Different cases. Before he was offered the contract, Smith was figuratively screaming "I am a f' up!!! I will f' you over!!!" Just as he did in both of the times he was in the playoffs with us. Yet... We ignored all of the so called red flags and signed him anyway. Now people are surprised by his antics? Give me a flippin' break.

There are plenty of people who are tough but from the suburban neighborhoods. That is irrelevant IMO. He is not one of those tough people though.

oh I agree but he certainly isn't a tough guy who's had to fight for what he's got. The way he acts you'd think he's from the Newark projects. I grew up in the suburbs and knew tough guys and new guys who wanted everyone to think they were tough. JR is in the latter category and frankly I don't have respect for anyone in that group

I don't really respect that either. Tough people don't need to put it on display for everyone to see. I consider Iman Shumpert, Amar'e Stoudemire and even Melo to be tough.

Last season JR put a lot of extra work in during the offseason, he played well, the team was doing well and there were a lot of tough vets to keep him in check. This season I think it's a combination of his frustration over his bad play from the surgery, the team losing etc, that's just led to him goofing off.

He is part of that Denver 3, as I call them that has done nothing but poison this franchise....

as the writer said.. the knicks deserve him!!

I think articles like this cross the line- I get annoyed at his attitude basketball wise, but on the grand scheme of things, untying someone's shoe laces, playing with room service and smoking weed doesn't make you evil or a modern day monster.

Smith's always loved to play the part of a tough city kid, but truth be told, he's a soft, spoiled, suburban jump-shooter.
OUCH!
Makes me think back to when he was wolfing at Brandon Jennings on twitter. He was gonna get some homies from arond the way to do what? LOL

I dont see him being portrayed as such, just as a immature idiot and fugazy and when you consider that translates directly to how JR plays and his behavior on the court its spot on

Agreed. Especially this:
After his release from prison four years ago, Smith sat inside a New Jersey country club, and told me how the death of his close friend, caused by Smith's recklessness behind the wheel, had changed his life. From the guilt over the death, to a summer in a prison cell, to wanting his young daughter to never have to keep reading about his misdeeds, Smith vowed to be a changed man.

“I think I was a follower to an extent,” Smith told me. “If someone would ask me to do something that was on the borderline, more than likely I’d say, ‘OK, let’s go.’ Now, I think I see the bigger picture finally …I think I need to mature and understand what I say before I say it, and what I do before I do it."

He can make it sound so sincere, but the con never ends. J.R. Smith was raised in a suburban, middle-class home with two good parents and access to an excellent education

JR's situation with being in prison and learning from that should draw no parallels to what he's done on the court this season. In the grand scheme of things, untying someones shoe is not that bad.

In the NBA it is very easy to replace 18 points per game especially if the player is allowed to jack shots up.

Is that why only 32 guys in a league of 400 do it? I agree that JR is a bum but that comment is far off base.

doesn't matter what pampered, leafy suburb he grew up in-- he is a lowlife. he either lacks values or simply does not possess them. tats, gang signs, all his shenanigans... all add up to this.

and yes these things that can and do show up on the court. too bad dolan is also a lowlife. like attracts like.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

You know, the only thing I am upset at JR over in his career as a Knick was his disappearing act in the playoffs. Most of this Twitter crap and shoelace scandal is nonsense. He's a streaky shooter, we knew that when we signed him the first time. He's emotional and it shows both up and down. But I would not sell low on this guy. Maybe his role of 6th man is the most he will be. Just one step off the spotlight. The shame of it is giving up on that upside potential, but with 4 good years left in his career, its hard to sell me on upside potential. He is what he is.

That said, THJ is waiting in the wings for his shot and might be the guy to be that 6th man shooter, so if the brass decide JR's prima donna drama is too much, I'm not sure JR brings much more to the table than THJ can. This year at least, THJ's PER is 5 points higher than JR's.

I'd like to see JR succeed here, but not at the expense of the drama and our yoots.

You know I gonna spin wit it

I'll be honest. I wouldn't give a crap if JR untied shoes or made stupid twitter posts if he gave us last year's production. He can act the fool, but he better realize that production is the only thing that matters. I think we should have given THJ more of JR minutes a long time ago. Not because of his personality issues, but because he is a liability on the court. There's no need to baby this dude. We have options at the wing. Play him when he gets his game together.

sorry, jr was really good for us last year. wojo is a muckraker.

that is not deniable, regardless of how ridiculously disappointing he has been this season.

i want him to succeed like we all do.

i hope he can respond. if not he will likely be gone.

First and foremost, I really didn't have that strong of an opinion either way, but with that said, why shouldn't people who wanted to resign JR coming off a 6th man of the year award, carrying the Knicks offensively while Melo was out and showing some of his best behavior in years, have a future basketball opinion taking serious? So, have you all of your sports opinions been dead on? This post reeks of a typical, I was right and you was wrong....

Papabear Says

The knicks were poison before the Denver 3 got here. For 13 years. bad years. They won 54 games with JR Smith last year. He messed up now he has to go, but don't forget what he did. He Helped win those 54 games.

There were people obsessing over him despite the red flags as if he were the second coming. I am more so directing that statement towards them. I wont mention names but if you are here frequently you should know some of the people I am talking about. I was adamantly against getting this guy at any point. It was a clearly obvious thing to me and after we dealt with so many headcases like him, we needed nothing of him. It was amazing to me that so many people supported going after him.

I am not right all of the time and don't even care to say I am right most of the time. I offer my opinion (much more so in the past than recently bc I haven't posted as much) and if you like it, I'm glad I could have possibly enlightened you and if not, oh well.

And for the record, I warmed up to the guy too before the playoffs. As soon as everything unfolded the way things did, I realized he isn't changing nor helping this franchise. But hey, if he turns around his season and performs like the talented 2/3 he is in the playoffs, I will be thrilled to eat crow.
