They can't amnesty him but they can use the stretch provision that some were suggesting the Knicks use for year 3 of Lin's contract to get out from the poison pill.

Melo started the year playing slightly differently than he usually does- his defensive intensity was way up (remember him crashing into the crowds on many occasions, chasing after steals and loose balls?), and he was passing a bit more- he even played as a decoy in the Spurs game. But then, as is natural, he reverted back to the way he has always played- I remember a writer for another team saying he watched a Knicks game a few weeks ago and saying it looked like exactly the same Melo to him.

If he can re-tune his game again back to what it was at the start of the season, hopefully things will improve.

He wouldve kept amares minutes down--hes playing much much better than wallce or camby. Somehow if JR Smith realized just how much talent he has--he would be an all star 2 guard if he played smart.
Used it to get Tyson.

You kidding right?? I don't know why people dont get this, but we used our Amnesty on Chaucey Billups' expiring contract. I posted heavily during hat time that we should have used it on amare since it was the ONLY way we could have gotten out of his cintract counting towards our cap. Or at least we should have held on to it as insurnace against his contract for situations exactly like this one. That was the biggest piece of mismanagement by the Knicks since signing Eddy Curry. You ONLY get the AMNESTY once and we wasted it. I understand that hey wanted Tyson, but I would be willing to bet amnestying Amare right then and there would have made things much easier.

They can stretch out his salary over a number of years so that the cap hit isn't as bad. It might just be the final year of his contract and they would have to cut him if I understand it correctly.

You pay him his full contracted amount but stretch it over an extra year, so he has two years left @ 40MM, you pay him 40MM over three years and your cap hold decreases from 20MM per year to 13.3MM per year. I think tyat's the premise, but amare has to agree to it.

Are the knicks savy and foresighted enough to take advantage of this? Would be great. You can add a nice piece for 7.3$mil

I wouldn't say it affects nothing. Stat was turning into a real low post threat, we don't have too many of those right now. I do agree that it doesn't mean the season is over. We just have to get the rest of the squad to step up.

Agreed and I think things all went downhill when our miraculous 3pt shooting fell apart. Melo was probably told to go back to ISO but just a guess.

I may be wrong but that only applies to teams under the cap. So no soup for the Knicks

I think they can use it. Coon brought up the Knicks resigning Lin and then waiving him before year three and stretching his salary out.

If the Knicks were smart they should have picked up Hickson when he was cut a year ago and was there for the taking.

If I was the knicks I would shut STAT down and send him to Germany to get the treatment Kobe got if it applies. Then have him train with K-mart, although it could be Kmart is related to Logan Howlett(wolverine).

Not sure if the treatment would work. I know Jeffries chose the Kobe treatment over Micro fracture surgery. Not sure if works after you have had it.

We couldn't- Blazers got priority when it came to picking him up off waivers due to their record at the time, I think. Shame, we could really have used him.

Hey briggs or anyone else..what does "amnestying" someone mean? And how does that effect the salary cap? I remember chauncey was amnestied and we used that money to get tyson
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

Good point. Knicks are 5-5 without and Melo and 33-17 with him....

And Tyson has more win shares and a better ws percentage than anyone else on the team. We're really a better team without him, too. We should dump both of them now, while their value is high. Give me draft picks and cap space, or give me death!

I finally see the light!
