Well, technically they have to match only within a certain percentage. I think it's 25%. It is super annoying. I would like to get rid of all caps and have luxury tax be the only deterrent. A percentage of money going to luxury tax is really all that's required. I think it's unfair that a large market like NY is at a disadvantage, due to having a low salary cap because other teams aren't making enough money, combined with one of the highest tax rates in the country. Why would someone sign in NY with the taxes here, when they can make 10% more off the same salary in Florida or Texas? That's the sad part of the current CBA cap situation: The states with the highest taxes are actually at a disadvantage.
It's not unfair that large market teams should have a little bit of an advantage, when they are also bringing the sport the most money and the most fans.
yeah, i know it's not exact matching. in fact, they loosened it up from the original restrictions set by the CBA prior to last. which i believe required salaries to fall within 10% of each other. i just think it's all dumb. i bet if we looked closely we could uncover countless trades that would have been win-win for both teams had they not been hamstrung by that nonsense rule. i know the principle behind the rule, but i think it does more harm than good.
