Why do we need a miracle offseason. Are we supposed to win the NBA championship by next season?
Well considering we have no draft pick next Summer, we can barely make any moves, Amar'e's health and we just traded everyone for Melo, then I think we need to be talking about win now very much so. We need an outstanding off season.
I don't believe its realistic to make a run for a championship this offseason. Resigning Billups for his remaining 14 mil solidified that thought process by Walsh. I believe next offseason is the best opportunity when we have Billups 14.2mil and Turiaf's 4.3mil coming off the books. This off season should be used as another step toward setting up a deep team for 2013.
Our goal this off season should be to buy another first rd pick or possibly 2 first rd picks if possible. Then use the cap space that we acquire with those 2 expiring contracts next offseason to add even more depth or another star (which ever option is more beneficial to us) and truly make us a championship contender.
Billups was re-signed because he would have counted against the cap for the buyout, so the savings wouldn't have been that great for New York's cap space anyway.
I think this all plays out based on how the new CBA goes. If the salary cap is rolled back significantly like it's supposed to be, New York won't be in the running for another star in the 2012 offseason and is going to have to roll with what they have to try to win a chip.
I think the core of Billups, Anthony and Amar'e is closer than a lot of people think, especially factoring in that Boston appears to be on their way down. They do need a center, but if it were up to me I'd draft Darius Morrs and then move for a player like Dalembert to start at center, and bring in Jerome Jordan from overseas. Then next year, the Knicks could run this type of lineup. I'd re-sign Shawne Williams also.
PG: Billups/Morris
SG: Fields/Douglas/Walker
SF: Anthony/Williams/Walker
PF: Amar'e/Williams/Turiaf
C: Dalembert/Jordan/Turiaf
Then New York has Balkman and Andy Rautins under contract as players 13 and 14. It's a pretty good team with decent depth if TD doesn't have to run the point and only has to provide bench scoring and if Morris is any good, but I like what I've read about him.
