Houston and Childs? Not stars but fairly decent FA nabs at the time.

LJ too

those were not stars, Houston at the time was about as good as JR, childs was about as good as felton.

LJ had back troubles and was no where the player he was his first yrs in the league.

What stars have been available since melo got here, and have we even sniff the cap room to sign them. Dont think because a star didn't take a massive pay cut to play here means he doesn't want to play with melo..

Superstars didn't change teams like they do now. There was no collusion like you had in Miami. Players took pride in staying with the teams that drafted them and doing all they can to bring them championships. Jordan Olajuwon Karl Malone Stockton David Robinson Kevin Johnson Ewing

Barkley and Shaq where in the minority as far as playing for multiple teams

You are way off on those assessments. Houston was an up-and-coming young guy with HUGE pockets of potential and was the biggest FA in the market that year, lots of teams were after him - no one was or has been after after JR in the same way. Childs had a breakout year with NJ and was heads above where Felton is today and was in Portland. Think of Felton after his good first run in NY but perhaps a bit better.

Yea problem is Child's was in great shape in a contract year with NJ and we were going to push the ball more. Of course he came he and got fat like a lot of other Knicks

I still liked him. He had guts like all the guys on those teams and a knack for hitting big shots

Totally agree with fact that players didn't change teams the way they do now...As far as the NBA being a joke right now, I think all that changed when McHale(former Celtic) traded Garnett to Boston, won a Chip and Jerry West practically gave Gasol to the Lakers, won a Chip...Players looked at that and said why should they(management in collision) be the ones who makes the decision on where I play and with whom...That in my opinion opened a Pandora's box...

But this was also made easy the LeBron's draft class which had so many good players with the same type expiring deals..I think it will be difficult with guys with different expiry on their contracts(Melo/CP3)..

I agree with you and guns to a certain extent, houston was a FA the same yr reggie miller was, so houston was plan B, childs definitely had a break out yr with the nets , and I would say he was better then felton on the defensive side, but I blame woodson some what for feltons drop off..he's been regulated to coming down the courtand throwing the ball to melo in ISO mode..

Good point. It's a joke how teams like LA and Boston can work lopsided deal yet everytime we make a deal teams ask for the moon and we wind up paying for it shortly after for a long time

Not me, I blame Felton. His D sucks cause he doesn't make an effort. And he is NY's starting PG, if he doesn't want ISO Melo mode he can change that for the team by going and demanding the ball back.

Injuries have slowed Felton but I am of the opinion that if you are hurt to the point where you are detrimental, then sit. NY got 4 PGs on the roster.

I can't argue that at all, I definitely think the injury thing has slowed him but, you can't take away the mind set the coach puts him in, the same way MDA had him thinking go go go...

If you ask me, the coach is just as important when it comes to attracting FA

I think the way it went down was the plane went to Detroit to sign H20 who at age 24 had a break out season with the pistons. Detroit had a young and very healthy "star to be" in Grant Hill! The story was if Allan don't sign, then they were off to sign Reggie. That might be legend but I thought I recall a story as told by Grunfeld about this. Detroit was trying to sign Mutumbo. This was the year Shaq was a free agent and things were wide open!

Allan signs a 7 year 55mil with an opt out and handshake deal for a bigger deal. We had just traded Mason for LJ because we could take LJ's big contract. small market hornets could not keep him and his BAD BACK on the books!!!

All this was done a year after Ewing had resigned with us and JVG was installed as his patsy.

At the time Allan was a young player breaking out and his upside was still higher. To spread the floor out with a player shooting 42% from 3pt land was huge. I can't find anything to back up my Allan before reggie theme. I believe it is more widely reported that Reggie shot down the knicks.

Knicks were trying hard to get a trade together to get Barkley here the same summer.

reference "Grunfeld choose Houstan over Reggie Miller"
http://nypost.com/1999/06/13/knicks-ern-ing-their-stripes-grunfelds-guys-wow-checketts/

But as most have reported it was the other way around.

Good article BTW to that summer and what went down.

Old SAS article that does support that Knicks were able to get Allan and Childs for what it would have taken to sign Reggie. http://articles.philly.com/1996-08-04/sports/25645282_1_salary-cap-knicks-reggie-miller

That summer Jordan and Phil Jax were both available, as well as shaq. Not saying either wanted a piece of NY.

What you have to look at is Steinbrenner got his stars often while the knicks rarely got their man. George was able to pay more.

Excellent point....The media in NYC is our worse enemy. I know I wouldn't want to deal with it.

With that said, players will go where the money is at regardless of managaement.

Fudge that! melo came to be a star and fully knew the roster would be challanged. He was to be the face of the franchise and in NY, as anywhere when you do that you take the Heat. Lebron had huge pressure first year in Miami and they jelled, and went to finals and faced not just miami media crush but the whole basketball world was on Lebrons back!

And how he respond? Back to back chips!!! Hell of a think when you think about it.

"Coming home" was a set up that many fans bought into. Look at the roster and you knew. Chandler was a nice addition but his injury history was there all along. DPOY was a nice bonus. Amare we knew was flawed. If we knew all this, so did Melo!

Personally I think Melo has handled himself great and the media not too bad. Sure he gets called out for hoisting as many shots and his style of game is not condusive to carrying a franchise for LONG periods of time. Problem is not melo, its the price we paid to get him and the short term crush to solve it that fails!!!!

We have seen this starphuch movie before. Do I want Melo to stay under the same circumstances? No.

Too many moons and stars had to line up just right to make this have worked. Dolan spends money but leverages too many assets.

There is a price to pay and if any P.R. should be set it should be how to sell a rebuild!

its a fair question. Right now its hard to envision any bigtime FA wanting to come here. Front office is a turnover machine full of donkeys. The press is annoying, and thats not helped by MSGs idiotic media policies. The types of guys you will get are the ones looking for a better paycheck. That means continuing the trend of overpaying for MLE guys who are low impact. Jared Jeffries, Clarence Weatherspoon... guys that a good for $2-$3mm as role players and terrible as full MLE type guys.

The way this all changes is simply (cause its simple) establish some continuity. Consistent team plan, coaching, GM...

question:

Does Amare sign here without Walsh and MDA? Does Melo force a trade here with out them?

I think the over paying our players are in the past. Since Walsh set the tone, other then amare who have we over pd?

Amare had no where else to sign. The Suns offered him 5 years with only 3 guaranteed. No one else was offering what the Knicks offered so yeah I think anyone could have been running the Knicks and Amare would have came. He also had to have a reconciliation meeting with D'Antoni. Not sure if Melo comes if Amare isn't in NY though.
