It appears Madison Square Garden’s transformation doesn’t apply to just its bricks and mortar.

MSG president Scott O’Neil, a rising star who left the NBA in July of 2008 to take the Garden post, is stepping down next week after four years with the organization. It is unclear what led to O’Neil’s abrupt departure, which was first reported on the Daily News website Wednesday afternoon, but according to a source, O’Neil has been at odds with Garden Chairman James Dolan.

Others insist O’Neil’s goals are different from running the World’s Most Famous Arena. According to sources, O’Neil always has had aspirations of becoming NBA commissioner, a job the league’s deputy commish and COO Adam Silver is expected to fill once David Stern steps down.

O’Neil worked for the NBA as senior vice president before leaving for MSG.

Both O’Neil and the Garden released carefully worded statements Wednesday officially announcing his resignation. But of course there was no mention of the outgoing president being at odds with Dolan, who has been known to shout at O’Neil in front of others in meetings, according to sources.

“My time at The World’s Most Famous Arena has been nothing short of incredible and I am proud of our results,” O’Neil said in a statement. “I am thankful and extremely proud of what we accomplished at MSG Sports. There is nothing more rewarding than the opportunity to help build a world-class staff and seeing them perform beyond our loftiest expectations — people I consider not only the most talented in the business, but also true friends. To help lead and steward iconic brands like the Knicks and Rangers and sell the transformed Garden in a city like New York has been a true privilege. I could not be more excited about the process of discovering what lies ahead.”

The Madison Square Garden Company statement read: “We are grateful for Scott’s years of service and his many contributions to the company, and wish him the very best of luck as he moves forward. We are fortunate to have a talented team in place at MSG Sports who will continue to build on the company’s successes while we undertake a search for a new President of MSG Sports.”

O’Neil, a young, brash executive whose confidence can border on arrogance, played an active role with the Knicks and Rangers.

In the summer of 2010, he became more involved with Knicks personnel moves dating back to the free-agent recruitment of LeBron James and the eventual blockbuster trade in February of 2011 that landed Carmelo Anthony. O’Neil also was a strong supporter of ex-Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, who resigned in March with the team struggling and Dolan demonstrating little desire to retain the coach after his contract expired.

O’Neil is calling his move a resignation, but according to sources, this could very well be Dolan’s way of forcing out a personality the organization considers a potential leak — an approachable businessman who does not instinctively fear and loathe the press.

not sure what point your trying to get across??? Agree/Disagree/Ambivalent, which is it?

If you look at my original post it was really neutral and newsworthy. I thought it interesting that your repsonse was almost in defense of MSG/Dolan referring to "whispers".

To that my agenda then swings negative as not to turn anyone away from the team via "Hate" but to better understand that when the orgnaization head is rotting, the rest will follow suit. This does not mean the team will fail entirely but since Dolan ran Checketts out the door the team had a good run in 1999 and has been inconsistant ever since.

Dolan runs the place badly.

Most of you are correct to assume I am hedging my bets with the N*ts. I am reading about them and "following" them. That might be the first step to becoming a fan. I don't really know.

I don't "Love" my teams like I did as a kid. These are paid professional entertainers who put a product on the floor for our entertainment and profit. I can't turn my back on them as its been a life time passion which is why Im here.

We got two years I think with this club. Its a short window. I hope they get it done!

I would think many here would be happy this guy is leaving as he brokered the Starphuck Melo deal.

It's not like he was fired for starphucking or Dolan indicated that this marks an end to the starphucking.

It would appear the guy follows the plan according to the owner.

Dolan hates "leaks"!

It would be nice if the team didn't have anyting to leak that makes them look stupid.

The whole CAA thing is a bit bizzare.

One has to figure CP3 into the equation some how. There has to be reason we let Lin go.

SOME excerpts from the NY post, just goes to show dolan doesn't have a clue... lets wake up folks, the NY nets in our backyard is a real threat, and it is a good thing. Hopefully it forces this franchise to operate in a profession and responsible manner... letting lin go was a mistake, from many perspectives, marketing , community, and most of all on the court....

O’Neil oversaw the Knicks’ and Rangers’ marketing and season-ticket operation and the move comes just 1½ months after the Knicks’ prized marketing cash cow, Lin, was allowed to sign with the Rockets when owner James Dolan and

the Knicks failed to match Houston’s offer sheet.
Sources said O’Neil opposed the decision to let Lin leave. O'Neil's departure could prove to be a major marketing loss as the Knicks brace for the onslaught of the Nets in Brooklyn.

“These ads will provide exceptional branding for Coke and be an open for business sign for MSG that will be seen around the world,’’ O’Neil told The Post at the time. “We continue to be amazed and appreciate the response that Jeremy and the Knicks receive from fans around the country during our games and globally across our digital platforms and TV.’

NAH, my response wasn't meant to be pro or ani-Dolan. I was just adding what seemed like new info to this thread. I mentioned Dolan being an easy target because, he is. Who doesn't dislike the guy so, it's easy to assume it was because of Dolan. Don't know which if either is true.....heck, both could be true. He could Hate Dolan and have an opportunity for a better position.

Wow, TK, you are consistently shocking me with your posts lately. When I first joined, you were like the most positive superfan (unless I'm mistaking you for another TK). Sad to see you so pissed off with the Knicks.

You do know we (at least I) watch the games not for management but, to support the guys who put on the blue and orange. I like the guys we have and expect big things this season. Why focus so much venom on a guy not who isn't worth the effort.

So Dolan makes woodson publically look stupid when Woodson assumed Lin was to be resigned and now we get "reports" this dude who is highly respected bolts after he negotiated some good deals for MSG and Knicks and Dolan yells at him. Not saying anyone is above being yelled at but with all we have read about Dolan and his tirades which drive his decisions it becomes discouraging.

He drives solid people away and yet publically hung onto Isiah and tried to bring him back.

I'm going to focus on the future and the players who I am excited to watch this coming season. Dolan isn't worthy of my ire.....I have bigger things in my life to focus on. I know this is a message board for opinions and such, I just don't want to focus on anything negative anymore.

I have noticed myself becoming more negative than is typical so, I need to get a grip. I can only hope you feel me on this, whether you feel the same or not.

You right, we should focus on the positive but as a long damaged knick fan its not easy. The games will be played in due time and all the good, bad and the ugly will be revealed.

I suppose O'neil leaving is not big deal but its a reminder to the dysfunction process that let Lin slip away. Dolan fiscal history and the rumor he "felt betrayed" by lin and had a hissy fit make for another chapter in his legend.

It was water under the bridge until we see another casualty floating by. Fans should not be concerned about managment changes but these are the guys that either set the agenda or fill the one set by Dolan.

The reference to the CAA conspiracy is interesting and one I don't fully understand. I see how CAA gets its clients paid but are we to assume we derive some benefit also?

The CAA thing is interesting and now that you bring it up, I wouldn't mind knowing how they get paid as well. Back to O'Neil, to be honest, I don't think I'd ever heard of this guy before the end of last season. I Thought those Duties were split between Alan, Grunni and one or two other guys.

yea, it was me, I was overly positive.. LOL.. i have had enough man.. the isiah era took me through a lot and once we got walsh, I just knew the mess at MSG was going to be cleaned up.. we were headed that way, but dolan could not help himself..

true we don't watch the game for management, but we watch the players they put on the floor, and when you don't trust management, I am not sure how much you can trust the players... especially ones they compromise the team to jump into bed with...

I readit and the other parts earlier In the summer. Nalod tends to be provocative in his posts especially since the nets went to Brooklyn. There is nothing Caa related to o'neil's departure and if he takes a Job in the league office he is just following a career path.

Negativity spreads like a disease throughout organizations, households and even Internet forums. What is curious however is that you openly admit your growing affinity for the Nets, yet are one here all the time with hundreds, if not thousands of posts, bitching, obsessing and analyzing Dolan's every move. Your like the guy who's girlfriend broke up with him, yet he follows her around and still talks about her all the time to his friends. Let it if go if you need to. You obviously feel the grass is greener in other organizations. There is nothing wrong with rooting for the Nets, but if you are doing this, why come here and continually bitch and moans and spread hate?

I'm guessing most people here are long time Knicks fans, same as you. Me, since 1973. You claim that you can not turn your back on the Knicks based on all your time vested. We've all vested significant time/emotion. By hedging your bets with a team like the Nets, you essentially have turned your back on the Knicks....and it appears that your hatred for Dolan is stronger than your love of the team at this point.

but I can't blame nalod, like you guys, I have been a fan since the 70's, well late 70's as a little kid... I have been a fan, and I can't turn my back on the team, but I surely have tapered my interest and excitement a bit until changes are made.. both on and off the court.. i give this team two years in which I hope guys like melo and JR are gone from this team and hopefully dolan is forced by the competition from the team in brooklyn to either do right or get rolled over... that is our only hope.. yes our hope is that the nets really start to dent his pockets, maybe that will spurn real change. get real basketball men in here like we had in walsh and real leaders on the court, unlike we have now....

I won't be switching the the nets, but I will be paying a lot of attention to teams like denver and the rockets, and atlanta since I live here.... as of this point, the knicks haven't been fun to watch....

Im not sure the knicks are really into "winning" as much as being run as a company. Guys like Cuban have made it a passion to win and of course make money.

I can't turn my back on them as its been a life time passion which is why Im here.

We got two years I think with this club. Its a short window. I hope they get it done!

Same sentiment here. I will be more of a fan of basketball. There are a lot of interesting developments around the league that will keep my occupied for most of the season:
- Allen at Miami
- Nash and D12 with Lakers
- Kyle's progress at Cavs
- Davis at NOH
- Roy & Lilliard at Portland
- Denver's core players of McGee, Lawson, Faried, and new addition of Igoudala
- Westbrook, Durant, Harden, and Ibaka of Thunders
- Lin and their young roster of 3 first round picks at Houston

As you may notice, most my interests are from WC. I will still be a fan of Knicks but not as passionate as before, and will always remain a hater of Celtics and Heat.

Could it be that Isiah will be filling that position. Truely a sad day if that were to happen after all Isiah and Dolan have had a meeting.
