What's the general opinion of Shumpert's potential, assuming he returns from his injury at full strength?
Future All-Star and All-NBA Defender
All-NBA defender who lacks offensive game to be consistent all-star candidate
Solid role player/starter/top team defender
6th/7th man

I think he would definitely have been an nba star. But I agree, we have to see how he reacts to this injury to know for sure.

The thing with this is 2 fold. Yes, it could rob him of his athleticism but I am more concerned about him being afraid of contact now because he may start to favor the knee. A big part of what made him good was his fearlessness.

its all legit concerns, he went down really hard.
I am not saying he can't recover, but it at least set his development time by about 1-2 years.
Instead of practicing and continue developing his game, he now has a few stages before he can continue where he left off

1) recovery
2) get back in shape
3) continue to develop his game

Not being able to practice and continue to develop his game
You don't want him to rush his recovery and re-injure himself again but we won't know, till another 2years or so.
if he would lose athleticism, speed/quickness, and the how it will affect the mental part of his game...

The injury is definitely a serious thing, I know for instance Rose may not play at all next season, and it would wise for them not to risk him.

Shumpert may be viewed in the same way to an extent, and there is no way to tell how he will regain form.

Had he not gotten injured I can see making the all-star at least once.

scary thing is Iman look like he went down much harder.
We all know he is one tough cookie and he looked like he was crying as he was carried off by Jorts and Jordan, unable to walk...

At least Rose was walking in a couple days and he didn't look as bad.
I wish both of them well.

I think Shumpert could squeeze his way on to a an all-star team at some point in his career. But what's really working against him is that he now has had surgery on both knees. (it's not oft mentioned that he had surgery on his right meniscus in college)

The magic of his defense is really his quick hands, and I'd expect that to be intact. I'm worried his career will follow the Tony Allen arc vs the Michael Finley arc. Allen has really turned it on over the past 2 or so seasons (All NBA defensive 1st teamer this year!), but he's not really a consistent enough offensive threat on the Grizzlies to really be an all-star candidate.

Unless the Knicks start out extremely hot and they get a lot of fan votes (the way basically every Laker starter used to get voted in... or every Chicago Bulls player got voted in...), it'll be hard for him to get traction. Coaches would have a hard time voting in a 4th or 5th option on offense, right?
