He can draw up the greatest plays known to man, but if the players either can't or won't execute, then there's nothing he can do. I still believe that in the end he's proven to be a good coach and he'll direct this team well enough to win. It's up to the players at that point. Tonight guys stepped up and played great TEAM defense.

While I agree to some extent, it is all about priorities. While some coaches like D rivers and SVG in the huddle are screaming "we need stops - get in their faces!", MDA can be heard always saying "we need shots, we gotta run, we gotta push ..."

A defensive coach is always preaching D, D, D

I think Mike can be seen on the sidelines getting on his team all the time about D. It's all about perception. People just want to believe that he doesn't talk defense even tho there is evidence that he has been. At some point tho, it's not about how much you scream about D. It's the pride the players have about doing what it takes to win. Today they acted like they cared. I'm pretty sure that Mike didn't say much different this time in the huddle.

What I did notice was the return of the Zone defense. Haven't seen that in a long time. It was nice and effective. They need a change of pace defense to mix things up once in a while.

Yeah - I think the zone is back because of Jeffries. He is really making a defensive difference. He can guard any player anytime - nice pickup.

A good coach needs to get his vets to play D. It is easy to get Carter, Mason, Shawn W and TD to play D since they have alot to prove. Maybe if he gives the D guys more PT it will send the vets a message and they will follow suit. Lets hope.

Not only did he keep in a defensive lineup to close out the game, but that defensive unit also hit some big outside shots.

Good point. I have not seen the Knicks blow out a good Eastern team on the road like this in quite some time. And, the team that blew it opened were these guys! Mason, AC, Shawn Williams (how great of a move did DW make getting him) and Jefferies (with STAT).

I thought D'Antoni coached a great game today. Actually tried to do things on defense, made good substitutions using our deapth of mediocre to good players, and took some timley to's for a change. If he keeps this up, I might change my mind about him.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

The key for this win was actually Anthony Carter, and Melo passing the ball, and not grinding ISO plays that lead to poor shots. Even though Carmelo shot 33%, he had 7 assists so I can stomach his inefficient play better. If Carmelo can get 5+ assists a game I'd be very happy.
Rose is not the answer.

The trade definitely made us a more potent offensive team. The question is whether we can consistently play defense, and the answer to that question remains open. Getting Jeffries helps alot.

Melo shot his way out of the game and blue collar guys in there to defend kept him on the bench. Hopefully Diva is fresh today adn drops 40 on the Jazz. Yet to see him do anything very impressive yet

Forcing Walsh to gut the team of assets and getting paid $65mm? Isn't that impressive!

excited about the win and they actually played good D. only thing is if the 3s weren't going in last night, it would've been a lot closer in the end.

Nope. No free will. I truly think that if it was up to him, this trade would not have been made (as constructed)

Dolan.

I think Walsh wanted to make some type of move but Dolan forced him to overpay. Walsh woulda chosen to stand firm.

ok that's fine. it looked like you were piggybacking on franco's comment that melo forced donnie to give all that up.

No. I am looking at it sort or like Steinbrenner and Cashman/Gene M. When George wanted a player, he forced it on the GM and what are they going to say? No? Walsh is very methodical and not the type to cave into high demands.

Dolan got nervous that he was going to sign/trade with NJ. I think that was never gonna happen. There were reports out of Denver that Melo did not want Denver to get hurt in this trade and wanted the Knicks to pay dearly. I believe ESPN reported it as well.

Wow, I like how the thread I created mocking people who complain about the trade, has become a thread about hating the trade.

We gave up barely anything in the trade, we are paying Carmelo what 29 other teams would happily pay him, and we got the best of the trade, BY FAR.
