I don't think we need a point guard to take us to the next level next season. We will still have Billups and Douglas. What we need is a big man to take over the center spot who can rebound and defend and block those pesky little point guards driving in on us every few minuets like what Cleveland did. We need a big 7 footer.

The answer is there really aren't any guys out there who can get that guarantee us a trip to the conference finals. Our cap situation will hinder us from getting that type of guy next season. Mehmet would be the ideal fit for us if he's healthy and we might be able to get him for below market value. But he is a huge question mark. We could go for a guy like Sean Williams, but that doesn't really guarantee us anything. This Lithuanian cat Jonas Valanciunas has been getting decent marks for this year's draft, and I think he would make us forget about Timo. But it looks like he's still years away.
We're probably going to have to take a piecemeal approach to our center position next year.

Let's figure that D'Antoni's coaching style and Amare's makeup really dictate him getting some minutes at the 5 spot, taking away from any center's ability to get true starter minutes on the Knicks.

I'd be wary of relying on big minutes for a young player/rookie/former headcase if we're looking for a final piece.

We'll get a much better gauge after the playoffs for what we need to truly compete at the NBA elite level.

Dalembart is a good choice to and probably cheaper. I guess the theory here is I think we can do a lot more for our team that paying Billuops

Knicks would be very young at the pivot which is fine since Mozgov was coming along before he became a throw in.

Whats the fascination with Mozgov...I really don't get it...He is too expensive for a project...

Serge Ibaka on OKC...Now that Perkins is there he should be available and at 1.2 mil per, will be great for us...Young athletic, can rebound and block shots...A lot better option than Mozgov...

They plan on keeping Serge and moving him to his more natural position at power forward.

1A) Anderson Varejao - almost forgot about him - he's perfect would love to grab him.

1B) Deandre Jordan - sure the Clippers say they want him, but when have they ever paid their guys to stay? Turiaf's deal + pick 19 at the draft?

b) Chris Kaman - if LAC is keeping Jordan, they might move Kaman for cheap. Kaman for sure isn't a trendy pick at center, but he is servicable, rebounds and defends and is a veteran that fits in with the rest of the roster. We'd have to swing a trade, but he could be really good here.

c) Andris Biedrins - GSW seems disenchanted with this guy, but he can run the floor, rebound and block shots. i've not seen him play much recently, but i remember him being very good a few years back.

d) Memhet Okur - not sure how/if it would be possible, but if Utah is rebuilding, maybe we can chase Memhet. a good defender and rebounder and has the outside touch which MDA loves.

e) Marc Gasol - possible we could work a sign and trade with cash-strapped Memphis. i'm betting memphis keeps him though.

f) Kenneth Faried - if this guy is available at pick 18-20, i think he could be great, tenacious rebounder, a little small.

g) Mozgov - if Denver is willing to deal with him, it might be worth investigating.

h) Jerome Jordan - this kid could be better than Mozgov - a lot of us coveted him at the draft - look forward to seeing him in Summer League.

i)Sean Williams - I've always liked this kid, might be worth giving him a shot. I would sign him to a 10-day contract right now.

j) Sign Chris Hunter to a 10-day contract right now. I believe he's available, and he's pretty decent.

Excellent list. I think Donnie will get one of the top guys and then fill in behind him with one of the lower guys on your list. I love what Deandre Jordan can be. I'd actually see just how committed the Clips are to resigning him. Verajao is also a good target. Gasol has the offensive game, but I think the other guys are stronger on the boards and defense. In any event i'd spend to fill that spot cuz I think it's the main thing keeping us from contending. Imagine how good we'd be right now with one of these guys?

I'm not really in favor of Stat doing more than 10-15 minutes in situations at the 5. Too much rides on the man to subject him to a steady beating. He is what we need to protect. Center has to be smart enough to not clog the middle on offense, be able to run, rebound, and protect the rim. whether taking a charge or blocking a shot.

One of Jordan/Mozgov/Kaman/Gasol/Okur would be my choices

Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

Dalembert > Billups + any chance of a 2012 free agent...

Really?

Samuel Dalembert: The only center in the NBA that will make Knicks fans pine for the offensive prowess of Jared Jeffries.

Didn't know that...PF is a highly skilled position in today's NBA...Don't really see him there but they also have no depth at PF..

I'm not so sure about that. We will see his real value assuming we get to the playoffs. Way to early to even talk about cost management on that money. Heck he migh be Mike's replacement

I think with Durant, Westbrook and Harden, who has been gaining confidence, they see their 4 as more of garbage man on offense and stopper on defense. That will be one scary team if when Perkins gets right.

if we dont pick up Billup's contract...
Tyson Chandler
Deandre Jordan
Mat Gasol, not sure, loved him last year but he seems to have took a step back this year

not for max though, for about 5-7m or maybe MLE if exist
Yao Ming
Dalembert
Prizbilla
Kris Humphries

I am not sure I would give up this pick for Mosgov. I just didn't want to be robbed for Melo.
I honestly don't think he is the intimidator we were looking for but hes a great 2nd big and would be better than any big we have now. I just don't think it was necessary for Denver to HAVE to include him and our 2nd round picks. He is sitting in their bench come on... we could really use him.

with 2012 there are quite a few possible big men

Dwight Howard
Duncan
Deandre Jordan
Matt Gasol
Kaman

but I think we have to lose Fields if we go this route.
How do these 2nd round picks work? Can we extend him a qualifying offer or something?

I would be happy to add

Chandler
Deandre Jordan

make a good draft pick, maybe Ben Hansbrough, Brigg's pick. or even a big.
we can then resign Fields right? we still own his bird rights? I don't understand why he only has a 2 year contract?

I think these big guys will make TD game shine, he has a big to back him up especially when he cheats.
These guys can intimidate. If we went with a BIG for the draft pick, i dont mind signing a min veteran deal.

And if we cut Billups,& sign the ^^ bigs i hope we can save enough cap room to add a player like

Barnes
Shannon Brown (can he play the 1 n 3? is his game similar to J.R.Smith but better D?)
Shawne Williams

Why?

These lists are cute but while listing these names, can the author please identify the rationale for that player leaving his current team.?

What factor makes the NYKnicks more attractive than the players current team?

Dwight Howard - doesn't like cold weather.

Duncan - a Spur for life

Deandre Jordan - the Clippers let Jordan walk, and break up their best frontcourt ever, with Blake Griffin, because...?

Matt Gasol - is Memphis really that cheap?

Kaman - glad he finally got a haircut. Not bad.

Chandler - seems to have found a home in Dallas and Cuban has more money than God.

This ain't Baseball Cards

There is no 7' center that will help take the Knicks to the championship round next season.

That 7' center is not on the market. That 7' center is in middle school. That center is NOT in the DLeague.

That 7' center is a myth. A fantasy league wet dream. A conversation piece only.

That 7' center is at least two years away. That center is our imaginary friend. Signing that 7' center is much, much harder than it sounds.

That 7' center is a freshman in college. That center played for us in 1999 and rode the bench with Spree.

Unlike Carmelo, who stated his desire to play in New York, there is no 7' center using his leverage to come to The Garden. That 7' center is happy where he is.

No, the Knicks do not have the assets to acquire a 7' center. But it could happen.

Donnie and his scouts simply need to repeat their Landry Fields magic and have lightning strike twice in the same place in the second round of the draft.

Sign and trade billups and another ex knick for nene. He's the big body we are going to throw at Bynum and Dwight Howard.

misterearl--if we overpay for Jordan(I mean he is 22 years old leading the league in FG%) avg 7-7 70% which I think could increase here to 10-10-3 65% to have such a young kid who can play now--is it worth it to perhaps overspend to get him? We dont need a star--we need someone who can rebound block shots/clog the paint and hit hsi shots when they are there. Playing next to grifin probably hurts Jordans numbers a bit right?

But lets look at Jordan high numbers for the year

Scoring 3 best games 21, 17, 16 rebounding games 20 17 16
Blocked shots 7 , 6 ,6

Lets take his numbers 7-7 1.8 X 25 minutes and lets add in 13 more

38 projected at 10.5--10.5 and 2.7 if we take into consideration his age and we see that his out put went up nearly 20% this year on a per minute basis--lets give him 10% per year for the next 3 years with a smaller increase for blocks

that would leave his peak around 13 points 13 rebounds 3.5 blocks--now what is his value worth?

Free agency is about overpaying--we did it with amare and it worked

if we give this guy 5 years 55mmfrontloaded----yes I might be overpaying at the START of the contract--but I think the value is there for this team given his age and room for expansion--YET he can play and help us win today. Also he is not a guy who will get in the way of Amare or Carmelo. I don't think Memphis opr Denver will cheap up on their C's--thts why they dumped thabeet--to pay Gasol

BUT the Clippers ARE cheap

Bynum and Howard kill Nene. The worry with nene is those knees and he needs the ball. I think th Aamre Nene thing would cause problems. I think you want a C who i complimentary with Amare and can do his thing whiole staying out of his way.

Briggs, I agree - overpaying Deandre Jordan would be a smart long-term move. I think the Clippers will try to move Kaman before signing Deandre. It might be possible to sneak a huge offer over to Jordan before the Clippers can move Kaman and have them make a tough decision. Clippers are always cheap. That's one thing you can bank on.

If Deandre Jordan doesn't work - I wouldn't mind seeing if we could pry Kaman - Clippers won't pay both.

I'm also extremely curious to see what Jerome Jordan looks like in summer league - hope the Knicks bring him over.

Briggs, I still remember your near draft day, you wanted to draft this guy with Mcgee? or Blatch?
Anyway, I am messing up drafts but point is, it takes a couple years somethings for bigs to develop.
This one developed, and big men don't grow on trees, this one didn't reach his full potential yet either and is still improving.
My opinion, I don't know if that would be enough to keep LA from matching. I think they feel confident this time with

Kaman/Jordan
Blake
-----
Gordon
Mo Williams/Bledsoe

I also think they are intending to keep Mo Williams. If anything I think they will let Kaman loose, however, having 2 good big men is very helpful in this league, but LA is quite cheap and done some crazy stuff over the years.

I think we would have to overpay by more if we want to keep him. Most serviceable big men start at 10m per year, Jordan has shown he can be special, but he is still raw, its very interesting. At that rate, I don't think we would be overpaying by much, if we are, it would be the market rate for centers for his production at 55m.
I think it would have to start at 10-12m at least, with the 15% increase for the Clippers not to possibly not to match.
If Turiaf opts out, and we throw close to our max cap room with the 15% increase, they might not match.
I think they feel confident they found the ALL STAR they have been looking for in Blake. Sterling is ready to reach for his pockets this time and sick of people saying he is cheap.

I think Chandler would fit it better, was he also on team USA? Sure he is pretty much reached his ceiling already, but he understands his role better. Problem is he is also known to have injuries through his career.

I believe Chandler, Jordan, Perkins, Duncan, Dwight are they type of centers, that we actually need.
Some people don't want to cut Billups and let him finish mentoring our team, and saving cap room for 2012. I would be happy if we could get either one of these players.
Gasol last year, looked like he would be the exact type of big man that we needed, however, he took a huge step back this year.
We would have to cut Billups within 5 days from us being out of playoffs. They also feel we would be taking a huge risk because we have no clue would these centers join us or not.
My point is, the FA list in 2012 is very appealing, however, the big men look highly unlikely to want to join us, only the PG's I can see, mainly CP3.
I don't feel it is worth the risk to go to 2012, if we don't add a big man that year. Adding a PG would leave a hole for us at center, cause we can't fill out this year, cause we have to keep cap space. Most importantly we most likely would lose Fields going that route.
My opinion, the only players worth the wait would be

Howard *says he wants to play career in Orlando, but if he loses twice within the first 2 rounds, I can see him changing his made, unless he signs extention early, fearing summer CBA
Duncan *looks like he wants to be SA for life*
Jordan * we can try to get him this year, next year if things go smoothly, they would be contenders in the West, Sterling could then choose between Kaman and him*
Gasol * we can try to get him this year as well, however, he doesn't look as great as he did his rookie year*

Kaman isn't worth the wait to me

Deron
Cp3 these are both great PG's however, we would still need a C, leaving us with a hole we have to fill and still lose fields. Would be missing a Center and 6th man wing.
If a team decides to match our offer on a restricted FA, how long does it take b4 we can make another offer?

Mo Williams is another PG that would be able to stretch the floor, if we really don't feel confident in TD.
The last contract he signed wasn't too bad, but he probably took a pay cut to play with Lebron.
I don't know what he would cost now. I feel we can roll with TD and a min or near min deal player though.
The thing about TD is I don't think he can throw alley hoops well enough, however, he can shoot 3s and play defense.
I think he would do fine with a center to help him out.

a little starphuking

how would u guys feel about

Yao Ming 7m
Dalembert 5-7m
if enough room
Barnes 2m

Mo Williams 7-8m
Dalembert 5-7m

Kris Humphries 4-6m
Joel Prizbilla 4-5m
Shannon Brown rest of cap

Kris Humphries or Dalembert or Prizbilla at 4-7m
Pietrus 4-6m

if possible signing 3 of such players from ^^...

and signing min deals for back up PG
or the wing type player

Name 3 seven foot or plus centers we can get this summer that will help take us to the championship round next season. And Why?
