Smith had a freak occurrence where lots of loose balls game to him and he was credited with 5 steals. For his career, he's averaged 0.9 stls/game and he's definitely never been known for his defense. I doubt Shump takes Fields' spot either.

fields has a chance to be a star like complimentary piece--he is going nowhere. He put to much unnecessary spin on one of his point blank layups last night:)

Fields is a better player than J.R. Smith on both ends of the floor. JR is a good three point shooter with knucklehead shot selection sometimes and he won't be on the team next season because he's playing for a bigger contract, so there really isn't any way he takes the starting job away from Fields. Shumpert is more physical and a better defender than Fields, so he'll play and shut somebody down defensively when it's necessary. You'll see Fields start more, but Shumpert will be a 4th quarter defensive stopper in all likelihood.

LOL at loose balls coming to him. He was hounding the passing lanes. Your anti-Denver mindset is sad.

JR is a better defender than Fields, clearly. He's faster and more active.

On offense, Fields has been doing a damn good job of penetrating and dishing, while JR, for the most part, has been bricking his outside shots. When those shots start falling, JR is easily the better player on offense. Even when the shot isn't falling, JR is our closing SG because he is an outside threat. He doesn't airball wide open threes.

I am not going to annoint JR a better defender than Fields after 2 games. Let's see what he does over a bigger sample size. I do think eventually he is the better complementary player to the staring 4. If you look at our starting 4 you see 4 people who like to operate primarily in the paint. Doesnt take rocket science to figure out which of the two styles of play (Fields vs. JR) fits best with those 4.

I am NOT making the case for him but I think it will happen. I didn't want to be in this position and didn't want us to sign JR.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

So far, JR has played aggressive defense and hit some important shots. He has NOT forced his shots. The knucklehead designation is hereby cancelled until further notice.

There is too much good feeling around this roster to continue the derogatory name-calling.

Besides, we need him to defend DWade.

Anti-Denver??? I've given Galli and Moz lots of praise and talked many times about how well they've played since the big trade.

Field's one turnover was perhaps the most pathetic of the night. He needs to prove to be more effective against good teams.

Is it just me, but Field's 3 pt shot seemed to have more of an arc last year. Between the two, Shump has a better arcing shot, which could improve with practice. The only guy I think who can line drive 3s consistently is Ray Allen. Fields has to work on his shot to give it more of an arc. otherwise, it's going to clang.

Fields never had arc - it was always an ugly shot but at least last year it went in sometimes.

I just don't want to see Fields out there with both Chandler and Jeffries ever again. That was painful to watch.

Fields with scorers isn't bad as he will get some penetration. Outside of that the constant passing gets old.

Fields starting is the least of our worries. He only plays half the first quarter before JR comes in, anyway.

Best five start. I don't understand this idea of saving talent for the second unit. Get the best players playing the most minutes.

he was 1-6 from the field tonight. God knows how many shots he forced around the basket early in the third quarter to mitigate our momentum. Every team in the league knows he can't shoot. He has too long a leash in this offense. Out of him, Shumpert and JR, his defense is the worst.

Frankly, Fields brings nothing to the table. One of JR and Shumpert should be our starting SG.

I believe we've reached the point of no return in terms of Fields eventually heading to the 2nd unit.
