I'm pleasantly surprised to see him working hard on d. That's a pretty big step - not only for him, but for the team.

CHAOS wrote:In the second half, Melo asked to guard Lebron and played excellent defense. To cap it off, he stripped him late in the 4th, then on the second to last play, he forced Lebron to Amare who blocked his shot !!! MDA had a 40min practice dedicated to defense and he played defensive players in Carter and Balkman.

This is what I said when we were talking about trading for him. It is not that he cannot play defense. I have seen him play good defense in the playoffs. It is just that he is not commit to playing defense all the time. If he ever realizes that giving max effort on defense is just as important as giving max effort on offense, he will be a great player for us.

I think Karl's comments might be giving him some extra motivation right now..If so, great for us..Thank you George! Melo was very good last night defensively, no question about it..

Melo is very large, he can really muscle up well to guys like Bron and Pierce. The rebounding is already there (9 last night,) if he sets his mind to the D he can be a monster. The true superstar.

The template is undeniable: Spurs, Lakers, Celtics, Heat are all excellent defensively. There ain't enough "help" in the world out there to get it done if our big guns won't.

Amare's been doing it. Melo did it last night. It's all about consistency now. Gotta take every game deadly seriously.

Melo may not be the best defender, nor is Amar'e... but they are extremely competitive and step up in big moments.

This team can match up with anyone in the playoffs. (except maybe Orlando... I have no clue how they'll look against that team, I think Dwight will give them lots of problems.)

You know what else I like -- the fact that Melo can actually bring the ball up court a few times every game..Look, is he the overall talent James is? Unfortunately, no but who else in the league is?..These other parts to his game are a little underrated & undervalued if you ask me -- rebounding, passing, bringing the ball up and initating the offense, etc..Dude's actually pretty damn versatile..

Good point. And while he's not Lebron, in terms of offensive style, shot selection and physicality, I think he's the closest. He's extremely strong and aggressive near the paint. Perhaps Pierce-like or better.

Boston is way, way deeper than us and have their defense humming, but

Billups = Rondo
Allen = Feilds (They don't match up in similarity but Fields is an interesting item.)
Melo = Pierce
Amear = Garnett

It's getting pretty close. Fill in the pieces, Donnie...

Nice to know this team can beat an elite club by holding them to under 89 points.

This can't be a one and done type of effort, we need to build on this defensive oriented win.

I never doubted that he could play good defense if he tried to. The issue is whether he'll have a sustained, long-term commitment to defense.

Dang bra... can't believe you equate the greatest shooter of all-time to Mr. Landry Fields...
and let's all be real for a bit, D'Antoni has never emphasized Defense over gunning and running offense attacks.
Defense wins championships. Period.

They only equate by position, not making qualitative judgments.

However, the other 3 do match-up pretty well. And you don't have to match-up equally at every position, sometimes just having the best player on the floor for a night or the series can do it, and against the Celtics that could be any of Billups, Melo and Amare.

The degree to which Donnie can fill in help at the PF/C spot will go a long way towards our chances in the playoffs. We have the frontline talent to match any team in the league, so it's the teams depth that needs to be upgraded. I feel very good about this team already and we all know that it can get better.

Melo and Amar'e want this real bad and with Chauncey here to help them understand what it takes to win, I think they can sustain the defensive effort. Mike and the coaches did a good job working with team on the way we play D and only a few times did I see the team bumping into each other trying to rotate or switch after the 1st qtr.
