JR Smith should just try to penetrate more often, right when he catches the ball, take it right in and if he does not think he can finish then look for the open man.
He has to stop with the dribble, 1v1 moves, that will end up with less time on the shot clock to work with, and low % shots.
It is a bad habit of his, to try to penetrate then pull back after dribbling out 6 seconds of doing NOTHING, then he relies on the off balanced step back, off the dribble, pull up to bail him out. When there is no time, I don't mind him using this move, but to use consistently because he knows he can get his shot off is a bad habit.
Outside of Felton and without Melo at PF, he is the only other play that has the ability to penetrate.
Players such ass Kidd, Novak, Brewer, Pablo, Wallace, Chandler, Thomas, and Camby can all play off penetration as they are small/high IQ players.
Regardless, he is the 2nd best player that has the ability to penetrate off the dribble, at least till Shump gets in shape.
Good things happen when you penetrate to the paint...
1) either easy basket with layup/dunk
or
MISS the shot BUT
--------------------
A) miss and could get 2 shots
B) get offensive rebound for possible easy put back, especially Chandler/Wallace/Melo/Thomas/hopefully Camby soon
2) breaking down opponents defense and earning a step or good look/Wide open shot for a team mate
For players like Kidd, Novak, Pablo, Wallace, Chandler, Brewer, and Kurt Thomas, it would be great if JR can bring it good penetration consistently.
It was one of the things that he did well, early in the first few games.
It just opens up the game for him and everyone around him, only a few players in the whole squad has this ability, and he has to acknowledge this.
He doesn't even need to get the assist, as we often have 4 shooters to spread the floor, and he could get the "hockey assist"
