Shump came in off the bench when opponents were at least a bit tired already. Even to finish games. If he is playing against starters, don't expect him to get at least one steal off of every starting PG. I don't have the stats to back it up but I am pretty sure that Shumpert has done that more times than not this season so far.

The problem is that teams defend as TEAMS. You can't expect that it's gonna be easy to guard someone as quick and talented as Parker when he's getting picks and flying at you and has all kinds of room on the perimeter. Knicks failed as a team to defend the Spurs.

The Spurs are running MDA's offense basically. Spread the floor and attack via PnR and so we should be good at defending it since we see it every practice!!! What was STAT's excuse for why he didn't help Lin or Shump???

What is clear is that this team really does need more work and it's gonna take more time to get it together. We will eventually get Jared and Tyson back and I fully expect that we'll see more of them along with Jorts, cuz we need bigs that defend and help our perimeter players. STAT is a matador on D and we can't win with only him anchoring the defense.

First Unit

SF - JR Smith
PF - Carmelo Anthony
C - Amare Stoudamire
PG - Baron Davis
SG - Iman Shumpert

Davis and Smith provide shooters. Shumpert provides lockdown D on other teams best offensive wing. STAT moves to center, away from Chandler, Anthony is in a better position to work the low post and draw contact.

Second Unit

SF - Steve Novak
PF - Jared Jeffries
C - Tyson Chandler
PG - Jeremy Lin
SG - Landry Fields

Lin and Chandler are ego-less, if they don't start, it won't end their worlds for it. If you can't trade Melo or STAT and you can't bench them, then the answer would be to MOVE Lin out of the starting lineup and in charge of the 2nd unit, where his penetration and scoring are a premium. Linked with Novak, his safety valve shooter, and Jeffries and Chandler work well together, opening up the middle for Tyson and allowing some coverage for Lin's not so hot defense at times. Fields provides length, and does well running the pick and roll, to Chandler hopefully and seems to operate best away from Melo.

With a full five man rotation, A unit can simply try to shoot it out with other teams, pushing their strengths while B unit can operate a more traditional balanced lineup. You aren't going to magically get Melo and STAT to suddenly start playing lockdown defense, so I say don't ask them to, put them at center and power forward where they have no choice but to be more physical.

Gunner Unit ( need a three point shot)
SF - JR Smith
PF - Carmelo Anthony
C - Steve Novak
PG - Mike Bibby
SG - Jeremy Lin

Enforcer Unit (size and defense, for stops and defending a big lead, to lay down forearm shivers and take technicals)
SF - Jared Jeffries
PF - Jorts Harrellson
C - Tyson Chandler
PG - Iman Shumpert
SG - JR Smith

Garbage Time Unit ( blowouts, either way)
SF/SG - Iman Shumpert
PF - Steve Novak
C - Jorts Harrellson
PG - Mike Bibby
SG/SF - Landry Fields

Your post makes a lot of sense and is a very interesting take on the situation. The only problem is that the politics of management probably won't allow MDA to do that. I actually hope that i'm wrong, but I get the idea that he'd hear immediately from upstairs if he tried to do something like that.

What I actually think will happen is that MDA will do what your suggesting by given the SL a token 1st 3 minutes of the 1st qtr and then going with the early substitutions. It will still work and will avoid the political issues of strictly starting games without Lin and Tyson. It really doesn't matter who you start when you can make substitutions and still have the lineup you want. Dirk always comes out after 3 mins in the 1st qtr. It seems odd but that's their pattern.

We went 8-1 and two of those teams were the Lakers and Dallas. Utah was a good team. Toronto was playing very well then. I think the article is based on a pretty bad premise. We were playing great team ball, which stat measures that? Team assists maybe? I think our eyes and heart show that best.

Stats can get you in trouble. For example, look at Melos stats from last nights game. Looked like a great game, shot 50%. But, there was no team flow. I'll take his points but it is a toss up winning games without team flow. How do other players ever get a feel for the game. Yeah, he can be great as a closer, but what about the other 95% of the game?

Lin isn't the problem here. The construction of the team is very poor and the coach doesn't fit it either. We are in a tough position. But, I imagine this losing and inconsistent play will just continue through next year and then management might think of trading Melo or Stat (the latter might be possible with one less year on his contract) but I do think we can win with Stat here, just not both of them.
