I don't get it. The Knicks are competing defensively and giving a strong effort. I thought we couldn't expect that from this group of players because they weren't "defensive oriented" type players.

Does this mean that they are capable of giving a strong effort on defense and can play good defense if the coaching staff demands it of them? So why only now?

The point is that they can play good defense and give a good effort on that end. It's not that they aren't defensive minded players so it's not worth bothering as some people here seem to think. And I disagree that the coaching staff has nothing to do with getting their team to play hard on defense. That's exactly what their job demands.
