Knicks office must be pondering right now, if they should extend CB contract for next year or not. We all know, we must get a center. With the way Tony Douglous can play on his good nights, AC + Mason back at a vet mins, and with Rautins, hopefully developing. As good as CB is, we need to fill the our need for true big men. I am content with JJ as our back but bodies are always needed to be a championship contenders. We have to decide in the summer if we are trying to build contenders for next season or only give 1 year contracts out, so we can add the "3rd all star" in 2012. We have to be
very selective and cost efficient because we have 2 players that will take up most of our cap.
My opinion is we should go for it all during this summer.
2011
Next year, Amare,Melo, and TD would cost 38m
vs
2012
41m those( TD makes 2.1) Fields will also be getting a new contract as well.
So I don't think it is worth the risk for a possibility to add a 3rd star.
He would have to come at a discount.
We can only add 1 year deals to our roster, diminishing our chances to add more quality for depth next year.
These decisions will have to be made this summer.
Turiaf can opt out this summer for a longer contract.
He would make 4.4 next year if he decides not to opt out.
Should we cut Billups and reshape our roster with a mixture of vets and young guys?
or keep Billups and use the MLE if still exist for our need for a center?
If we use the MLE, a 3 year deal must be made, which means we can't add our 3rd "star" by signing in the summer of 2012, possibly only with a trade.
If we do cut CB...
Should we go with quality or quantity?
Tyson Chandler would cost us probably all of our cap room and probably even need Turiaf to opt out.
Deandre Jordan is a younger version that would play a similar role but Clips can match and i think they would, unless we are willing to throw all of our cap room for him.
I think we could use a 6th man type player, similar to the production of Lamor Odom.
Caron Butler is a player that would be interesting. But a center is a greater need.
I think Shawne Williams has earned himself a contract worth more than the minimum and with more years. He knows this system already, can play defense, and can hit the 3.
If we want to keep him, we would most likely have to reward him with a far greater deal than he has now.
It would cost us more than the min and a longer contract.
would we have improve our team by adding one player using all of our cap room( then signing min deals)
or
diversify the cap room for players like the players under here and bargain hunt...
some of these players have a chance to sign at the Bi Annual Veteran Exception and vet min?
Yao Ming
Dalembert
Joel Prizbilla
Kris Humphries
Dampier
Matt Barnes
Pietrus
Delfino
Kapono
Anthony Parker
Delonte West
Also, if the MLE would still exist, Steve Nash would be a very interesting player to add in 2012.
Maybe we can even use the Bi Annual Veteran exception on Nash and use the MLE on another player instead.
