Phil will make us fit and he was an excellent defensive coach and player.

I didnt watch the bulls but just from watching the lakers their pick and roll defense was pretty bad at times and their team didn't rotate defensively. Some people blame Gasol but somehow Mike Brown has got him to play much better defense.

I prefer to stay with Woodson.

If somehow Phil Jackson emerges as some kind of inevitability then I hope the Knicks ask him for a medical clearance first.
The guy is getting wayyy up there in age and the last thing I want is someone padding their Social Security before retirement on the Knicks Dime without any results on the court.

I think a great coach does not yield to his players nor deviates from his "System". I think mike was ambitious perhaps to a fault in thinking he could meld his team to greatness. He "failed". Plain and simple.

Lets talk about PHil Jax as a Knick coach. It requires the installation of a "system". A methodical discipline called the "triange offense".

Phil has 11 rings with it and made Kobe and Jordan into amazing legends.
HIs juice card is full of cred.

Can he come in and get Amare and Melo to buy in?

IN the absence of PJax, I would advocate Woodson gets a three year extension.

The only way it works is if you bring in Amare, Tyson and Melo in on the decision and they back whom ever.

I'm sorry but that's completely wrong. Pat Riley went from the Showtime Lakers to the Ewing Knicks to Alonzo's Heat and then Wade's Heat. Phil Jackson's offense was one way with MJ, was changed when he retired, was changed again when he went to LA with Shaq and Kobe, and changed again when Shaq was traded. Gregg Poppovich is running a completely different offense now then when he first got there in 1996. Larry Brown went from the Spurs to the Clippers to the Pacers to the 76ers to the Pistons changing at every stop. Great coaches coach to the strengths of their teams they don't try to fit square pegs into round holes.

Great post. I agree. No need to spin it.

I don't want Phil Jackson at this point. MSG is back to their old ways of censoring the coaches and staff. I rather not deal with Phil Jackson and management feuding.

Mike Woodson is low maintenance and seems competent so far.

Dolan is loyal to most of his people. If Woodson is doing well, he will stay.

And he, GG, and Isiah are a trio so I don't think they would allow it.

Teams win championships when they have championship talent and a capable coach. This is how Carlisle won. He's no less of a coach this year than he was last. His roster isn't exactly the same tho. Is Spoelstra a better coach than Woody just cuz he's been to the Finals? We don't NEED PJax. We need to keep perfecting the roster so that the pieces fit better. Woody could win a title just as much as Doc, Pop or PJax if you give him the weapons. Woody may not have lost a game if he had all the parts in working order. Baron, Bibby, & TD isn't exactly a murderer's row of PG's. He's had shaky SG's too. You can't get more up and down than JR, Shump and Fields. Woody is hungry so I would lean towards the guy that is ready to gnaw on a chain to get to a title.

I agree 100% but Dantoni wasn't a rebuilding coach either, it just isn't the way the Knicks and Dolan thinks and runs things...

Unless Woodson and the Knicks make some noise this year in the playoffs and they make it to a 2nd round game 7 exit at the very least....
We would probably need to make the Eastern Conference Finals appearance....
Unfortunately I just can't see this squad making it with all these injuries.

On the plus side, Amare looked really great last game.
Fields looked like H20 gave some lessons on shooting. If he actually shows he can hit the 3point shot during this stretch, some team can outbid us for his value...
Melo excelled at PF.

However, defense was weak, without our defensive leader in Tyson Chandler.
Our 2nd defensive anchor, JJ, is questionable for us as well.

Amare, Melo, and TC cannot coexist together, I don't want Woodson trying to make it work while its evident they dont...
TC is our best option at center, while Amare cannot do the same things on the court with TC taking up room.
Melo is our best option at PF, with Amare being our 2nd unit. Teams will continue to dare Amare to shoot and not allow Melo to penetrate/post up consistently with those 2 together on the floor.

Novak isn't a stretch 4, isn't athletic or long, defensive as Wilson Chandler or Shawne Williams.
We need to add many a couple of pieces to this current squad. We need to add a MLE worthy player to our squad while retaining majority of team.
But we are on the verge of losing our "role players" and if we don't add this MLE type player, I don't see us being true contenders.
Amare looked great yesterday, I wonder if he continues this, what kind of value can we get with him in the summer.
Having 2 players making that max contracts is just very hard to build around when they have flaws and aren't the ALL STARS

Lebron
Durant
Rose
Westbrook

etc...

Most importantly, they don't fit together, ATM just cost too much together and aren't efficient together...

Woody stays. There is no taking away PJ's successes and rings but let us not forget he did it each time with arguably the best player of his generation (and throw in the best center of his generation). I loved Phil as as a player and respect his accomplishments but this is a new generation, a new era and (as someone closer to Phil's age than most) he has nothing left to prove and I question whether he wants the headaches that go along with the city and NYK organization despite the desire to come to his basketball beginnings.

Woody has earned his opportunity and I cannot believe that even Charlie's son is blind to this. He had limited success in Atlanta but many if not most coaches are not successful in their initial HC jobs. he has adjusted to an injury depleted squad, changed philosophies, and seems to have the ears and understands the psyches of the current crop of players. Woody stays.

Neither Jordan or Kobe were considered the best before Phil was their coach. They were considered the best of their generation AFTER.

It would be interesting to see if he could guide Melo as well.

Woodson has certainly earned every consideration.

Don't worry, we don't yield any power. Dolan might be thrilled with Woodson and PJax might not even be an option available.

That's a great point Nalod.

While they were both considered all-world talents, they were at the iconic levels nor did they win without PJax. People just hate give him credit because of his giant ego.

Anyway, Woody is going nowhere - even if he gets swept. He is the perfect soldier and an Indiana alum.

All that winning and acting like he was smarter and better than anyone else really rubbed people the wrong way.

He was all those things and he had a swag to him.

Yeah - he used to go at it with JVG since JVG does not like being bullied. Loved when he called him Big Chief Triangle. He was and is a bit of a prick but like you said, as long as you win, no one cares. Well at least aside from the fans of the team(s) he is coaching/coached.

People also forget the job that he did without Jordan when he was out. The horrible Hugh Hollins call that lost them a trip the the Finals. And they were favored to win the Finals. And, how Kobe and team failed miserably without him with Rudy and the Interim's.

I always respected JVG fight for his team.

Holding on the Mournings leg was epic.

Telling his players to not be friendly to Jordan on the court, and verbally going after Phil Jax to gain any advantage. JVG thought his players might rally around him just a bit more if he did that.

He tried a few tactics even about Jax whining about ref calls.

Listen Mike Woodson is a very nice coach, he's done good work here, but this isn't Larry Brown. This is Phil Jackson, one of the the top 5 coaches in the history of the NBA. He pushed Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, Kobe to their limits. That's not easy to do, granted he had the best talent, but when he speaks players listen. Woodson hasn't been to a conference finals, Phil has 10 titles.

We are all in with Melo for a few short years and if this is ever going to work he needs to push him to the player averages 30pts 8rbs 4ass not the disengaged wannabe superstar we see half the season.

funny... I was going to say whoever Melo plays hard for.

You cant expect to win or compete for a title always being a low seed. You need home court and easier first round matchups.

You dont get homecourt when your best player(s) dont bring it every night, so whatever keeps the chemistry cool is good with me. Woodson is fine with me. Just like the last 5 guys. Its the players.
