I wonder how long Chris Smith's contract is.

I agree that 4 years is too much. Smith can't keep his head on straight for one full season and now they are rewarding with him 4 years after 2 consecutive years where he showed nothing in the playoffs.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/source-knicks-finalizing-deal-bring-back-smith-article-1.1389772

J.R. Smith and the Knicks are finalizing a contract extension that will keep the NBA’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year with the club for another four years.

According to a Knicks source, the deal could be completed by Thursday.

Smith is expected to receive the “Average Player Salary Exception” which could amount to $24 million over four seasons.

The expected signing assures the Knicks of having their top five players under contract next season; Smith, Carmelo Anthony, Iman Shumpert, Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler. Also, according to a Latin website, the Knicks have offered free agent point guard Pablo Prigioni a two-year contract extension.

A person who spoke to the 35-year-old Prigioni on Wednesday told The News that Prigioni “hopes” a deal is completed “real soon.”

Prigioni is a priority because Jason Kidd retired, leaving Felton as the only point guard under contract.

It is what it is. He's worth that type of money and can be traded if the cap space is needed. He is great value for that cost so Don't think it's a concern. He and Felton will always be tradeable because you know what they can give you and they are affordable.

Does not surprise me. We gave Novak and Felton 4yrs when their were no other bidders

Hopefully the 4th yr is a team option but I doubt it. Knicks don't operate that way. They are clumsy

Not exactly. If it was a two year deal and JR stunk next year then it would be easier to trade him since he would be an expiring. Giving a unreliable guy like him 4 years isnt smart. Also felton loves new york and hates to play anywhere else. We all know how he did in portland but he is not as tough to move since he only has 2 years left i think

Three of the 4 years would absolutely be useless. I can't imagine give such a unreliable guy that kind of years. Knicks aren't that dumb are they? At least Novak and Felton don't have character issues that affect their team.

well he played for two mil last year was the second best player on the team and won sixth man of the year. He sucked in the playoffs but next year he wont have to be the second option. I think this is a good signing. Knicks either get jr or get nothing. It will be interesting to see if the fourth year is a team option.

But what really makes JR smith unreliable? He has excelled in the same role his entire career. He is a hell of a 6th man and scoring spark off the bench. The only thing that makes him unreliable is when he is expected to be more than what he is. He is inconsistent and frustrating, but as a whole he has been solid in his role his entire career. He will never really lose his trade value at that cost unless something off the court or injury related occurs. The contract we sign him for is a bargain for a big time scorer and 6th man.

Not a good signing if its 4 years. We saw that with the Novak contract. Yes he is better player but he is very unreliable. Secondly we cant say for sure Bargnani will be our second option since we dont even know if he will last the season because he is very injury prone

How is he unreliable? You're joking right? Maybe you missed his suspension and clubbing during the playoffs taht obviously had a horrible effect on him. Secondly besides last year JR smith was always a streaky player. Im a loyal fan but im also not afraid to call teh team out when i feel they are making a bad decision that may effect teh future. God knows the Knicks have earned taht criticism the past decaded

I hope we will be good enough to have the luxury of burying Smith deep on the bench if he goes back to the constant partying and the bad decision making on and off the floor. Hope Smith shows the Knicks that they made the right decision. Stay tuned I guess...
