This signing is exactly what we needed.

And the guy basically gave up a million or more to come back.

I'm officially a fan.

Im happy were getting jr back for only 2.8 mil

Should we and can we sign another SG?

Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

In a way he is our wild card if he can calm it down a bit.

Im sure he'll get a longer deal with us and I would imagine he has some verbal agreements with us.

We asked him to carry the offense last year at times. He was going to go wild.

Great athlete and very important given we have no draft picks for the next 20 years.

Totally agree. The guy is only 26. Good spot up shooter, able to handle the ball, streaky shooter with unlimited range, and plays good defense. Of course if he wasn't wild we wouldn't be able to afford him.

+1 -- especially the fact that Novak's contract is slightly deranged in comparison.

The wildest JR story we have lately? 2AM Bike ride in Manhattan. I believe the calming down has already happened. Possibly China can do that to a person.

Also asked him to facilitate when Lin went down, which is not his role.

We have options, lots of options on O.

I like it.

Excellent signing. Main issue with JR is he doesn't seem to understand his role. He plays like he thinks he is the man. Even on the second team, he's not. Don't know if this is his fault or coach's or both, but I've got to figure it gets better with a full training camp and a full season. He's got a lot of talent and athleticism, we all can agree. Rein it in just a bit, and he's a very valuable player.

We should be applauding JR. He is taking way less money to stay in NY. He shot 35% from three in a bad year. What is really exciting is that he can now become a a catch and shoot guy.

Great signing.

Anyone who doesnt think this move is an A+ is smoking the rock. A SG entering his prime for 2.8 million, Landry Fields got 3 years 20 mil, give me a break.Guy would of got double what he got from the Knicks easy. Guy is 26 many of u act like he cant get better. Knicks are very fortunate to have stolen JR Rider because they have no buisness having him on the roster

All Knick contracts should be as good for the club as this one.

the concern is that he becomes JR Rider
For the money its great. I would have to see a lot more before I could be happy giving him a long contract. He played very hard last year but he's a tool and for every good night there are 2 nights where he shoots 3-15

Still.. we needed him back and he will be playing his ass off again under the 1 year deal

i agree
all good pts
but JR Smith cannot be starter for NBA team

We'll have to deal with that, he most suited off the bench middle quarters and last qtr. end of game

Love the signing and Smith has actually become a fan favorite here, so its amazing we can keep him.

Now, after watching some of his highlights, its pretty evident we need a starting shooting guard even if the guy will play less than J.R.

Smith is a deadly weapon to have on the bench and he immediately gives us energy and excitement. Its important to keep him there, on the bench. So we need to get another SG pretty soon, unless the team thinks White can be that, which I HIGHLY doubt it.

He's familiar with the system, and we need someone to warm the seat until Shumpert's back. I'm okay with the signing, it's only $2.8 mill.

I wanna say Lin/Kidd will help JR get more open looks and hit them but he is a streaky volume shooter. Open or not unless he is working hard this offseason on becoming a consistent shooter. The JR from last year can't start with Melo & Amare. There's not enough balls to go around for those 2 alone. I like JR off the bench and at $2.8m a real steal! And Woodson gets through to him better than anyone and he likes wearing the blue & orange. Hopefully we can now complete the roster by adding a SG who can definitely shoot to start for a few months

You need to go check his stats over the years on catch and shoot, spot ups, or hand offs. He shoots Novak type numbers. On top of that he is one of the better cutting wing players in the league. Yes he shoots to many step backs but put him in a role like Rip and you have a beast. He doesn't need the ball in his hand now trying to initiate the offense which will help him.

I like JR Smith, he had a poor series vs Heat but he is an ideal 6th man.
They were open shots that he missed, regardless of them going in or not, he has to take those shots if he is open.
He was once known as a knuckle head and not moving the basketball, but he actually has changed.
We can't blame him for NOT having a PG or another player that can help create/facilitate.
That isn't his job and it was vs one an elite defense.
With Lin, Kidd, and Iman returning, he could return to being a scorer with good looks, and 2nd/3rd ball handler.

I don't know if Chris Smith, his younger brother, is going to get a contract to make up for JR Smith's choice to stay.
He is worth much more than his 2.8m, I liked watching JR and Iman together, we get another year to evaluate Smith.
I think he is worth 5-6m from his market value, watching what other players are getting. I hope he gets a 3 or 4 year extension if he does well.

Agreed. Once Lin went down, and we had the walking dead initiating(BD and Bibby), Woodson was forced to have JR orchestrate some of the offense which led to some of the ugly ISO step backs. When JR's not thinking and just reacting(catch and shoot), he's very effective.

J.R. Smith @ $2.8M is great for us. I can see him stepping up his game by being more focused this year.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I was on board with J.R. coming back as long as the contract wasn't too generous. Looks like that's what happened. I'm hoping that Kidd being on the team will help Smith play smarter. Doesn't have the PG carousel to deal with.

This is fine I guess. Is it 2.8 per year or 2.8 for 2 years (i.e. 1.4 each?). I'm pretty sure its the former but that was unclear to me. Either way, hate the player, fine with the contract. He better get more smarter out there.
