If the Knicks are targeting 2012 they might be smart to offer a little more to convince someone like Foster to take a 1 year deal. If they could add Sean Williams or another free agent for the vet minimum the Knicks would have Jorts, Turiaf, Foster and Williams/free agent to play the middle. Role player bigs made big impacts this year in the playoffs. Aaron Gray is another guy to take a run at with a larger one year offer.

That's who I was thinking. I think he realizes that this is his last shot. It would be similar to the Shawne Williams signing last year. A Foster and William platoon would get us by.

Foster, Williams and Jorts could be a pretty effective center rotation.

Foster would be good because it would give Jorts a model he can follow for NBA success. That's assuming Jorts makes the team, which I hope is the case.

I'm not saying it's gonna happen or that it will guarantee a title, but I think it would have a better chance of working than the Heat big 3. The Heat succeed despite the fact that they don't really blend that well. It's not a good fit to have two ball dominant players trying to figure out how to play without the ball.

Paul, Williams, and Carmelo are as ball dominant as Lebron and Wade

Not if D'Antoni's offense is in full effect.

Mike offense worked just fine with Shaq in it. It's not necessary for the C to actually be able to run as fast as everyone else. So long as he gets down there on the secondary break or if they don't score he'll be able to get into the halfcourt set after they pull the ball back out. This team hasn't been able to run his offense full out since he's been here. Duhon was too slow, Chan and Gallo didn't grasp it soon enough, CB couldn't push the ball etc. There really hasn't been anything near as fast as he used to play, where the Suns would run even off makes. This team hasn't been built to do that. So I see no problem for integrating bigs that may not be able to run. It won't stop the rest of the guys from being able to run if they have the opportunity. All Jorts would have to do is get the rebound and get it to our quicks.

And you'd rather have Dalembert extended to multiple years than a chance at CP3, Dwight or Deron?

Im not the biggest fan of waiting for stars, but when you can and don't lose much, you do it. NY will still try to bring talent and some will be available on 1-year deals and it will be good as anyway we will have a new team next season. Melo and Amare starting a season instead of just catching up with the season underway, Billups healthy and the young guys will make a difference.

Next will be exciting and if Dallas proved many wrong and won it all, you know its not just another lost season until we get the star. Any team with two stars, good role players and a sound plan will have a chance. I say we may be a defensive assistant and a couple of 1-year signings away from having a really solid season where who knows what happens.

The plan to get free agents last offseason cost the Knicks a lot and didn't work out the way it was supposed to. Having the cap space doesn't guarantee that you get the player. I also worry that the Knicks will package Shumpert with Balk and the 2016 first round pick to get cap space at the trade deadline.

I'll grant that last point, but the situation is a little bit different this time around. Last time, the sell was basically to try to get LeBron James AND somebody to complement him, but even I'll admit that New York was lucky to come up with Amar'e, but when you consider that Chicago got Boozer, GS got David Lee for the same price, and that Miami spent 100 million on Bosh, it's hard to argue with the signing.

Still, the Knicks have the best situation right now to sell to Deron, Howard, or CP3 assuming the money comes through. Come play with Amar'e and Carmelo for five years at max money is a lot better than what New Jersey or Orlando's offering.

If the new cap benefits us why not take a shot at a Gasol,Jordan, Nene, Dalembert now. Why do we have to wait until 2012 to start becoming contenders? I just don't see why we can't start now. And I'm no where near convinced that Paul is going to lead us to the ECF.

The options available now aren't worth it...None of the guys available is a lock to lead us anywhere...We have had enough marginal stars we paid good money to that led us nowhere...

And Paul is a guarantee to lead us? A couple years ago if you asked me if Tyson Chandler would ever win an NBA championship I would have confidently told you no. I think this whole board would agree that Ewing was a star but he never led us to a title. Nobody is a lock to lead any team to a championship, not even LeBron. So why should we continually "wait until next year" to be a contender?

Building a championship team requires patience. Activity for activities sake is a surefire way to mediocrity. I thought we learned that already.

No, trading for Melo cost a lot. Signing a free agent only costs cap space.

Stat, Howard, and CP3 would have been 10x better. Melo and Stat do the same things offensively, and neither defend.

maybe work ethic? i wouldnt try gray. career reminds of the later chris mihm. i would try kwame brown but it would be hard to see him doing fine here if anthony randolph suffered under d'antoni.

Next year at the draft I am sure you will recall the Jeffries trade and that it cost a lot more than cap space.

Anthony Randolph and Kwame Brown are two different animals. The first really had no position because even at 6'11 he didn't have the strenght to be a true C and he didn't even play like a big man. Brown, for what is worth, has the size and strenght of a C and showed last season that he can rebound, block, defend and even chip in points down low.

At the minimum and for 1-year, I say give it a go to Brown and a rotation of Turiaf, Jordan and Harrellson.

Its not long term deals that are cap killers- its bad signings that are cap killers.

I think its short sighted to not at least consider signing guys - especially if they can fill a need.

I mean, if we could sign a Marc Gasol - unless the dollars are aweful, I think you do it, especially if he wanted to play here (not saying he does).

Center by committee works for me, and I could live with this group. You figure that 2 of them will emerge as the players most complimentary to Amare and Anthony, 1 of them will get injured, and 1 will turn out to be useless except for the fouls they can give.

Honestly, I'd rather just go with Turiaf, Jorts and Jerome Jordan and Jared Jeffries than bring in Kwame Brown.

Kwame Brown is a waste of space.

And not convinced he'll want to leave Michael Jordan's team to come here. Jordan is the guy who drafted him and has shown a lot of belief in him throughout his career.

Robin Lopez has a guaranteed rookie deal thru 11-12, but he has a qualifying offer for the 2012-13 season - meaning we could cut ties before the 2012 free agent bonanza. (Though if the cap goes as high as $70M, I think we'd be able to hold onto him.)

He'd be the guy I would target.

Nice one. Was going to say the same thing. Deficiencies included, Kwame Brown has the ability to be a mid-level starting center in the NBA, potentially a double-double threat minutes permitting, though I think he's settling into a part-time starter/rotation guy - maybe that's just his mental wiring.

I'd have more confidence with him in there guarding elite center(s) -- is there anyone other than Dwight Howard that needs to be stopped -- and being an alternate against elite PFs than anyone else on the roster. He'd tighten up our defense considerably against opponents with strong offensive rebounders and post up guys.

We could probably thrive with a 3-headed center, with Amare geting 10-15mpg at center.
