Too many miscommunications on both ends, particularly offense. We kept our turnovers down last year because we kept it SIMPLE, which is fine for a while but doestn work come playoff time. Yeah, you wont turn it over 20 times if "he" is standing there with the ball for 12 seconds...Sorry I mentioned "him". I like the sets were running. But this team has more growing to do. Lots more potential here than last year. Let's get it done. we got tons of vets.
The reason why it's sloppy is because our coach runs iso plays, so everybody stands around and watch because they are used to running iso offense, waiting to hopefully get an open pass. Bargs at one point, ran into the driving lane during an iso play, because bargs is new to this stagnant offense. But when we don't run iso plays, everybody begins to move around with some motion, in the case of Shump. You are coached as a little kid that if you want the ball, you have to keep moving. Usually people will pass it to a slashing player thats moving. And this is coming from myself who's always been known as an ISO player, because I had the skill to beat ANYBODY off the dribble, and a goog passer when doubled. Now that I'm 40 with two surgeries, I appreciate structure and pick and roll plays. It's a better offense for the entire team, vs standing around watching me. As you reach your 30, you have to understand that you can't beat everybody off the dribble like you used to.
Basically, we have a mixed bag of iso players, system players, slow players, low IQ players and a defensive assistant coach as the head coach. You can't fix lateral quickness over night. You can't fix low IQ players either. But you can put in some kind of structure that fits your current players. Shump is not a stand still spot up shooter (Novak is, but thats for another topic). Shump is a scorer that thrives on movement. Same with Hardaway and others like Udrih. But when they stand around most of the time, watching a certain player run iso plays....Or watching our PG and Center play two man ball.....The others are forced to stand around and watch......Turning them into spot up shooters, which they are not. It also deflates the teams energy when they continue to watch other play, but now have to sprint back and play defense. If we run ISO offense, maybe we should run ISO defense....Seems only fair to the other players that just stand around and watch others pound the ball during the entire shot clock.
I'm not against the system.....I'm against the disconnect between the players and the system. Either system or players have to go.....take your pick!
