Knicks give Walsh permission to speak to other teams

NEW YORK -- Donnie Walsh, who rebuilt the Knicks' roster and battered image before stepping aside as team president last June, has received permission from the organization to speak with other teams about an executive position, his agent told CBSSports.com Friday.

Walsh, 71, has a contract with the Knicks in his role as consultant that expires June 30. The widely respected executive wants to work again and is expected to begin exploring opportunities immediately.

"Donnie's very interested in continuing to work on a full-time basis," Walsh's agent, Steve Kauffman, told CBSSports.com.

The Portland Trail Blazers already have begun yet another GM search, and it is believed that Walsh will explore that situation first since the job is known to be open. If Larry Bird steps down as Pacers president after the season, there are indications that owner Herb Simon -- a longtime friend and proponent of Walsh -- would strongly consider a reunion.

Kudos to @KBergCBS on the Donnie Walsh story. And proves what we all reported last June: Donnie wasn't ready to retire. He was fed up.

Timing is hilarious. Isiah will be consulting the Knicks. Get over it.

Dude is a bad GM but a solid judge of talent.

Yup yup yup. I was right all this time. I don't understand why my friends argue with me on the things I kept reiterating. Hopefully this forum has lots of intelligent adults that at least will make good arguments against my theory.

1. Jim Dolan is in closet with Isiah. Now Isiah can come back to Jim's warm wet bed once again and I bet Isiah's stain is still on Jim Dolan's pillow.
2. Donnie did all that work and Jim destroyed it with the Melo trade. Donnie lost interest in even continuing and Jim was nice enough to keep paying him but refuse any of Donnie's wise input
3. Isiah always had huge influence on Jim's decision, whether Isiah officially works for Knicks or not.
4. Donnie's rebuilding Knicks was a great strategy, brilliant even.
5. Jim Dolan is the dumbest, most arrogant, ignorant and impotent NBA owner of all time.
6. Phil Jackson will NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER work for the Knicks, because he's just not that desperate knowing Jim Dolan will pull an Isiah's manhood on Phil, like how he did with Donnie.

What did Walsh really do during his tenure. The guy is overrated beyond belief. He signed Amare to that uninsured deal. Drafted Jordan Hill. Traded future picks and Hill to dump Jefferies.

the best part about all of this is that it sorta confirms that islesfan was supportive of moves that Isiah was making from behind the scenes. lol.

"This is the most surprising thing that has happened to me in basketball," Thomas said. "I never been fired before for basketball reasons. This is the first time.

"When I was in Toronto, I was trying to buy a team and I left. When I was in Indiana, Larry Bird told me that he liked what I was doing but he was closer to Rick Carlisle. The whole thing in New York was crazy. This is the first time someone told me that I was being fired for basketball reasons."

LOL

Allan Houston and Grunwald will be running the team. I dont see the big deal if Isiah is used as a talent evaluator on the team. It's not that serious.

i loved what walsh did for the team... but in hindsight, grunwald did a LOT in less than one season: tyson, lin, novak, jr smith, baron, etc.

i'm fine with grunwald and woodson leading the team. having isiah potentially back in the fold feels icky... but almost appropriate. sigh. this team.

If you really believe that Isiah will only be a talent evaluator...or a PR person then you are not facing reality. This is serious.

But worse than the possibility of having Isiah back is the fact that our owner is actively courting Isiah to come back.
