Why do we have a winning culture? How are we closing out games? What are some of the new strengths of our Knicks team?
Great ball movement (passing).
Defense.
Low turnovers (important for our possessions because we haven't been that great in the rebounding category).
Unfortunately for Amare, HE EXCELS AT NONE OF THESE QUALITIES.
He is not known to be a good passer. Rather, he has tendencies to be the "black hole", where you pass him the ball and you won't see it coming back. He wants to shoot and score.
Defense??? No. Just, no. Getting one block means jack if you're consistently letting your man blow by you or losing players on the backdoor cuts. He's such a liability on defense.
He also turns the ball over a lot. Bobbles passes. Loses his dribble.
I honestly don't know where Amare fits into this team and its new identity. We have a top 5 offensive player in the league (Melo), a Sixth Man of the Year candidate in JR who also provides offensive firepower, RayRay has been returning to borderline All-Star playmaking, and we have 3-pt shooters in Kidd, Novak, and heck even Brewer. Yes, Amare can add some offensive talents to our team but I'm praying the coaching staff does not lose sight of why we have been doing so well. Defense. Defense. It's all about defense.
In my opinion (since I doubt he's tradeable), we have to delicately handle Amare's ego and convince him that by announcing he'll gladly come off the bench, it will do wonders for his image, as opposed to insisting he is a starter in the NBA and consequently seeing the Knicks return to the Knicks of old. 20-25 min off the bench please.
