I think it is a smart move on his part to bring in Lawerence Frank.

Brian Shaw is 47 years old Jason Kidd is 40 I don't see how it's possible they were high school rivals unless Shaw got left back 7 times lol

Seriously...Pretty clear now why Kidd called it a career so abruptly...

He's also 40 years old, washed up, terrified to shoot the ball, and ended his career not scoring a single point in 10 straight games. Jordan retiring in '93 after winning his 3rd title was abrupt not this.

Abrupt meaning, he was hired as Nets coach about 9 days after he retired. Smells like something was already going on behind the scenes between Kidds reps and the Nets before he retired.....

From what I have read there was a "mystery man" involved during the process. Seems like the Nets knew the direction they wanted to go in.

Brian Shaw will get a job but reality is he has been passed over a few times now. Why? Don't know. Nets wanted a guy with presence and the aura of awesomeness. Kidd brings that and they will market it.

Nets did not want a retread and are taking a risk. That alone should be applauded as they are thinking outside the box. They are taking a risk and its possible it don't work because he will make mistakes. Point guards make the best coaches historically.

Im not worried about his drinking. Im sure some of the best coaches in the history of all sports were miserable drunks and had all kinds of problems. At some level he had to prove he is ok.

I don't know how happy Net fans are as most seemed to want Shaw and the triangle and I get that. Sort of PhilJax by proxy.

Kidd will command respect by the team and the fans. Can he maintain it and be successful with a pretty good roster?

We'll find out!

Not necessarily.

Jerry Sloan and Pat Riley were both guard/forwards. Phil Jackson was a forward/center. I think Bill Russell, Don Nelson, Richie Cunningham were all bigs too.

how do you know he will command respect? He has to get respect as a coach before he can maintain it. I think yoh are assuming he has it. it will be interesting to see what type of style of play he wants to have.

Riles and Jax were those great bench players who paid attention.

Bill Russell was awful as coach. Did one year as Player/coach with celts but in seattle he was a bust. Wiliis as not good.

Kevin Loughry.

Collins was a combo guard.

Larry Brown was a PG.

Sloan was a 2.

Billy Cunningham was a 3.

Mark Jax

There will always be more coach's without chips than those with! IN the last 30 years, Riles, Jax and Pop have 66% of them (20)!

Can Kidd become one of those them? I don't know.

I figure Nets Owner and Billy Kings #1 goal was to unseat the NYKNICKS as NEW YORKS #1 TEAM.

Jason Kidd retired midway through the season while playing for the Knicks.

Now we know why Woody kept playing Jason Kidd when he played like trash ! Just to stay on his good side knowing Kidd had a lot to offer in Basketball IQ.

Jason Kidd probably figures if going farther than and beating the knicks in the division is the primary goal of the Brooklyn Nets organization, then the job should be easy for him knowing exactly what Woody's tendencies are in multiple situations.

He also knows Melos temperament and attitude and how the other players feed off him & how they really feel about Melo behind closed doors and will use that to his advantage.

Who do you think on the team was the player Jason Kidd confided in last season on the Knicks ?

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

He can't. The NBA doesn't allow player-coaches because it circumvents the salary cap.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

I read that the Knicks would have to consent to Kidd returning as a player, should he attempt the player/coach role.

I expect Kidd to be a good coach. May take a year or two to get into the swing, but down the road, absolutely a very basketball intelligent person.
No ill wishes because he left us - he was clearly out of gas, and getting that salary off the cap is a nice perk.

That said, he's going to the Nets. I will be rooting for his failure.

This is a major PR as well as basketball move by the NETS.

Nets ownership wants to be the King of NY and used Kidd as a marketing tool!

why not? Kidd knows all the Xs and Os. The rest is putting in the work and motivating guys. NBA coaching isnt cutting edge stuff. Have talent, play hard = wins. Its that simple.

You are right. I guess they went to rival high schools. A friend of mine at work was a reporter in the Bay Area when Kidd went to high school. He covered him and has remained friends and we were talking about the potential Kidd hire in NJ and he mentioned that Kidd and Shaw went to rival high schools and that the school Shaw went to was bigger and always beat the school Kidd went to until Jason was there. This guy also told me he might be able to bring to the party they have for Kidd when he is elected to the hof. He has incredible stories, covered the Warriors for awhile, and a lot of big name players when they were in high school in California.
