oh, if he is playing hurt to the point where he is hurting the team then he shouldnt play until he is healthy enough to have a positive contribute.

that may be true, but on the other hand there are only so many more games and chances Chauncey and company get to play together to try to iron things out before the playoffs, which is where everyone is pointing towards. So it's understandable that the Knicks (and perhaps Chancey himself who wants to prove his worth to nab that extra $14.3M salary next year) would want him to play even when he is significantly less than 100%.

I dont know man, a healthy chauncey has nothing to prove right?

logging playing time while playing "significantly less that 100%" just cant be a good thing.

maybe they will get used to playing with a hurt chauncey

I don't think you bring Chauncey off the bench. Maybe you limit his minutes but he is the teams starter and ultimately will be the guy that you want on the court as much as possible once he has recovered from his injury. The guy is a finals mvp, his nickname is Mister BigShot, and he is regarded as one of the best leaders in the NBA. I like Toney's recent run of consistency and it is encouraging but I don't think he is ready to put a guy like Chauncey on the bench for any reason. In my mind that move symbolizes a lot more than a guy is getting over an injury.

And Toney showing why he can come off the bench and be effective.

The two guys are playing side by side really well tonight, too.

But Chauncey is not healthy.

His knee is not healed and his mind is with his wife and kids in Denver.

Earl, what would you do with Chauncey in the offseason? Buy him out or keep him for his vet presence? Not much out there in the free market.

A. I would buy him out and start over. Veteran presence is meaningless if that veterans heart is not into it. Chauncey's heart is in Denver, not New York. Chauncey misses his family and from his "good soldier" facial expression at the first press conference, to his underperformance tonight, is is apparent that NYC is NOT where he wants to be. It's understandable and perfectly human.

If Donnie Walsh has not cleaned out his office by June, he needs to have a heart to heart with Mr Billups and get a committment. If the committment is not 100 per cent there, the Knicks have no other choice than to go in another direction. He is 34 years old in a young mans game.

We hardly knew ye Chauncey.

I think of Billups as a Messier, Jeter guy. Do you ask Jeter to be a pinch hitter becaue he could help the team in that role? Billups has the ball in his hands on offense, is a great on the court leader, a clutch shooter, and a great defender. He is also a winner. I think if the Knicks are to have success as currently constructed Billups needs to be the point.

I'd love to know the behind the scenes machinations of this trade. Who really wanted Billups included. Because as much as Melo's destination required a commitment to re-sign there from Melo, what's the point of "demanding" Billups be included if he's little more than unwitting cargo now.

Billups is a pro and I expect him to be fully engaged in the playoffs, but he was "home" in Denver, and I don't want him half-assing his way through here simply because we're vastly overpaying him.

CrushAlot - poor analogy. Neither Jeter or Messier was ripped from a city they desperately wanted to be in at mid-season. This has less to do with Billups proven skill set than his DESIRE to play in New York City.

Is he a "heart and soul" type of player?

For reason stated above, I say no, he is not. His mind is in Denver, Colorado with his friends, family and loved ones.

THIS JUST IN

The Updated NYK "Heart and Soul" Rankings

7. Anthony - Fancy supersized billboards and berating your team mates doing the best they can does not make your a "heart and soul" kinda guy, diving after loose balls does

6. Shawne Williams - out of nowhere, he almost feels like one of the family

5. Ronny Turiaf - does his best leading from the bench but hey, you need good bench guys

4. Anthony Carter - not the most talented but will leave every ounce of sweat on the floor

3. Landry Fields - half rookie, half hard-working veteran

2. Amare - stubborn sometimes to a fault but you cannot question his competitive drive

1. Toney Douglas - the longest tenured Knicks player (crazy huh?) sets the tone for toughness with his tenacious demeanor

I don't think he's healthy. And, yes, he's proving me wrong and the Knicks are losing. You must be ecstatic.

Heath is not simply physical. In Chauncey's case you can remove money, rings and every superficial factor from the equation. The most important thing to a veteran player at this stage of his career is heart. How does Billups FEEL about being ripped away from his family and children?

What too many trader joe's overlook is the human element. Billups head is not here and it is evident. To the extent his body is aching, only he knows. We know one thing for certain. His heart is not in it.

"I'm jus sayin'" is exactly what it means.

That is hilarious. Well played.

Mid Term Fix Number 2: Play Carmelo at guard.

Put the ball in his hands in the role of point forward Anthon Mason. Force Carmelo to lead and create opportunity for his new running buddies. He brings the ball upcourt at least 50 per cent of the time, with either Fields or Billups on the wing. What do we have to lose?

Play Shawne Williams at three, a position he can flourish in at 6'9. (It's amazing Dolan did not throw in Shawne Williams and Landry Fields)

Amare at the four. Turiaf at center, until he fouls out or gets injured, whichever comes first.

And I love Ronny Turiaf.
