I don't feel bad for advertisers who are trying to find new ways of getting eyeball attention, they have over saturated the market and people have started tuning them out (see DVR's, adblockers in browsers, etc.) and now they want to throw something on a jersey. I also don't feel bad for the owners, they make a ton of money off the game and the players.

I think its a bad idea, and I am sure nobody will stop it.

Completely agree.

I personally don't understand the "sacred" argument. Sports teams and leagues are there for one reason: providing entertainment as a way of making money. Obviously there are some example sports franchises that sometimes put winning as a priority from year-to-year, but the underlying motive for these teams is to make money.

Let me make up an example: If McDonals came to you and offered you $100K/year to wear a tie to work that had a very small, unobtrusive logo at the bottom, would you do it for your family? Please let me know if you would not do it for the sake of keeping your life and family name sacred.

Yeah just what we need MORE ADS! I mean we don't have enough adverts in almost every part of society already. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Uniforms. Keep them clean. 40 years of watching the NBA it's hard for me to accept ads on the Unis. Perhaps if they're tone on tone where you don't see a full color patch like Nascar. What happened to the purist crowd. I barely liked seeing the Nike Swoosh or Adidas Stripes on Unis.

Sources say that the ads are necessary in order to execute a secret under-the-table payment to the rockets to cover Jeremy Lin's third year.

I was thinking more along the lines of cool Tsingtao logo to take advantage of Lin's marketing influence. Has the NBA listed what products are eligible for the uniform logos?

Some recent coverage of this issue from the Uni Watch crew, who oppose ads on uniforms:

http://www.uni-watch.com/2012/07/21/letting-the-nba-know-jersey-ads-suck/
http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/6970/fans-dislike-nbas-uniform-advertising-plan

I agree with nixy. The patch seems like a slippery slope down the road towards the English Barclays Premier League. We have mascots, dance teams, cheerleaders, stunt groups, pop music instead of organ players, ads zipping around arenas on state-of-the-art screens placed everywhere, and everything in the broadcast is sponsored.

It's not something that in-and-of-itself would turn me from the game, but it's a bush league move.

That's not really an apples to apples comparison but I get what you are saying. In the case of the NBA its the league and the owners pushing for the ads, I haven't heard of the players asking for them as well but I could be wrong. Second, who is getting paid? The players? The owners? The league? All three?

Second, if I wear a tie to work I am not subjecting the general public who have already paid for a ticket and been bombarded by advertising on the way through the door. I am subjecting my co-workers to it.

That being said, if McDonald's wanted to pay me $100k to wear a tie I would definitely wear it - these are tough times and I could use an extra $100k.

you are right, it isn't apples to apples but the bottom line is the NBA as a whole is getting more money, and I am sure any individual under the same "getting more money" circumstance would not turn this type of opportunity down either. I haven't seen anyone who complained about the jersey's being sacred also tell me that they would turn down McDonalds offer.

I would think that these jersey ad placement falls under the same category as TV deals: the owners/NBA gets the money and that in turn provides for a bigger salary cap situation which the players could enjoy.
