Dancing harry applies "the hex"!

Dancing Harry first started dancing at basketball games around 1969.[b] The Baltimore crowd was dead, and he had been drinking a few beers when his friends convinced him to dance.[5][6] While performing in Baltimore, he befriended Monroe. When Monroe moved to play for the Knicks, Cooper followed and brought his act to New York.[1] Late in the 1971–72 season, Cooper asked the Knicks for permission to dance at their games, but he was denied. He went to a Knicks game anyways, arriving at halftime in a game that the Boston Celtics led by 20. The Knicks Willis Reed asked Cooper why he was not dancing. Cooper told him the front office did not approve. "The hell with the front office, Harry. Do something!'", Reed said.[2]

Cooper started dancing, the crowd cheered, and the Knicks eventually won the game. Dancing Harry became a celebrity. He donned outlandish outfits with a black cap, a floppy cap or hat, and often had platform shoes. His hexes excited the crowd and distracted opponents, adding to the Knicks' already formidable home-court advantage. He never received any compensation from the Knicks. In 1973, the Knicks won an NBA championship, but rumors circulated during the playoffs that the Knicks front office was not crazy with Harry. Their owner, Ned Irish, was a traditionalist. When Cooper arrived for 1973–74 season, ushers at the Knicks home at Madison Square Garden told Cooper he could not dance, and he was ejected when he tried anyways.[2]

Cooper took his act to Nassau Coliseum, where he was welcomed by the New Jersey Nets. With Dancing Harry performing, the Nets with star Julius Erving won the 1974 ABA championship. Harry danced for another decade, including a move to Indianapolis, where he became the Indiana Pacers' first mascot and was paid nightly.[2]

The Daily News called Harry a "trailblazer of sorts", as nearly every NBA team by 2003 had a paid squad of dancers, providing entertainment other than basketball as part of the game experience.[2] He also inspired Dancing Barry, who debuted at a Houston Rockets game against the Knicks in the 1975 NBA Playoffs.[3][7]

Long Live Dancing Harry

Nalod - that qualifies as the best damn post of the year.

"The hell with the front office, Harry. Do something!'", Reed said.

At the height of his powers, the MSG organist would follow Harry with a few choice chords as he applied the hex to the opponents bench.

Well done sir. Well done.

Now when the team is balling and playing the right way, MSG becomes a sports and adult entertainment arena and nobody complains about anything.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

HA HA! Will their mommies be on the sidelines serving cookies too?

On further thought, maybe Chris Smith could do something useful by dressing up as Mrs. Claus to serve the cookies
while James Dolan rides him around in a sleigh.

Start I Man Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr in the backcourt and leave them there for the next three years. They bring size, athleticism, intuitive feel for the game, passion and competitive fire.

If JR Smith wants the job, dare him to earn it by building on his excellent regular season.

Any flaws these three have, (ball security/ shot selection) can be corrected with reps and trust.

You get my vote for next Knicks coach with this one.

JohnStarksFan - from your keyboard to Cablevisions corporate headquarters in Bethpage, Long Island.

Next, you find a 6'8 swing forward with the ball handling and toughness of Anthony Mason, and the court awareness of Billy Cunningham, Cazzie Russell or Bobby Dandridge (you could look it up)

Finally, we desperately need a 6'10 strong forward who enjoys setting picks and rebounding. A step back 12 foot jumper would be even better. The mid range shot is a lost art. A Terry Cummings clone. Cummings only had a cup of coffee in NYC, but he was too legit to keep out of the paint.

Now you can think about playing Knicks basketball.

The intros, NYC Dancers, and hoopla are for the fans, not the players.

You have to remember, we are the hardcore basketball purists who can watch basketball for a long time and not get bored. However, the typical fan isn't like that and needs the extra incentive to come to the games. They need to add reasons to bring families to games too.

Yea especially the type of fans that fill the Garden and Dolans pockets these days. A 25 win team will change things a little next year

There will be some empty seats again and you will be able to go to a game in a newly multiple-billion dollar renovated arena for $30-40 bucks. Hopefully to see young Knicks play and develop for a coach with a great young coaching mind

gunsnewing - are you suggesting that James Dolan and Cablevision would trust our beloved Knicks franchise with a yoot like Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart?

Think again. In the process, lets match our (cough) progress with the do-over Boston Celtics.

The trade deadline is 84 days away. The speculation will swirl like an F5 tornado.

After investing a billion dollars in the renovated MSG, it would be a paradigm shifter if a blockbuster/restart deal was swung by Steve Mills.

The fancy-schmancy player introductions only serve to elevate the spectators of fans and tourists alike. When the product does not match the hype, In creating outsized expectations, it only intensifies the frustration.

Again, you're talking from a hardcore fan standpoint. A big time Knick fan will get as frustrated as he or she allows him/herself to be. A typical fan will be dissapointed and then go back to their lives and be just fine.

With that said, you're looking way too deep into this. It's not a big deal. If anything, they are somewhat fun... and that's coming from a basketball purist.

It would be punishing paying customers for mgmt miscues. Sounds all too familiar. I will bet an overwhelming majority of the fans who pay top dollar go to games don't want a JV basketball experience. They see plenty of that on the court right now. No good reason why it should be expanded IMO.
