With the possible exception of Rondo, I don't see how any of those players in 2015 can tip us from title pretender to contender.

Parker will be 33 and I'm not convinced that either Aldridge or Love are that good that whatever roster we have in 2015 (assuming Melo is the main cog, and that he is also 2 years older and much worn in the tooth).

Maybe if you are somehow able to do the impossible and add 2 of them (Love/Rondo?) to Melo at a home town discount contract (yes, not happening), maybe then.

But I tend to think we're trapped at an L Point (langrangian) between championship contender and Lottery Winner - neither good enough to advance far nor bad enough to actually add the kind of superstar talent that is transformative.

A lot of posters have been very anti this contract and one of the complaints was that it was 4 years. Hopefully this eases their concerns. Smith signing in my opinion had to happen/

trust me, it won't end.

big assumption that in the right situation main cog guys will take less money, only way it happens.

Chandler (discount), Love (discount), Melo (discount), Shump, Rondo (discount). THJr, Felton, JR.

Not a bad team and could definitely compete against any team.

The Knicks will never win anything as long as Dolan is at the helm. Melo will get a max deal at 20MM plus and be on the downswing of his career. We have no first round picks, bad management and continue to make signings like Camby, Novak, pick up player options only to amnesty all flexibility. It's downright disgraceful to root for a team with top 4 resources that continues to repeat the same stupid mistakes for 10 plus seasons.

Why would any free agent waste there time coming to NY. Our talent pool is Hardaway Jr and Shumpert, it's mind blowing how we give up every young piece, draft pick we ever bring in for overpaid ****ty veterans.

lol you may be right Martin. I wasn't always like this. The Knicks have done this to me. We've been burned so many times like no other canvases has that I always expect the worse. It still doesn't help soften the blow tho

Melo is not going to be the main cog of a championship team - I just don't see it happening. Second option yes, tgat is possible.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Sorry - I'm allergic to kool aid.

Personally - its hard to be a fan. I grew up in the area, and never picked being a knick fan. But I will say this, Dolan is probably doing as good a job of making me pick a new team as any thing else.

Yeah but there's a big difference between kool aid and being a fan who enjoys rooting for team. There are major flaws in Knicks ownership no doubt, but there are some positives too and it's not all gross like it was for LAC for many years.

Some seem like you are expecting Spurs or OKC (who has major spending flaws too) and when you don't get that you poo-poo everything.

There is no reason to be positive with anything associated with this franchise.

We have an idiot for an owner, who will never sell. This is the guy that didn't want to give Marv Albert a raise, but will pay 11MM for a sexual harrassment lawsuit after the ******* he hired to be general manager cost him 200MM in revenue and made his franchise a laughing stock nationally. Our media policy is disgraceful. Our medical staff isn't first rate. We have hired and fired coaches like it's like they are the 15th guy filling out our roster.

I am all for being positive, however. Blowing our amnesty probably cost this team a shot at Paul and Howard this offseason. Houston managed to get two superstars, we have 1, explain how we managed to do that. We spent a decade to rebuild a team so they can win one playoff series. We are the fifth best team in the conference and our coach allows Melo and JR to kill all offensive production by isolating.

Melo will be paid like a supstar for five years when he opts out, but will only give you star production for two years. Love, Rondo, LA are not winning us a championship. We have never been and will be fiscally prudent. Our owner needs to murder the fans with increased ticket prices and parade names out there.

If we had a really good rookie, a big man that had a post move, a healthy forward, a solid backup point guard and some direction i would gladly be optimistic. But, be realistic.

I know we're going to end up with Love because I can't stand him!

The tricky thing is is that hardly any of the top FAs to be actually reach free agency these days- they either get an extension or they force a trade.

Some posters seem to have become fixed on the Miami Heat rebuild, but it really was a once in a lifetime thing- 3 friends, all FAs at once and one of them was an uber talent in Lebron. I'd rather take a more gradual approach and aim for 2 max contracts and a good team around them than 3 max contracts surrounded by garbage.

I disagree this is not about Miami. The Knicks mortgaged every asset and continue to do so for 1 player. Now that 1 player doesn't have sufficient help

That's true it was suppose to be Amare and Melo. I was responding to the idea that Knicks fans want to follow the Miami model which isn't true. Personally I rather have some assets and flexibility and when the right situation presents itself then use those assets wisely. Not in one deal
