I think all these waiver moves are marginal one way or another. We are not going to get a rebounding, shotblocking big body player from the garbage bin of the NBA. Going to have to use the MLE and LLE to complete the front court in the summer. At least we have a decent backup PG in Carter now. I think getting a couple of decent bigs to split the C minutes is doable in the summer with MLE and LLE. We shoud be ok at backup PF between Turiaf, the 2 Williamses etc.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Knicks get a good, cheap, young forward who they brought in to workout before the 2009 draft and liked... get him for free... and people here are upset about. Most, likely, without ever having seen him play.

Unbelievable.

I have no idea why Paul Silas has kept Brown on the pine while rolling out mediocrities such as Dominic McGuire and Matt Carroll to take his minutes. I do know this: He has NBA athleticism, can shoot well enough to get by and, as a second-year pro, can still improve. That combination of attributes is the type you like to take a chance on, and although Brown's upside isn't huge (he's 24 and has had PERs in the 12s his first two seasons), I'm fairly sure he can be a rotation player if he gets half a chance."

Now that he's a Knick, Hollinger will probably start trashing him.

So true.

I can see it now...

Brown is a 25 year old tweener with low upside who gets by on athleticism. He may shoot a high percentage but he rarely looks for his shot. As a second year pro he has already reached his limited ceiling and while he may be able to rebound and score in limited minutes he has proven he can only do it in that. Limited minutes. A low low end rotation player at his best.

I don't get this Knicks fans obsession with Hollinger.

Last time he pissed fans off is when he predicted a couple months back that the Knicks point-differential suggested they'd play around .500 for the rest of the year.

Until the Anthony trade was made, he was looking pretty spot on.

You can't be a 'hater' and be right.

Hollinger Profile:

STATS
SEASON FG% FT% P/40 R/40 A/40 TS% AST TO USG REB PER
'09-'10 .463 .667 13.9 5.8 1.4 52.0 8.8 8.8 15.6 8.8 12.65
'10-'11 .549 .532 12.4 6.9 2.4 56.5 15.2 14.7 14.4 10.2 12.45
(Projected)
'10-'11 .455 .654 13.9 5.8 1.5 51.3 9.4 8.3 15.6 8.8 12.83

+ High-jumping, long, left-handed combo forward who can drive and draw fouls.

+ Needs to prove he can defend either threes or fours. Could use more strength.

+ Work in progress as an outside shooter, but has solid form and may improve.

Brown offers some promise and could emerge as a rotation player this season. His rookie numbers indicate several strong, positive markers -- sixth among small forwards in free throw attempts per field goal attempt, fourth in offensive rebound rate and passable ballhandling numbers.

Physically, it's obvious how he'd take a step up. He can really jump and had some wicked finishes at the basket, and his length helps him challenge shots. He'll be able to play a lot of four once he fills out, and while his shooting numbers last season weren't good, he doesn't look hopeless out there.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

No one should complain too much. He's a little under sized and you could say hasn't played enough to discern anything definitive about his talents in heavy rotation but he has tools to work with. As with anything else when it comes to youth and talent of an unknown will D'AnToni play him.

IMO this is why the Knicks made this deal. We have no backup SF other than Balkman, since MDA is trying to play S. Williams as a PF/C. Bill Walker is not a SF and Fields is playing primarily as our SG. This guy Brown can give you most of the defense and intensity that Balkman brings with the added bonus that he can hit a jumpshot (although his foul shooting is suspect). The Knicks signed him to compete with Balkman as our de facto backup SF/PF.

We will then sign Jeffries, who will likely become our starting center, and we are going to roll into the playoffs with a lineup of Billups, Fields, Melo, Amare, Jeffries, with TD, Williams, Walker, Turiaf, and either Balkman or Brown getting the rest of the minutes.

Trust the Process

I honestly don't get it --- not saying Derrick Brown is worthless, he's a good athlete and he's still got some promise, but what he is is a smallish PF (basically another wing) that doesn't address the rebounding issue. And to me they just competely overrate Jared Jeffries and what he brings to the table---they think of Jeffries as some monster defensive guru and he's not. Can he attempt to guard PGs and centers? Yeah, but he guards neither well enough to justify playing him big mins....I just don't get it...We either needed a legit C or a PF that plays big & rebounds where we're OK moving STAT over to the 5 (which I never had a problem with as long as we got a big enough dirty-work type PF). Jeffries stinks, end of story -- at least Brown's got some ability but these are two suspect moves here. I think we could've done much better.

Brown is a guy who will fit the style of play already installed here. It's a good pick up.

He's an NBA guy - expecting the Knicks to bring up an NBDL guy at this point of the season and try to work him in is just unrealistic.

Not if the player in question's a much better fit it isn't..No difference between a capable DL player ready to take the jump and a guy like Derrick Brown--equal playing field right there..Now if they would've gotten Troy Murphy, that's a different story..NBA established double-double guy--excellent rebounder and shooter that's 6'11". Brown hasn't done anything noteworthy in his career yet, he's smallish and he doesn't address the rebounding problem..Again, I'm not saying he's useless, there's upside here for sure, but what hole does this guy plug?? What are they looking for when they brought him in?? Derrick Brown is a hybrid F that's not even as good or versatile as Wilson Chandler..I mean heck, if they wanted a skilled 3/4 off the bench to take over Chandler's 6th man role, I would've preferred DeShawn Sims..I think Sims is more skilled that Brown. Not that familiar with Vernon Goodridge but I gotta wonder if he would've been a better fit that Derrick Brown as well..Goodridge, when you watch his clips, plays big--rebounds it, blocks some shots, etc..That's not really Brown's game..Come to think of it, Brown's game is pretty hard to define right now..What is he exactly??

I've talked about quite a few guys but the guy everyone would've been extremely satisfied with would've been Earl Barron..7', rebounder and he can bury mid-range jumpers..PERFECT FIT..PERFECTO!!! Why is this guy not in a Knick uniform right now??? I can't wait to hear the explanation on these two signings..Don't tell me about Jeffries' defense when we had a younger, much better defender, much better overall player in Corey Brewer that we just cut loose (heck I prefer Balkman over Jeffries when you get right down to it) and don't tell me that Brown fixes the rebounding problem or anything else..Does Brown even have a potent enough offensive game to act as primary scorer off the bench?? I don't see it..

Wasn't the backup SF Corey Brewer?

Just got this from MSG:
KNICKS CLAIM DERRICK BROWN OFF WAIVERS

NEW YORK, March 1, 2011 – New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that forward Derrick Brown has been claimed off waivers.

Brown, 6-8, 227-pounds, holds career averages of 3.4 points on .500 shooting, 1.7 rebounds and 10.4 minutes in 98 games (one start) over two seasons with Charlotte. The Dayton, OH native is averaging 3.7 points on .549 shooting and 2.0 rebounds over 11.9 minutes in 41 games (one start) during the 2010-11 season. He was originally selected by Charlotte in the second round (40th overall) of 2009 NBA Draft after a three-year playing career at Xavier University. He was waived by the Bobcats on Feb. 24.

So I guess it's official.

Key is you have to think about things going into the off-season. Much easier to retain a guy like Brown than someone like Murphy who will require long-term salary commitment of some sort at a larger rate than someone like Brown. Plus we don't need to get any older than we currently are. We need to get younger looking for players with youth upside. Reports are Murphy isn't really looking our way it's Miami and Boston...he's also very much overrated. We'll have 5 guys under contract in July who are 27yrs or older and only 3guys 25yrs old and under with exception to Walker being picked up. We'll probably be looking for players who'll sign 1-2yr deals at best until 2012 on the cheap therefore picking up guys like Brown fit the plan going forward.

The Answer Man Passes Some Strawberry Kool-ade And Rose Tinted Shades

Q. Finestrg - Why is (Earl Barron) guy not in a Knick uniform right now?

A. Because he is in a Milwaukee Bucks uniform right now.

Finestrg - Don't tell me about Jeffries' defense when we had a younger, much better defender, much better overall player in Corey Brewer that we just cut loose

AM. The NYTimes ran an excellent analysis of Corey Brewer's game being ill-suited to the Knicks based on where he shoots the ball. Not very well The Answer Man might add.

Q. Finestrg - Does Brown even have a potent enough offensive game to act as primary scorer off the bench?

A. Nope. That is not his role. Primary scorers off the bench are not generally put on waivers. Those guys are lottery picks.

Finestrg - Come to think of it, Brown's game is pretty hard to define right now.

AM. That's cool. Admit it, you've never seen him play.

Q. Finestrg - What is he exactly?

A. He is ours.

He's also a super fun clown loving teammate. The good kind. He was the one who always got the Bobcats riled up in the huddle before tip off but a consummate professional how he handles himself on and off the court.

Answer Man, this is a post I can get behind.

Give Derrick Brown a chance here, people. Geez.

I remember him beating up on the Knicks a little when they played Charlotte earlier this season.

Earl Barron didn't fit the style of play here and looked mediocre at best. "Having a big body" does not equal being able to defend big guys.

If size was all that mattered, Amar'e and Nash wouldn't have missed the playoffs (2009) and gotten swept in the first round (2008) with two seasons of Shaq - and that's not all on MDA, the season they missed the playoffs Terry Porter was the coach.
