Lets see how Cope handles the playoffs. Better time to determine his value.

LOL, JR Smith is only making $2.8 mill. How in the world is Copeland worth more than him? I like the dude, he has a nice offensive game and all, but he's a 8th or 9th man at best.

Because JRs salary is inline with what it should be?

Not understanding what you're getting at. Joe Johnson is having a worse season than JR Smith and he's making $20 million this year. Even if you're factoring JR's half season last year with the Knicks, as well as, most of his career, he puts up Jason Terry type numbers who's making $5million/season.

I think he meant is "not" in line but left the word not out.

The question was a sarcastic one....but you did end up understanding that JRs salary is nothing that you should be comparing to.

I think its about right and fair. even thought Copeland is 29 he appears to be a very young 29 and I can see him improve y-y. I think hes earned some security as a high quality bench player who can play 5-4-3 and has the ability to drop 20 on youwith his unique inside outside game. 2-2.5mm per is a very fair price especially where we are cap wise. I do NOT think we will be bale to resign JR Smith unless je is willing to take less--combine them and youre talking 25-27 points and half your bench. Both players should continue to improve as well. With JR the scary part is a comp if they take the 2nd half of the season---if one team believes he can keep that up and has 10+mm to spend--there is 0 chance of him coming back.

The Knicks have early bird rights on JR Smith after the season. I can see him getting $10m/yr x 4. He's a late bloomer with upside.

I'm not certain what Copeland's status is - we can can give him a qualifying offer - but by virtue of that, he'll be an RFA. I just don't know whether that means we can go over the cap to get him back.

Not really worried about it now, but next year we should be sporting a pretty different bench - I can't imagine they'll bring back all 3 of Rasheed/KT40/Martin. I'd like to think we'll take a flyer out on a young big.

I think Knicks can only offer JR ~$5M next year.

Hopefully 5 mil and a contract for Chris Smith keeps JR in NY.

Hopefully. But it seems realistic that another team could offer twice as much money as us plus a starting job; that would be a lot to turn down.

I think the JR leaving stuff is too overblown when I don't see who is going to blow him away with a 10 million dollar contract other than the Knicks who will have his MAX bird rights in a year. I think JR has shown to be loyal to the Knicks in the past and he loves it here.

they have his "early bird rights, a starting salary of a bit over 5m a year"

not

"full bird rights anything they wanted to give to keep JR"

We also have to find a way to keep Martin as well

As for Copeland, he is expendable for but is a very cheap option as a stretch 4 and probably better at 5
I think he is worth 2-3m for that rare skill set as a stretch 4/5
Not sure if Copeland would get this opportunity to play the 5 without the injuries to Martin/Amare/Kurt Thomas/Wallace and will he continue to get these opportunities here for the play offs once those vets are eligible to return

If we can keep all 3 players and use the Mini MLE to sign a PG or G/F like

Korver/Delfino/Dunleavy/Webster

to go with some good vet min steals, we will continue to be contenders
Brandon Wright is another solid PF/C but likely would be for at least the Mini MLE as well...

Like other rookies who have surprised some teams, they're going to game plan for Copeland in the playoffs. If Cope responds he's going to get a nice contract somewhere.

if he responds in playoffs he could be looking at 3.5- under 5m a year
As of now, I think he has shown enough as a 2-3m per year

Earl Smith likes playing for the first pro coach he has ever felt a bond with.
