but so far above the comp in that summer league it was like a man among little mutant dwarf hamsters.

Played with ex-Heat (Riley's "Band-Aid") ex-Jazz John Crotty when he was still in the NBA; actually ran a few pick and pops with him and hit the shots in the lane!

One on one with Clinton Wheeler (early '90's) and Butch Beard (early '80's) at times when both were out of the league. Got destroyed both times, but dayum that was fun both times!

I played with J.Mashburn at Cardinal Hayes..I was on the Freshmen/JV team when he was a Senior and, obviously on Varsity, but towards the end of the season dressed for the Varsity games. Remember playing against K.Reeves that year as well.

Mash was a real nice dude...humble and very polite. I remember a lot of us thought he was going to end up at Syracuse.

Played and hung out with C.Arroyo in Miami back in the day through mutual friends. Great player...total douche bag.

Wow Uptown do you really think you could have held your own against Stephon Marbury? You must have had some game.

I could ball back then....Still can (I'm coaching middle school girls now). As good as I might have been, I wasn't near the level of Steph. Mainly because of the height differential. Steph was a legit 6-1' 6-2, I was only about 5-6/5-7. You really don't realize how good these NBA players are until you see them in person.

100% agree, there is this famous gym here in Atlanta called Run and shoot.... you will find a lot of college stars and NBA stars there playing... some years ago, Iverson was there with stackhouse, and Travis best... Jeff sheppard ( the white guy who played for kentucky who could jump out the gym) was also there.. let me tell you this.

Stackhouse was just cruising... Travis best was easily blowing past everyone.. even Jeff shepphard was dominating.. but iverson.. Dude was playing like it was an NBA finals game.. rofl.. and boy if you think he is unguardable in the NBA, imagine to regular street guys..

he could have scored 200 points if the game went that long.. jumpers from everywhere, blowing buy guys, fast break dunks, I mean it was almost like he was from another planet.. haha..

Jeff sheppard who couldn't even stick in the NBA was beasting. We played against him. we had this guy on our team, a friend of mine who was a HS star, 6'6 good athlete, and jeff shepphard took him to school a bit.... I was like.. Yikes!!! LOL I was a pretty good HS player, but boy you see the difference of those guys on the next level..

Great story bro...I actually reside in the Atl now and am familiar with the famous Run and Shoot gym...Haven't had a chance to get down there yet, though.

I grew up in Edenwald projects in the Bronx and one of the best players in the projects (along with Eric Mobley who was drafted by the Bucks and played for Vancouver) was a dude by the name of Marion Cash (played Pg for Clemson. He was on the Clemson team with Elden Campbell and Dale Davis that lost to Uconn on the last second shot from Tate George in the 1990 NCAA tournament)

Anyway, he had an okay career in Clemson, averaged about 8pts per game in a tough ACC. But when he came home, he would play summer league ball at Dyckman which is well known for having great runs and where numerous NBA players show up and play. During this one summer, Marion Cash averaged about 35-40 pts per. Dude looked like Jordan out there. An he wasn't playing against no slouches. He competed against Future, Master Rob, and other legends at the time. I'm scratching my head like "how is this dude dominating everyone out here, yet he can't score more than 8 pts per in the ACC?"

Watching him dominate that summer league and just look average in the ACC had me reevaluate my game and future plans real quick...lol. Knew instantly that the NBA might not be in my future....

LOL.. quick story... remember Jamal walker from Xavier? he played with tyrone hill and they upset Georgetown in the NCAA tourney.. well jamal used to give kenny anderson fits in HS, he was a year older than me, but his younger brother was in my class and was pretty nice, i used to hang with him.. well we played vs jamal one time, and he was like dude, you are good, if you can hang with my brother, that will do a lot for confidence... ahhhhh jamal dragged me from baseline to baseline.... LOL not that I couldn't hold my own, but it took every ounce of skill I had to stay close.. he was just coasting..lol... and this dude was a division 1 four year starting PG who upset G'town... he could not make NBA.. I kind of figured It wasn't in the cards for me pretty early as well.. haha..

BTW: welcome to Atlanta, I usually get great seats from my client to Hawks games.. when I get an extra I will let you know.. leave me your email and I will leave a ticket and parking pass for you at will call and we can catch a game, always good to watch ball with fellow knick fans, even if we don't agree.. we still are fans...... Small world indeed. Yes, Edenwald projects was off the chain back in the 80's and 90's. Correct, Eric Mobley played for Pitt before being drafted. I used to ball with his younger brother.

Not only do I remember Jamal Walker and them damn Muskateers that upset my Hoyas, but I have that game on DVD. (I am/was an rabid Big East fan back in the 80's and 90's and have a ton of 'Cuse and G Town games on tape and dvd.) I believe it was in that game when he threw that between the legs backwards pass to a team mate for a dunk. David Edwards played for Georgetown that year as well. I think he was from the BX and I'm sure you remember him. He was about 5'9 and averaged 40pts per as a senior in HS. Crazy!

BTW, never played with or against Future but dude was a street legend at a very young age. He used to ball with Shane 'the dribble machine' Woney who is also from my hood, and we used to travel and watch them dominate and clown other teams....The talent that never made it to the next level is ridiculous....

I am headed to the heat game in a couple of hours.. seats are the next row behind the courtside seats.. still on the floor... nice... now that is unless you have tickets yourself.. I don't want to assume...

I forgot about DAvid edwards..... wasn't tall, but guy had mad game..

future was a beast.... dude had handles for days since we were kids.. LOL..

I got plenty of basketball stories with most of the athletes out of Arizona....Before and after Agent Zero came out. I didn't know he would be that good in the NBA. Every crossover move was a carry....
I predicted Jordan Hill wouldn't be that good, because I was able to move him off the block a few times, and I'm 6'0 with shoes on.

But there was one game I remember, and this was back in college (92 maybe). I played with 2 chains (Alabama), and this was before he was 2 chains. Him and his boy or brother (both tall) was on my team, and they wasn't involved in the game as much as they should've been. So 2-chains came over to me and said, Yo...just throw it up near the rim. So I did my Paul Pierce move on the break, where you take one hard dribble, carry the ball over the defenders head, take two steps and usually it's a wide open up and under layup (Gets the crowd going).

But this time (knowing 2-chains was following me on the break), after taking those two steps, I just let it float in the air near the rim (stupid me stayed under the rim).....2 chains court it in the air, and dunked on me so hard, I didn't know if I should be happy or sad....He came out of no where....But thats all he was good for....dunking. He chose the right career as 2-chains the rapper.

Oh yeah, I saw Agent Zero dunk on so many local ballers, it's not even funny (I mean nuts in your face type dunks). Arenas was only 6'2...but he dunks like he's 7'0 tall....Long arms. Then I saw him get dunked on by Dickerson (legit 6'6 old school guard who was in the NBA but played at university of arizona...he was out of the NBA at the time and just visiting the local AZ gym).

Recently played with ex NBA guys around my age (40)....Didn't know who they were at the time, but when somebody told me, I put it on this one guard who was my hieght, but was slow on defense. I had my best game ever, scoring about 14 points and the game was to 16....Not long after that, I injured my other achilles....It's been down hill from there....Going on 41 next month.

If I took basketball serious, I would've been either in the NBA or overseas somewhere.....At one point, I was considered unguardable....Would dominate on both ends at any gym I go to...either you were too small or too big and slow....(keep in mind, this was in Tucson, AZ at this time....NY / east coast competition would be harder).....Had a solid jumpshot, and quick first step (which is how I burned out my achilles)....too many first step hesitation moves....and never stretched until I was in my mid 30's.....Somebody said I played like Stevenson (Pacers guard) and Bruce Bowen mixed together....

Born in Brooklyn, Raised in Queens, Lives in Maryland. The future is bright, I'm a Knicks fan for life!
