Iman Shumpert's agent is Happy Walters. aka Amar'e Stoudemire's agent. and the reason Shawne Williams made the team.

guess we know one reason the knicks like him.

Hey the kid has the kind of range any team could use. He can run point, SG and defend 1-3. He's got world class athletic ability and lockdown D. What's not to like? My gut tells me that we probably won't get him, but who knows. Hahn was bashing this draft, but to me I love the role players this draft has. You need a shooter there are guys. You need an athletic PG. Defensive specialists. You have to look at this draft in that light. This isn't a franchise player draft.

Shumpert reminds me of Mardy Collins. People made the exact same arguments for Mardy.

no no no

Shumpert might be the best athlete in the draft. The WHOLE draft. Did you see his combine scores? He's got a 6'10 wingspan and one of the highest verticle leaps ever. I would be thrilled with this pick. Think a Igodalla, not Mardy Collins

Never thought of it but Igoudala is a great comparison. Seems like he would be a strong SG who can run the point from the wing like Iggy does, and defend any position. Also his athletic ability is unmatched. I would have no problem picking him up. If he shot the ball better in the college he would be a top-10 pick. That is my major concern, but i keep hearing he is a better shooter than his stats suggest.

maybe regarding athleticism, but definitely not with basketball IQ. Dude jacked up 5 threes a game despite shooting under 30 percent. I'm sure he'll look great in Pringles' rotation... if the Knicks draft him I'm willing to bet he rides pine by March and April

Damn man, you are so negative!

You know "Shump" will be traded by then as part of the Steve Nash deal!

why do you say that? His BB IQ is quite good, its his offensive repertoire that is weak, but he's 20. He's also regarded as a very smart kid and hard worker. You can teach offensive moves. You cant teach a 6'10 wingspan and 42 inch vert

I won't be against drafting him, but I won't be excited.

When I was in Libya I lived with a huge GT fan. We watched a lot of GT basketball (what else was there to do). The team was full of underachievers and I'm not high on him or any of the guys he played with.

I have no idea what the numbers are, but I remember him being inefficient. I remember the team turning the ball over. Things were off with him in charge. Now, as for the defense, I definitely could see him excelling in that role... but the other things have to sort themselves out first, especially with MDA.

This is more of a project pick, and I would prefer immediate help

dont we need immediate help defending the wing? Fields has cement shoes and Douglas is solid but a mighty mouse.

Paladin55 wrote:Are we taking the guy as a PG or SG. I am far from an expert on Shumpert's game, but from what I saw in terms of clips, he seems like more of a 2 than a 1.

This is from DX, and it makes me put a red flag on him:

Though Shumpert has certainly played quite a bit of point guard throughout his career at Georgia Tech, he's spent more time off the ball recently. In his first two years in Atlanta, he struggled with his shot selection, liked to dominate the ball, and proved fairly turnover prone looking to set the table for others. Now forced to score out of necessity as a junior, Shumpert's passing numbers have declined, but he's turning the ball over far less, getting to the line quite a bit more, and has gotten more and more efficient as the season has gone on, even if his sub 40% shooting remains disconcerting.

As is always the case, we really have to depend on our draft team to look at the guy and reach conclusion. He also worked out with Jenkins, a nice player who you would think was a good match-up in terms of seeing what he can and can't do.

His athletic specs are pretty amazing though, and I have to think that if teams think his BB IQ and skill levels are good, he should be a top ten pick given the package.

why is that a red flag? He was asked to score more than he should have... he doesnt have those skills (yet). Look at what a good scorer Chandler became in a few years. Dude was solid from everywhere. We would draft this guy because he can be the elite wing defender you need. That aint gonna be Melo

yes, we do, but can you honestly see sticking with a guard that shot 27.8 percent from three (42 of 151, 5 attempts per game)? I can't.

Maybe if he went about his offense like Jared Jeffries he'd stay in the game. But he loves to shoot and he's not any good at it

any player we draft will have a learning curve. This is where we get our prospects. We arent in a position to get a guy with Shumpert's hops who already has a refined game. We are picking 17. Same reason any bigman we get will there will have his own set of drawbacks. Just goes with where we are picking. MDA has played poor offensive players if they help in other areas.

There would be a huge difference with Iman being a 3rd, 4th or 5th option on offense and what he was asked to be in his last year of college (#1 option).

He still chucked when Derrick Favors and Ganai Lawal were featured. Glen Rice Jr. knocked those shots down and Shumpert really didn't. Didn't stop Shump from hoisting them up though

People are missing the point with a kid like Shumpert. What you want in a system like Mike has or the Mavs or Spurs are BASKETBALL PLAYERS. Not position guys. You want guys that have a very wide range of abilities, athletic, skill and BB IQ. Shumpert is a Shawn Marion type. A guy that has elite athletic ability. Can cover multiple positions. May not be a pure position guy, but can just play. Fields is also that kind of guy as is Shawne Williams. You want guys that can SLIDE. Chandler is another example of that kind of player. He can hold down SG, SF and PF. When you have a team full of guys like that it makes your team much more flexible and hard to deal with.

You want better defense, then you have to have wings like this kid. Some gave thought to trying to bring in Igoudala and it would be for the same reasons. He can give you a lot of different things that fill in the holes. We've got stars. Now we need role players that can really do a lot of the little things.

Missing the point? We couldn't find room for Corey Brewer on our roster... now all of a sudden the program is going to find room for Shumpert?

Agree completely. Corey Brewer is an all world defender - an NCAA champion and phenomenal athlete. The knock is he can't shoot - but he shot better 3pt% in the NBA than Shumpert did in college.

The difference is that supposedly Shumpert can run the point. And he seems to crash the rim. I've looked at tape of him and I do like him and I think he'd fit alongside either Toney Douglas OR Chauncey Billups, which is a big deal and helps a lot with the rotation problems we have at the guard slots. I wouldn't hate taking him at all.

BUT, taking him makes me bitter we didn't give Corey Brewer even a CHANCE to play here. Also, if we had at least held onto him for this long, he'd be an asset to try to trade at the draft and move up, wouldn't he? I think waiving him was one of the worst decisions this club ever made. And it reeks of D'Antoni.

sometimes you have to project.

Brewer was at $5M next year. He's a guy who has proven that he can't shoot after 5 years in league. And then he is a SF/SG. Fields, Williams, Melo, TD. Those are the guys who play the same position right now.

Shumpert is 20 and may have some PG skills... and he hasn't proven to anyone that he CAN'T shoot.

Guys like DeShawn Stevenson, Raja Bell are more in line what you would want to target: guys who make less and can actually defend and shoot some.

Brewer signed a 3yr $7M total deal with dallas. that's about $2.3M per year. it seems like he knew he wasn't a $5M player and would have been willing to negotiate.

Brewer signed a 3yr $7M total deal with dallas. that's about $2.3M per year. it seems like he knew he wasn't a $5M player and would have been willing to negotiate.

negotiate what? his qualifying offer was $5M. no way around that for NY.

couldn't they have offered him a contract other than his qualifying offer?

they would have had to turn it down and then he would have been UFA.

*Update from the inside on Iman Shumpert*
Knicks did ask him to shut it down but then he got an offer from Phoenix that they might take him higher so he didnt want to lock himself in.

PHX is on a "we need to improve defense" kick too. So maybe that's why they want a guard that can be a lockdown defender.

no way i see him going 13 to PHO, but what do I know. Perhaps Knicks do like him a lot.

And this is great news. Shumpert has the ability to be a beast in the backcourt.

Chad Ford: Knicks tried to get Shumpert to stop working out and other stuff/Felton to Sac for the 7th pick
