I want you to stop & think. yes this deal is not happening--I know that its all fantasy(message boards right) but I tell you this is the direction I would go in IF I could. Why--I knew this deal scked the minute we did it and ANYONE who thinks this will work is just flat wrong--I think it may get worse!! If you are old enough to remember--we had BETTER players back in the later 70's Macadoo in his prime pearl frazier Spencer haywood and they could not even go .5. this team is similar yet not as talented. we DO NOT have two stars on our team MIAMI does. carmelo IS NOT a star player. hes a volume scorer who DOES not have an all around game--ACCCEPT it live it breath it HES NOT a super star hes a really good player with a funky name/
We DID not need him and now people who liked the deal are not looking a t reality but rather defending their position in light of overwhelming evidence this deal scked!
I didn't like the deal either. I wanted Melo as a FA this summer, so we could retain depth. But...
IF Walsh's plan has been based on the wedding toast – I’m not saying it IS, only if… – then we would have let go our young roster players anyway, in a cap clearing effort, a fact dictated by the salaries of a three amigos roster (a la Miami). Based on that model, we would then do a similar rebuild around that core of stars by adding vets as they come available and getting talented yoots in the draft.
I like our chances with CP3 running the point. He is the best play-maker in the NBA, Amare is the best PF, and Melo is one of the best wings (certainly at scoring). If Melo actually grows as a man and player, he might further enhance his game, but this plan isn’t dependent on it.
I doubt MDA will make it much further, especially if Walsh retires or moves back to Indiana. I could easily see Phil J. or Rudy T., or Doc or Skiles deciding it’s time to come coach in the Mecca. I always thought MDA was a “name” coach intended mainly to draw star players here (i.e., they all played for him in the Olympics recently).
Walsh was the right management piece for the rebuild. He had patience, knowledge, drafting chops, and HUGE cajones. He did a remarkably good job. My only complaints were the dumb McGrady trade to dump Fishlips’ contract that cost us Jordan Hill (we should have picked Jennings), and giving up Gallo. Those were his primary blunders. Getting Melo was the right move for us long-term, as JVG recently said in an interview.
Have patience, my friends, and try optimism/hope/positivity. The sky is NOT falling, not yet at least. The Knicks are on the way back. Stat is the perfect leader for NYC. Melo will be a sidekick at the Garden really soon. The role players (vets et al) will come around. We will get to the promised land.
Can I get a “Hallelujah!” from the choir?
