IMO, Shumpert replaces Lin in the starting line up by the second month of next season at the latest. Better defender, AND better scorer. Only thing Fields has over him is rebounding. I think Field's perfect role is backup SG/SF.

Maybe once Baron returns and you don't need to rely on Shump to hold the fort backing up Lin

I agree with Rvwink too once Melo returns it will be Shump out there in the 4th quarter to close out games. Once Shump starts hitting those jumpshots later this year or next year WATCH OUT

I agree with this.

You are not alone. I actually think the Shumpert for Field's switch happens sooner than you do. When Melo returns to the starting lineup, who will MDA play in the last 10 minutes of the game Shumpert or Fields? I believe Shumpert gets the nod, because of the suffocating defense he has played at the end of the last few 4th quarters. Its what works. Also is there any doubt as to who the Knicks would prefer to have guarding a Dwyane Wade, or a Derrick Rose?

It really depends on the match-up. If we aren't matched against a premiere backcourt scoring threat, I'd prefer the better spacing that Fields provides.

I think we should bring JR on board just in case we are able to make a run...Fields is going to have a lot of open looks the rest of the year..He simply hasn't developed that shot with confidence to the point where we can rely on it to make a run...

We really need a deadly shooter in the lineup. I love what Novak is doing and we really need that somewhere in our starting lineup.

I think bringing in Smith would be a big mistake. You have three strong scorers now, two in the front court and one in the back court. Plus these days Tyson Chandler scores very efficiently. What you need at shooting guard is most definitely not a chucker. We need someone like Landry who rebounds and gets assists and scores some, but is in control.

I am surprised that some people want to take some shots away from our new big three, for someone who seems to be undisciplined. I will be astonished if MDA actually wanted Smith on his team. Fact is that we have a great shooting guard in Shumpert. Why spend money there. Save the $2.5 million in case an injury later in the year creates a sudden need.

That SG in the corner hitting that open three could mean the difference between making it to the second round or not...Fields was scared last playoffs series..

In my head, our shooting guard later in this year is not Landry Fields, but rather Shump Shump. He seems to play better in the fourth quarter both on his offense and particularly in his defense. MDA believes all of his players need to be team players. I don't get the idea that Smith is an unselfish team player. Three strong scorers seems like enough for us and the other two guys aren't going to get too many shots.

I agree that Shumpert will probably end up as the SG of the future for the Knicks. Fields definitely has more of a spring in his step lately, is taking it to the rim faster off the catch, and as always moving well without the ball. Still running into problems when he tries to use his dribble to break down a defender.

Shumpert has all the tools to be a starting SG, great defense and very good skills on offense but he needs more polish in that department. When he gets that down we'll probably see him inserted as a starting SG.

You know the old Fields is back when he starts getting double digit rebs. While I do love Fields I would be kidding myself if I did not say we still need scoring off the bench. I also remember how fields was in the playoffs, so I want to see how he does there before we say we are set with this backcourt.

Fields thrives when the offense is flowing because he plays off the ball. With Villups down in the playoffs Fields had nothing to support his game and that lasted into this season for as long as we had no PG. people were happy to write him off and call him a one season bust and whatever. Fields never gave up and now he is being rewarded for doing what he does best.

The haters need to stuff it. Fields is back as a starter and will continue to thrive in this system.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Landry Fields did everything and did it well. He buried some mid-range jumpers, sank his only three-point attempt from the corner, and finished a number of Lin's feeds, including this gem off a back-screen from Chandler:

[Watches that video repeatedly for five minutes.]

What were we talking about? Oh yeah, Fields. He also ran some gorgeous pick-and-rolls with Chandler and snaggled ten rebounds. He was five assists away from a triple-double. Oh, and he guarded Tyreke Evans and kept him mostly on the perimeter. Beautiful game.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

I'm pretty confident a helathy Melo will excell with this team. He is the closer that every elite team has. Fields ability to consistantly hit the wing/corner jumper to keep the defense honest when they rotate towards Lin and Anthony will be key.

Fields was (-18)in tonights game. One of his worse games of the year. Missed freethrows, wasn't even close on a few wide open 3's and he didn't do much to hold Bellineli (sp) down. The SG position is an extremely skilled position. Its already a known that he's not scoring much from that spot and we will get beat pts wise from the opposing SG if Fields is getting extended minutes. If he's not going to put up any resistance on the defensive end and cant make a timely jumper or 2, he is really going to kill us from the 2 spot. Hopefully, MDA wont hesitate to give JR extended minutes once he arrives.

Is Landry allowed to have a bad game ever? He's had a pretty good month.

Fields has really stepped up recently but my concern is his lack of outside shooting on a team that desperately needs it, and the fact that he is better coming off the bench as a SF. Smith should eventually become the starting SG because his shooting compliments Lin and Melo. Not taking away anything from Fields though, because outside of his decline in his shooting, he has been great recently.
Fields's development may be the final piece to a championship puzzle...
