Melo brings the ball up so he can get the ball early, before the double team comes. I've been in Melo's position before as the go to guy finishing games. I would rather bring the ball up, than work extra hard fighting through double screens and holds. Especially if there's a Bradly type defensive player on the court, applying solid pressure on the passer.
Melo also has an injured shoulder, so he doesn't want somebody yanking on it again, trying to break free from all the holding players do on defense. When Melo is healthy, he knows how to protect the ball more. Thats why he wears thos elbow pads. Their like chicken wings for his offense and defensive swipes. But as you can see, he did not want to take that contact from Bradly with that injured left shoulder.
I've said this before, but it may have been over looked. You can't have too many iso type players on the floor at the same time. Melo's isoball freezes everybody else out. Add in JR, who is out there watching our leader do exactly what coach told JR not to do.....It's like telling an alcoholic to stop drinking, but surround him with other alcoholics.
This is why I don't like JR and Melo starting. I rather have more willing passers and shooters and defenders around Melo, with JR off the bench to keep that 1 iso player on the floor at all times for last second shot clock fadeaways. Otherwise, both iso players on the floor together is a double freeze on the other 3 players, and kills team chemistry when they are on or off.
This is also why Amari doesn't fit in.....When Amari is freezed out from Melo, he's either going to have turnovers or brick shots or try to forced some kind of iso play himself, just so he can get some shine. Add since his defense is non existent with his own man, similar to Chander's overrated defense, all Amari is his offense to show his wealth. Both guys are average help defenders and terrible man to man defenders, but thats for another topic. For example, do you think Kenyon Martin would allow little Bradly to get that shot off under the basket in crunch time?
Woody is the most important piece to us winning it all. This is why I like Phil Jackson type coach, because he has the nuts and respect to sit Melo and / or JR during those iso plays. Woodson stays with JR way too long during games. Same with Kidd. He sticks with his favorites, instead of using logic, like putting Shump and Pablo back in the game, since they helped give you that big lead....Remember, Shump went on a roll, with Melo on the bench. As soon as he put Melo back in the game, the lead was gone! Melo and JR killed the chemistry by taking too many jumpers, that wasn't falling, while freezing out the other players that were playing great!
